Spyderco Military vs. Benchmade Griptilian

 So they aren't adjustable now? Too bad.

You can still adjust the pivot screw tension.....it's just easier now with the non eccentric pivot screw. Eccentric pivots require a special tool to get the blade re-centered, and the perfect tension.

Once again, thanks for all the help. I think that I have decided on the Military, with the Grip as an inexpensive alternative. I had thought about the spyderco endura/pacific salt as another alternative, but I had read about lockbacks routinely having vertical blade play. I really like the spyderco design, but wish that they wouldn't have the play. Please correct me if I'm wrong about the endura.

You're wrong about the endura. ;)

I have several Spyderco knives with lock back locks and never had play on any of them.

I did own a Military, but sold it. The blade performs very well, but the knife is let down by the liner lock.
All of the Spyderco folders that I now own are lock backs and I favour the unlined, lightweight knives: Delica and Endura III, Calypso Jr and Pacific Salt. You can expect a minor amount of blade play with Spyderco lock backs. It doesn't bother me too much, but I do prefer the bomb-proof lock up of the Benchmade Axis Lock.

I favour variants of the RSK Mk1 and 710

Give me a TSEK..

Ritter Grip, or 710..

nutnfancy has a review on youtube and shows that the endura has blade

play and he says the most endura's come from the factory like that. Whether

it's true or not; i still wouldn't by one.

IMHO, Military is probably the best choice in the OP's price range.

Holla

Don't take nutnfancy's too serious. I've owned several spyderco lock backs and none of them have blade play. Also that Holla thing is really annoying.

about the 710, how does the d2 hold up?

D2 has been around forever, if it wasn't good they wouldn't make high end knives out of it. I know it's Dozier's steel of choice, which should say something to you.

what i meant is about rust resistance - i know, people have told me otherwise, but there is that little nagging feeling about the un-stainlessness. Then again i really dont know what i'm talking about; ive had no experience with any of the steels in question.

I take it that nutnfancy works for G. Sakai, in Seki City, Japan then? In my opinion, he's full of it. I own several Enduras (all generations and many variations), and don't have blade play issues with any of them.

All I can say is, you're missing out.;)

If you really can't handle the slightest possibility of rust then the Spyderco Pacific Salt which uses H1 steel will probably suit you best. Also don't look too closely at the properties of the steel when dealing with stain resistance, as the surface of the steel makes a huge difference. If you don't take care of your blade by wiping it down after occasional use, even your S30V will develop stain/rust spots. Just because a steel is stainless doesn't mean you should show it any less maintenance than a carbon steel.

blade is VG-10, has a lock back, nearly 4" long and retails for around $100 but can be found for about $50 on keenzo.com

It depends on what you consider a lot of bladeplay. Maybe the endura moves like a 1/4 of a millimeter. Seemed like it was not bladeplay to me, but when I got my Caly 3, it didn't even move 1/100 of a millimeter. (Well maybe that's a little exaggerated, but you get the point).

what should i do, if i got a pacific salt, IF, and it had some blade play? is there any way to fix that on a lockback knife?

inmop the spyderco police 3 is better than the military, it has steel liners but is actually slimmer than the military and has a bigger blade and a back lock which i prefer over a liner lock. i also think the spyderco police 3 makes the benchmade 710 look like a toy when you put them side by side.
