Spyderco Military - Best Bang for Buck knife?

As I have stated many times, the Millie is my GOAT favorite production knife. Also, nothing I own or owned carries better and more comfortable.

I know I'm gonna be attacked by posting this (its happened before) but I dislike the military. Not a fan of S30V, but the thing that really ruins the military for me is the tip down only clip. Sure I could have it tapped for tip up, but I'd rather spend the money on a different knife.

Regardless, I'm glad you enjoy it. It's just, well not for me.

Not being attacked. But it's good you know how I feel about 90% of the knives. Since I carry strictly tip-down

Your posts inspired me to get a Mili again. It will arrive on Monday. I got away from Militaries trying out all sorts of other stuff. Its funny how we always come back full circle to the classics. I love everything about the design including the tip down carry. If a M2 comes out, I'll still carry it tip down.

A properly clipped tip up knife will not open on you. In fact, I've had several tip downs open on me and bite my leg. Never had that happen with tip up. Also, the ladies prefer tip up.

I can deal with tip down or tip up. With my Mili's, tip down enables a quick and easy Spyderdrop when deploying. The only time I would prefer tip up would be with an auto, Wave, flipper or AO, especially with a 4"+ blade. That narrows it down to the Wave since I don't carry autos and avoid AO's and flippers in general other than my little non-AO Kershaws.

Keep in mind that many folders designed for the Military (the Mili, various contracted Benchmades) aren't always clipped to pants pockets like we carry them. Many times they are clipped to vests/MOLLE and so have no seam to keep the blade pushed up against. In these cases tip down would be preferable for safe carry.

True. I carried my Police Model clipped to ballistic vest straps for years. It was to difficult to draw it from a pants pocket with a bulky duty belt in the way.

Hard to beat knife.

I'm at the forefront of my Military collection. Started with a couple of Ti frames and an s90v. I need some more super steels soon. I hope.

This is a Military thread. How did the wee-little Delica sneak in here. LOL

Because they are small , unobtrusive , efficient and they can fly under the radar and pop up unexpectedly at any time when needed
:)

Seriously though , someone else mentioned it here earlier , the Military isn't the best Bang for Buck in many countries outside of the USA .
They sell for very high prices , and in those circumstances the cheaper more budget models are more value for money .

I've owned several knives, maybe 15 to 20, of various costs from 20 bucks to 400, mostly in the 50 to 200 dollar range. The military is the best bang for your buck knife I've owned in its class and probably even a class above. Tip up, tip down, it doesn't matter. I carry it all the time because it does what it's supposed to do so well and handles things it's not supposed to do better than a lot of others regardless of price.

You can still get the regular Military with S30V/G-10 for about $130. A lot of value there. You can also step it up with premium steel and handles.

It took a while for me to buy a Military, 'cos of the tip down only carry.
But when I got one I found that easily adapted to and even well suited to this particular folder. Easily carried, easy one hand open/close, hugely versatile, top notch food knife with the 4" blade, fits all sized hands, deserving of Hall Of Fame or Classic status IMO.
Then I found something even better - a Military in S90V :D
I'm jealous. Still on the look out for one, but not prepared to pay 500 USD for it. Can't wait for S110V SprintRun or something like that. And indeed best food prep folder out there, due to length, grind, thinness and especially blade angle. Actually I think I would like it even more if it was made out of 3mm stock instead of 4.

A properly tip-down knife will not open on you either. It's about detents and how you carry. I carry my large folders in my right back-pocket, with the blade against the side of the pocket, so a tip-down knife cannot open on me whatsoever. I tip-up folder could.

Thank you! I thought people were getting bored with my repetitive Millie posts lol

I think the FFG Manix 2 is a better knife in terms of strength, especially tip strength, and is generally more user friendly. The ergonomics are a bit more one-size-fits-all on the Manix and the balance in hand is better. It's also cheaper than the Military - in fact an XL Manix 2 is still cheaper.

However, I will say this - if you carry your knife IWB, the Military is the fastest deploying knife you can carry, easily beating an automatic. The only thing that deploys faster is a Waved knife.

Hmm. Some how I've missed all the threads of Military tips breaking. If the Manix 2 was one size fits all why is it to small?

Yes. It is a classic.

Yes, it is one of the best in performance to cost, especially for those with large hands or that seat gloves while working.
