Spyderco Military vs. Benchmade Griptilian

I am looking to get my first real knife, and have narrowed it down to these two.

BTW, I cannot stand and will not put up with any blade play, so if you make a recommendation, please take that into consideration. Also, my price limit is around $115, plus or minus $10.

I like everything about the Military EXCEPT the liner lock. I'm not worried about the strength, but I am worried that it might develop unrepairable blade play.

I can't fault the Griptilian except in the width and overall bulky shape of the handle. I love the axis lock. If I did get the griptilian it would be the full size orange model.

I had thought about the BM 710, but since it is only offered in D2, I thought it would rust quite easily. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks

BTW, this is my first post, so if I put this in the wrong section, please let me know. Thanks again.

Out of those two? Military for sure.

I'd suggest the Kershaw Junkyard Dog II CB as well though. Locks up like a bank vault, D2 steel, G10 scales, and comfy design.
Handle one if you can. You'll love it.

And D2 can rust, but if you're going to get a "real knife" you should learn to maintain anyways.
A simple oil wipe down and cleaning every month or so will keep things working fine.

And by the way, welcome to the forums.

The paramilitary's three inch blade is smaller than I would like

How does d2 respond to acids in fruits?

EDIT: just rereading over everything and: thanks for the welcome!

Spyderco Military all the way. Those models come with what's called an eccentric pivot screw which allows the blade to be adjusted for wear and tear.

It's slim with a wonderful blade shape. The G-10 is strong, dual nested liners increase strength, but keep it slip, splinter picker tip, round hole, I don't see where you could go wrong with the Military. :)

D2 won't like it. S30V won't have a problem with it, but D2 really would need to be oiled and wiped down rather quickly.

about the liner lock, it is detrimental to the mechanism to open it w/ inertia? i have a cheap knife that i play with and i do it all the time for fun.

I really dont think you have to worry about rust on D2
I work in the marine industry and really never clean my knives. I've yet to have any problems with rust on any of my carry knives. D2 is almost stainless.

Cheap knives have cheap liners. Spyderco's liner locks are arguably the best in the business. It won't hurt it to flip or snap it open with force.

so plain water won't kill a D2 blade? only acids?

D2 is 0.5% away from the 11.5-12% needed to be considered a "stainless" steel. You'd most likely be fine with some water, but I'd still keep it dry. Consider it a simple carbon steel and treat it as such and you won't have any rust problems.

People have reported rust specks/spotting problems when carrying a D2 para IWB. This is probably due to the salt content of the body's precipitation.

hmm.... Benchmade 710 vs Spydie military..... axis lock vs liner....same blade length......aarrgghh...i like spyderco......s30v vs D2....

You're wrong it can rust, but it certainly won't rust easily. If I was going to rule out a knife in D2 it wouldn't be because of its stain resistance but rather because D2 can be harder to sharpen. Like Jon Leflar said, show your D2 a little monthly love and you will be fine.

If I had to choose from your two choice I would probably get the Grip. But that's just because the military is friggin huge and I don't need anything that is almost 10" overall. If you like the military and not the liner lock look to the paramilitary. It's not freakishly long like the military and uses the compression lock which is supposed to be better.

yeah..... i dont like the idea of the imminent possibility of rust....

I've been spoiled on stainless steels myself. I recently noticed a couple of tiny rust spots on my Landi PSK (O-1 or 1095 I believe). Went out and picked up a little 600 grit sandpaper to get it out, but it really made me notice that it is not stainless and needs a little care.
