Spyderco Military - Best Bang for Buck knife?

Best bang for the buck would be a Rat 1/2, ESEE Avispa or Zancudo. The Avispa is probably the most robust, and at $28 for AUS-8, it's a great deal. Non-locking would be a Svord Peasant friction folder. I want to like the Military, but in that price range the PM2 and the Ritter Grip/Mini Grip are better options. Especially the Ritter which now come in m390 for the same price as before.

:D:thumbup:

Funny thing is that tip down is actually faster and more convenient. Place thumb on pivot point and indexfinger on opposite side, pull in hand, move thumb to spideyhole, done. Try tip up when seated, good luck getting your thumb all the way in your pocket.

Very true. I have a knife expectation I call "precision operation", and the Military is #1. I'm thinking about making a video about it. In an emergent situation you can't afford to compromise your secure grip for any reason. Who knows, you could be hanging upside down from your seat belt in the dark. Can you be sure you can slide your tip up knife through your palm, to open it, without dropping it?

Not enough CRUWEAR love in this thread :p

Exactly :thumbup:

I like the knife, but the tip down only carry problem kills it for me.
If it was tip up, I'd have one.
That's silly, tip down is great.
That's not really fair. Like I explained before in this thread: with my Xtra Small hands I couldn't get used to tip-up although I tried very hard, so sold all my tip-up knives and will never buy one again, because I know I won't carry them. I wouldn't like if someone would judge me as "silly" because I cannot deal with tip-up, with my girly XS hands :o Although I can also imagine that it's not completely the same the other way around.

Here are some shots of those girly XS hands of me holding a Millie I took this afternoon :D

I said T.D. is great, i think you are confused.

I've noticed that a lot of the guys who can carry tip down can also carry tip up. Seems like it's mostly the tip up guys who can't do both.
I have noticed the same thing. Also, the "only tip up" guys seem to be the ones who have started carrying since YouTube ;-)

I carry either way, depending in specifics of the knifes design and method of carry. In general though typically prefer tip down for obvious reasons.

@Jeru

Is that factory blue and on that fluted, or did you have it done?

Love seeing what appears to be pocket wear on that one. ;-)

The very first Fluted Titanium Military were blue anodized. Something made it cost prohibitive,and they stopped anodizing them

Wow, beautiful stuff. What did you use to round off the spine "ala CRK style". I'd like to do that to mine!

@jascolli

Thanks for noticing really adds to the package value in my mind. If when need to strike a fire-steel the inside of the thumb-hole still gets that job done ;-)

Belt grinder for rounded spine. The trick to think about when doing this (IMHO) is to think about not taking anything off near the tip, and just enough will then come off. Otherwise you'll loose length in the tip (and a Millie should really be all it can be with a Federal 4 inches).

The first ano ones where done with heat, that caused a lot of problems with heat distortion of the handles (most of these I think were pre stainless lock insert versions). Later I think they moved to electro anodization. The color of yours appears to be electro-ano color, I was wondering ...

Do you know the production date on the one in your pic's?

My millie is one of my favorite EDCs. Black on black, with a set of Gnoleb's blue titanium stand-offs. Beautiful, IMHO!
