this is gonna start somthin, i just received this knife today, its the NEW VERSION, full serrated from ABC-DIRECT. first of, the knife only has one liner, very bad, second, the one stainless liner it has is very thin, third, it just sucks, sorry all you military fans, but people say this is better than my Benchmade AFCK, yea right. a couple of things i would suggest to the designers of this mess, get rid of that huge cut out in the g-10 to disengage the liner lock, no good for a knife fighter, or stabbing. also make the knife have two TITANIUM LINERS, this will give the tang a non stop perfect fitted lock, make a bigger guard on the blade, and the last thing is make the blade/handle ratio smaller, this blade should have a 37/8in. blade, and a 47/8in. handle. ps, and dont tell me the reason for the one pissy liner is to lessen the overall weight, news flash SPYDERCO, titanium weighs much lighter, hence have two titanium liners instead of one stainless liner. HAVE A FINE DAY ALL.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Maybe a little sugar next time?

Anyway the Military uses a much stronger G-10 than the Benchmade AFCK that is why there is no need for 2 liners. Simply look at the two and compare the thickness of the G-10 and understand that it is 6 Weave. Not sure what the Benchmade weave number is. I also carry the AFCK in it's smaller form and love it. They are both great knives and each has it's advantages. However the Military with a CPM 440 blade would get the nod if I went to the larger blade style.

Sal,

Ever thought of making a smaller Military?

Maybe just a 1/2" larger than a Delica.

Rage, what would you like to sell/trade it for? I have a mint flat grind Applegate Combat folder -- double liners & passed all liner lock tests -- that I might be willing to trade. Please let me know.

Although I don't own a Military (but hope to one day), I thought I could add to this "somthin." I was under the impression that Spyderco's aim was not to design a fighting knife, I don't think any of their knives are really designed to be. They are supposed to be cutting tools. The Military, as my understanding, has the large cut out and the large handle to facilitate easier heavy-duty cutting and use with gloves. However, becuase of it fit-and-finish and design, it can serve to be a good carry for self-defense in addition.
just my 2 cents

pk,

You're pretty close on all counts. It was designed as a workhorse that could be easily handled in all climates and weather conditions even with gloved hands. It is not a combat knife although I gotta tell you that the blade can be snapped out faster than most autos can be brought into play. Damn fine. It is actually stronger than most twin liner models so I don't know what rage's beef is there. To my way of looking at things, what something provides is more important than whether it meets accepted norms. The miltary is stout and safe period. The CPM440V fits that design criteria too... extra long edge holding to obviate the need for excessive field sharpening. Sounds like rage didn't do as much homework on the design objectives as he could have... hence his disappointment. We've all done that. Me too, when I bought a MadDog pygmyATAK2 only to realize that it wasn't gonna work for me. Sold it 9 days later. Nice knife mind you... just not something that I could really use.

Rage, to begin with, the Military is stiffer than your BM. The reason being that the G10 is thicker and better. Second, the blade is much thicker than on your BM's, .156 inch versus .12 inch. This means more strength.
Third, the blade has more belly for more utility. Fourth, it uses 440V, much better. But, a folder is not meant as a prybar anyway so super strength is not as big an issue.

Tell you what, I have a never used AFCK, Black-Ti combo serration, which I'll trade you. Let's see if you were just blowing smoke or you stand behind your comments. I also have a CQC7 BM full size, Black-Ti, part Serr. which I'll trade for it.

it's me again, with all the replies i shall recieve, nothing covers the true facts about this knife, yes it is a great great utility folder, but i was referring it as a fighter, sorry for the harsh post. By the way all, i am keeping the military, i might trade it to my cousin for another bm910sbt. PS, TOO MIKE TURBER, NO MATTER HOW STRONG 6 WEAVE G-10 IS, IT WILL NEVER BE STRONGER THAN TITANIUM, I MUCH RATHER A TITANIUM 2ND LINER, WITH REGULAR G-10 ANY DAY.

Rage, concerning starting something, I know how you feel. I made some observations about a first model Military that I picked up and, man, did the fecal material hit the wind circulating device.

