Spyderco QC

search the forums and you'll find that blade play in spyderco was considered normal...now it"s ????

How long to stock parts? Benchmade replaced the blade on a spike last year...that knife has been out of production since 1998.

Why keep posting about (a) unacceptable blade play (b) not supporting the warranty and repair service that was orignally sold with a knife and (c) not offering a true repair service? Simple, I'm a knife nut that believes consumers should know that this is not acceptable. And to sum up what really irks my craw...BLADE PLAY IS NORMAL???? That's like saying the earth is flat. By the way, in case you wanted to know, I've got plenty of spydercos (3 lockbacks, 4 liner locks, 2 fixed blades, sharpmaker and given spydercos many times as presents) and I've experienced (ouch) warranty and repair.

2 guardsgirls, thanks for the tip I looked up the 3guardsmen. Guess you see yourself as a "real" internet sherrif. Since i spent years in the show-me-state where jesse and cole are heroes, i should consider being pursued by you as a compliment.

brownshoe,

the blade play is NOT normal. A question is: does a tiny vertical blade play (upwards) which appears ONLY during strong pushing is acceptable?

I think, although I do not like it at all, this phenomenon appears often, not only by Spyderco (as STR wrote).
For small blades, as Peter said, it is a question of how expensive a knife would be. For folders a la Manix, I have no reason not to believe in what Sal said: if one needs a very strong lock, a tiny blade play is unavoidable. Because of physics?

So, what is an alternative?

The answer I got at the Spyderco site forum:

Very true.

Is that an alternative: to live with a perfect Sebenza - without Delica or MiniManix? I doubt.

I love Spyderco knives, and I own twice has many Spydercos has any other brand of knife, and I especially respect Sal's involvment.
BUT, I do have to be more concerning when picking out my next Spyderco because they do tend to have more anomolies than other manufactures of similar price.
My main EDC is my beloved Para, but I have had to send it in twice due to QC issues.
I do not have unrealistic expectations, I love Spyderco's designs and innovations so much that I am patient with the QC issues and will still buy Spyderco products because when you do get a good example it is in a league of its own.
Maybe Spyderco has to skimp just a little on QC to afford the fantastic materials they offer us for the price. But there is no denying that ordering a Spydie without looking at it can be a gamble.

Franco I've read many times the explanations of why the blade play is OK for spydercos. Two things keep me from believing.

First, I am not a knife designer, but other manufacturers do not claim it is OK. For example Queen has a problem with their Mt.Man lockbacks and they have fixed a fair number of them for free.

Second, I have many lockbacks w/o blade play that have given many years of good service, Spyderco Harpy, Matriarch, Mouse, Delica, Cold Steel voyager, Puma general, buck lightweight, 110 and gent's knife, japanese frost, pakistani bullet. Some of these knives have suffered severe abuse (e.g. batoning with a brick). Only the puma got some play after 15 years of service and it was in the pivot pin. I fixed it with a good whack with a hammer.

But what the heck do I know, I'm just a brownshoe.
