Spyderco Military vs. Benchmade Griptilian

I've been thinking - I don't want to get something that's so expensive that I wouldn't want to use for fear of losing it. I also don't want something that is so expensive that I wouldn't want to use it for fear of harming it.

For me, since I do not have a regular job, $105-125 is a big chunk o' money that cannot be quickly or easily replaced. I'm also tending to think that I wouldn't be needing $120 worth of knife for the amount of use I would be able to require of it. I might be shifting my focus onto something less expensive, something I wouldn't be afraid of losing (well, not as much), something I wouldn't be afraid of using. The military is a great knife, along with the paramilitary and the police models. The 710 also seems to be wonderful as well. But I think that I don't need that much knife for the uses planned. If I wanted to get a keepsake to hand down to my children or something, I wouldn't be looking in the sub $200 range. If I needed a beast that could survive through Armageddon, I would get the military or one of its cousins. But for me, all I need is a good, quality knife that isn't so dear (to me and to my wallet) that I can't boldly use it on camping trips or for EDC or for cleaning up the flower border.

I think I will be considering:

1. Any Endura, mainly the waved model
2. The Pacific Salt, for its cool yellow handle :D and rustproof steel
3. I am open for suggestions! Anything with a 3+ in. blade, solid lockup, quality materials, and is less than $100 dollars (preferably less than $80)

Thanks guys for guiding me to a good choice, even though it wasn't really what it started out being.

Cheers, and good night :)

As I recommended to you earlier, think seriously about the Pacific Salt. It's rust proof, has a useful blade shape, and is actually quite light for the size of knife that it is. When I got mine in hand it felt much bigger than I thought it would. It's definitely not as smooth as one of BM's AXIS knives, but it's a great working knife.

Using your nail to open a spyderco hole hurts:thumbdn:, but using my

thumb-skin doesn't at all.

Go for an Endura 4 then! I must say it is a wise decision you're making. An E4 will do anything and everything you want to do and will last you a good long time. If you're into cool handle colors, check out the White FRN handle E4, and the Foliage Green E4.

Have you looked into any of kershaws offerings? A shallot maybe or something like the junkyard dog?

I personally like the Pacific Salt better than the Endura

H1 is really 'da shizzle'; yellow is cooler than grey, OD, black or white; plus I kinda don't like the 'deflection' of the Endura handle, steel liners and all, when put under lateral pressure - a problem you won't get with the singe-piece handle found on the Salt

well, truth be told, I like my Salt even better since she returned full flat ground :D

Who did the flat grind on the pacific that looks swwwweeeeeeeettttttttttt!!!! Do post more pics!

Truth be told the Tenacious would be your best cheap option if you don't want to spend much ($35).

back on topic

I also like the Salt better over the Endura because of the zero-maintenance factor
- rivets not screws,
- all H1 hardware,
- 1-piece handle,
- titanium clip that can be unscrewed with just a coin, etc

I hear great things about the Tenacious, but I would rather pay more and have it made in a non-communist country (:cough: China).

I'm still debating between the Endura and the Pacific Salt. I prefer the light weight, the color, the lesser amount of maintenance, and the rust-proof-ness of the Salt, but I really like the extra edge-holding ability of the VG-10 over the H1. Also, if they had a waved Pacific Salt, I would buy it right now. That's another thing - you can get a waved Endura, but not a waved Salt.

Should I start a new thread for Endura vs Salt? I think it might be unnecessary, but it really isn't about the Military vs. Griptilian anymore.

I read in a previous thread about custom waving (?). Any kind of ballpark price on that? Could I do it myself with a grinder/dremel? I also read that a guy "waved" his knife by putting a zip-tie on his thumbhole - nice idea, but I would like a cleaner look.

H1 is a funny steel. It hardens the more you grind it, so you'd probably be going through dremel bits by the box. Best to get someone to do it for you with a belt grinder.

If you won't consider the Tenacious , the pick up and Endura or Pacific Salt. H1's edge retention out of the box is lower then VG-10, but will increase the more you use and sharpen it.

My guess would be Tom Krein. A typical regrind for him is $35-45 I belive. It might be more because H1 will eat belts.

sorry, but since I live in Romania shipping to Tom & back would have been a PITA
a local knifemaker did the salt for me
however he usually does his own designs, not piece-of-cake modifications ;)

Wow. That is a nice knife.

Shipping would have been a pain. I wonder if Tom has reground any H1 though... I'd love a flat ground H1 blade. I know that it's not possible to do (at least not yet) a fully flat ground in production because the steel hardens up by the time you start on the second side.

Hey guys! I think that I have decided on the Pacific Salt. Thank you all for contributing, and I hope that some day I will be able to return the favor.

I think you made an excellent choice.

I would recommend carrying it for a couple months before looking into the wave mod tho. You will probably find you like it just the way it is.

I doubt I will actually grind a wave. Ok, I'll go so far to say I wont. Most likely I will do the little zip-tie mod, and if I need a clean look for something, I'll cut it off and replace it later.

The salt is my #1 choice as well. I have 3 of them. Their lightweight and non-worry rust free blades are the charm.