I have found that most of the people around either really love the knife (and I mean REALLY LOVE) or they are like you and I and can live without it.

I am going to give this one a second chance though. The old model has too many good points for me to ignore the newer model that is now available.

I am getting rid of my older model so that I can "upgrade" to the newer model and see if I like it better. I LOVE the neck carry sheath that Mike Sastre is offering for the NEW model military. See the posting in the Spyderco Forum.

I agree with you that a double liner would be nice on this knife as opposed to just a little nested lock.
-------------------------
Mike, a smaller Military WOULD be fantastic! Good idea!

I don't own an AFCK, however I do own an EDI Genesis 1 w/ G-10 scales and dual titanium liners. To be honest, when I apply pressure to the handles, I see more flex in my EDI Genesis than in my Spyderco Military ( even though both knives use higher grade G-10). Not to knock the Genesis any, as it is still the knife I carry most often.
just my two cents.
thanks

It just goes to show that there are different strokes for different folks - I have a 4 year old AFCK (little used in good condition) which I like, BUTT I also have a third generation Military which I like alot and carry every day - for me the military is a better knife than the AFCK!

Back a couple years ago, if one were to ask me which knife is better, AFCK or Military, I would have spouted about the AFCK. But ever since I got my second Military (440V serrated), my AFCK's have been living inside their blue boxes. One of the things that really won me over about the Military is the 440V - better performing steel than ATS-34 (though ATS continues to a be a favorite of mine). The partial liner of the Military used to concern me early on, but the more I carried it, the more I began to appreciate the slimness of a single nested liner.

Not having handled a Military yet I can't comment on most of the details you describe. However you mention specifically the one liner and how you would prefer two Ti ones. So my question is do you see a lot of flex with the handles on the Military as they are now?

-Cliff

Cliff, it is one of the stiffest manufactured folders out there. It is far stiffer than the BM's with their dual liners. It is a very sturdy knife for it's weight.

I didn't want to take part in this "war", but when a few of you all say that the Military is stiffer than any of the BM's with 2 Ti. liners, I have to dissagree. From my experience with the "New" Military, I once had a few months ago, it is in no way stiffer than any of my BM's with the exception of the Ascents. -AR

If you are to squeeze the liners together in the middle, it actually flexes a little. This is impossible with my BM's using the same or much greater pressure in the same area. I realize that Spyderco's G10 is 6 weave rather than 4, but it cannot stand up to the Ti. liners. -AR

hello again everyone, today i took a drive to my cousins and traded my Military for a 910sbt. My cousin loves the military, he says he loves the steel, and the fact that it is very light for a big knife. Well, now i got my 2nd stryker and it is much better than the military, overall construction is flawless, for me, i think the Military is for the weak, and the Benchmades is for the strong. I got to say though, nothing ever beat my clip point Mtech. SOCOM, that is the best folder in the world, better than an Emerson custom even.

I gotta say Rage and Jackyl, you're both so wrong.

I have all the top of the line Benchmades and not one of them is stiffer than the new Military. They are all stiffer than my old military.

Rage, I'm glad you like you BM with that puny, thin, little blade and inferior steel. If it works for you, good enough.

Oh, and Microtech makes a good knife, but my Rekat is tougher by far.

HEY, COBALT, IF YOU LOVE THAT MILITARY SO MUCH AND THINK IT IS STRONG, GIVE THE BLADE 10 HARD HITS ON THE SPINE, I BET IT WILL FAIL, MINE DID, AND ALSO, THE MILITARY'S BLADE WOULD SNAP IN TWO IF U PRYED WITH IT, MY STRYKER FLEXES, DO TO THE 2 6AL4V TITANIUM LINERS, REMEMBER, WHEN SOMETHING IS VERY HARD AND STIFF, IT WILL SNAP, AND BREAK,-MILITARY 6 WEAVE STIFF G-10 SCALE, BUT THE STRYKER WITH FLEXIBAL TITANIUM, WITH SOFTER G-10 WILL FLEX, TRY IT BUDDY............
