SPYDERCO MANIX2 S110V - rope test & Epic Fail !

From my usage, S110V will hold a working edge for a really long time but it will lose it's hair-popping/shaving edge very quickly.

I believe this is part of it too. Diamonds leaving a toothy edge behind, where only parts of those edges are getting polished up. I'd like to see if slava could reproduce these results on what Jim uses... :)

Yes, I would have liked to see slava sharpen the knife, send it, then Ankerson test slava's sharpening job before his own, but you know what they say about hindsight.

I'm very interested to see what comes of slava working with Ankerson's edge.

I could remind that 2 tests were performed by Jim. 1st result showed 150 cuts only and blade became dull very fast.
:)

Is part of the trouble here an expectation of lasting push-cutting ability? At start, the blade push-cuts with ease via intact narrow apex, but as the apex wears down, it requires a slice/draw cut. If "dull" is the inability to push-cut newsprint or arm-hair (has the precise apex diameter there been measured?), clearly the knife isn't shaving, not until Jim touches-up the micro-bevel on the crok-stik. Was the expectation that it would still be shaving?

All im gonna say is MY manix 2 performed fantastic. I dont cut a lot of rope since I dont cut a lot of rope in real life but I cut up a lot of cardboard. So far the best test I had was my m390 military and s90v manix 2 xl, plus my elmax para 2 did surprisingly well but thats another knife. I cut cardboard 12 packs from soda and boxes I get at the post office. When I tested s110v it cut 14 12packs into tiny pieces and 20 large priority boxes and afterwards it cut phonebook paper cleanly. It looked like it was still brand new which surprised me. It was a factory edge which was at ~28-30° and I put on it my own microbevel at 36° with the full edge pro set, tapes and finished on a homemade kangaroo strop with .5 micron hand American diamond spray. Im still using it and only had to strop it once about 10 times per side on the roo strop. For a $110 knife I doubt you'll find a better performing knife than that.

Interesting thread.

Thanx for sharing your thoughts and test results.

Thanx Jim for doing additional testing.

Hey Slava,

We can also test the knife here. Mostly we use a goniometer and a CATRA but it's very consistent.

Interesting thread to say the least.
Thanks everyone for there time in this ...............

After 4 months of pre-order status, my Manix 2 s110v showed up today. I'll be interested to see how it performs. I just happen to have 30' of manilla rope in the garage. :)

Slava tested his knife today with my edge. :)

He will be posting soon I suppose. :)

Yes, exactly, Jim !
Hi Everybody !
knife made 700 cuts and stay sharp to cut paper.
My conclusion - Spoiled metal on the edge, about min. 0.5 - 1 mm,in the manufacture of the blade.

Completely removing the factory edge will make a large difference, I do that on every single knife I test......
