Spyderco...oooh how I hate you

i always thought spydercos were ugly too so i never even bothered to give my attention to them, i started reading some threads on them and hurd some good things and their looks started to grow on me too. As of now im eyeing the Manix, as they say its built like a tank.

I loved Spydies at first sight. After I learned something about knives, I love them even more. I'm a function first man myself, but I care about the looks too. I think that one doesn't necessarily exclude another (take the Ed Schempp Persian, for instance).

I love my Spydercos for their quality and performance...and its always nice to own at least a few unique knives which many spydercos are!

p.s. Hey Sal, keep up the great work making us new knives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never really understood why people think Spydercos are ugly... I really like them.

And having a bunch of other knives, I've always come to an old GIN 1 Native :D

Damn you Spyderco, you're like the ugly girl who's a really good lay. I'm ashamed to be seen with you but I can't seem to keep my hands off of you.

If shes a really good lay, and shes a sweetheart, then who the hell cares what she looks like? Go to the mall together and let everyone see you together; Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead! :D

How could anyone call a Lum Chinese ugly with it's perfectly sweeping top curve, or a Herbst with it's understated elegance, or a Civilian with it's delicately hooked tip? These are but a few examples of works of art with outstanding functionality. Spyderco makes the most diverse product line of all major manufacturers and there is a beauty there for whomever has the desire to seek it.

He speeks Truth! Purposefull functionality, combined with Unique design has a superior beauty all its own!

26 spyders and counting , still love the look , feel and quality of this brand

Grapevine:

For a “more gentlemanly” Spyderco, check out the Lava.

It is quite beautiful & very functional. I just got mine a few days ago.

My first Spyderco was Native and I bought it, just to try S30V for $40. It out cut all knives, which I had at that point, including BM551 and 520. Later I wanted a gent’s knife and somebody recommended Kopa to me. I fall in love at first sight and now, six Kopas later I still think it is one of the most beautiful production knives.
Than there were Adventura, full size Persian (actually I have four of them), Dodo, Lil Temp, Caly3, Delica4 and they are not just excellent users, I love their appearance. I feel something really magic about Dodo.
I do not have that many knives, made by other brands. I sold couple BMs a while ago, gave away couple other knives. Why would I need them? All of them have the same classic look and not enough personality. Kershaw’s also look different, but it is not my cup of tea.

I feel something really magic about Dodo.

*snip*

Me too. The only reason i can think of that it was discontinued was a *relative* lack of popularity from people just being open-minded enough about a knife that's a little different.

IMO, it's One of the greatest folding knives ever made.

I'm the opposite, I remember being younger without much money (younger then now with even less money) and looking at the fully serrated and plain edge spydercos and the "stained glass" style cut out ones, thinking how badly I wanted one, but they were overpriced at the store I frequented.

When I was at a flea market I did something I shouldn't have done... I bought 2 frost imitation spydercos for $6.00 for the pair. One I used for work (construction, general labor, etc) nothing extreme and didn't have a problem, the other I didn't touch. But the difference between the real deal and the fakers is staggering...

Anyways, I got into other knife lines but then I saw the spot neck knife and thought "love at first sight" and bought it up, then I wanted a plain edge folder so I got the endura, now I need the sharpener and want a fully serrated folders. It's all good stuff.

A while back (close to two years ago, IIRC), I bought my first Delica 3 "for lack of anything else" and I had some cash burning a hole in my pocket. Fast forward to today - 25'ish and still thinking of buying more:p

I used to feel the same way. I was frustrated that you could only get the good steels in FRN, rather than stainless. Now everything has great steel and they work great. Think of them as tools rather than things that look nice on a dresser.

I really like the looks, clip, size and cutting ability of the Caly 3.

Much love for the DoDo here too.

It and the Yojimbo are the first two knives I was actually driven to collect multiple copies of for the sole reason that I doubt anything so across the board excellent will come around again for a long long time. That and everyone knows blue trumps black.

Spyderco knives really aren't ugly, they are just very very different from the regular fodder that bombards most knife enthusiasts.

The Dodo is my favorite Spyderco out of my meger collection (Delica, Manix, Dodo):o . This will change soon.

I get Spyderco's because they are the best knife designs out there because Spyderco puts form after function. Some may consider them ugly but it is more acurate to say that they are unconventional, which they are.

Cheers to Spyderco!

Wow. You exhumed a two year old thread for this. Love indeed :jerkit:

I've never understood how people can think spyderco's are ugly, it was love at first sight as soon as I saw one, then I loved them even more when I handled one. All other knives look boring to me. (Actually there are 2 spyderco's I don't like the look of, the Poliwog and the Native but all the others are beautiful)

I too used to think spyderco's were butt ugly back when I was hooked on benchmade's. Then one day I saw the add for the carbon fiber bg-42 millie..... all of a sudden I had to have one and I've loved spyderco's ever since.

By the way Sal.. thanks for designing the millie, then offering it in carbon fiber and bg-42. I absolutely love this knife.
