Spyderco Military vs. Benchmade Griptilian

If your looking for USA made, then Military, Paramilitary or even the Chinook

is the best Syperco has to offer.

Chinook is a tank, and heavy like one. The blade shape is a bit aggressive. The Military is on the big side.

If I was in your shoes, I'd take the Para in digi camo. Awesome lock, great blade and handle shape just like the military. The blade is 3", but if you think you need more then that, grab something fixed from RAT Cutlery.

what about police 3 (g10 model)?

i dont mind japan-made

The Police 3 is cool, but it's almost 4 1/2" long. That's a seriously big folder for your first purchase.

Look at some of CRKT's line up. I'm the biggest Spyderco fan you'll find, but CRKT has some good stuff on the lower price ranges. Good steel, good construction, fun features.

IMO, the military is better than the police 3.

And also if you were to get pulled over by the police, the police 3 would look

little more illegal than the military.

I don't think he'll be driving for at least two years. :p ;)

my dad is the if-you-already-have-one-why-get-another-one-type, so what i get now will be it for at least 6 years

so yes, it would be big for a first purchase, but then again, it would be a long time until the next

Havent read everything, but I'm just going to chime in and say that rust is hardly an issue with D2.

I carried a 710d2 while working in the bush all summer and at worst it got a few specs of very superficial rust that basically just wiped off. and there were days that I was soaked up to my armpits so it certainly didnt get any babying and no oiling. Theres just a little bit of tarnishing around the thumb stud.

I looked at a Spyderco Military and I didnt care for the size of it, the handle was almost an inch longer than necessary to hold the blade, and seeing as it's a very big folder to begin with extra handle length really is a waste for me.

right now i can get a 710 for 102 + shipping, and a police 3 for 125 inc. shipping, and a military for 105 inc. shipping, and a para for 113 inc. shipping

Both are great knives, I like them about equal and I rotate them for EDC, you won't go wrong with either and yes I prefer them over the Benchmade.

i'm sorry, but when you say both, which knives are you talking about?

EDIT: forgive me for reading over the title-eek-i need to slow down

thanks for the help! right now the police 3 and military are top choices, police edging the military out slightly because of the extra length and the better lock(?). If my dad deems them too expensive, the pacific salt looks real nice.

gotta go now; I have a biology mid-term tomorrow(:o:thumbdn::eek::eek::eek::mad::eek:) and I need to study

For general EDC (there was a thread on this I believe) I'd still choose the Military. Better handle, thicker blade with more belly. The police model is really just about packing as much blade as possible into the slimmest handle possible. Thin long blade in a thin long handle.

If your dad doesn't like the $120+ price tag, try explaining features and such. Like why his sodbuster, though stout and sturdy, is trumped by modern CPM steels with fiberglass laminate handles. :D

Where are you finding these prices at? (I hope it aint ebay )

Watch him :foot:

eBay is nice with reputable dealers, but a police 3 goes for around $130, militarys for around $135 and para's for around $135.

onecalledjimbo: I send you a visitor message. ;)
