Spyderco Sage Goodness

I wondered about that. Is the shade of titanium predicated on the random batch of ti that spyderco gets or some other physical factor?
He anodized that one but normally the shade of each individual knife is pretty much random, they [spyderco] doesn't put any sort of finish on them. In this thread (or possible the other recent sage series thread) there was a pic of two knives next to each other with a pretty big difference in shade of the Ti.

I've said it before but that fade job looks awesome man!

It did it almost looks it it would match a metallic pearl white paint job on the imaginary gto that I don't own lol.

The Sage 2 just came in. Some observations. Not sure if this has been done a dozen times.

1)Not sure why it is called a Poor Man's Sebenza. It bears no resemblance in hand to one whatsoever besides materials and the locking mechanism. A CRKT Drifter and a Boker Epicenter feels more similar to a Sebbie than a Sage 2.

2) The Sage 2 is a strange beast, it almost feels like an imposter Spyderco. It lacks that fully ergonomic feel of an FRN Endura or Delica and when closed is potentially even a little uncomfortable in hand due to the width of the knife in its closed semblance and having to account for the Spydie hole. Still not too bad though, when opened it turns into a Titanium Spyderco. The familar comfortable ergos of a Spyderco are back and you can actually feel the beveled edges of the Ti scales contribute to the overall knife in hand.

This is my first Taichung knife and it is on par with the two Benchmade Pinnacle 750 Ti Framelocks that I picked up for between $150-$200 not to long ago but were too big for me to EDC. Edges are a bit sharp but its a very nice knife for the price. Everything else has been gone over before so I will dispense with that. But I'm definitely grateful that it does feel more like a Spyderco than a clone of a different knife. Would I trade it for a Bradley Alias in a heartbeat? For sure. Would I definitely keep it for a spell vs. trading it out? For sure!

Edit: the other thing that I think I'm having a problem with is the one I got is too new too cared for, too clean of a knife, the ergos are starting to grow on me fast! I can't wait for spring to come and try it out on a hike of yardwork.

Beautiful photos of a beautiful blade.

My Sage 1 ended up in my father in laws hands and possession because he mistakenly thought I gave it to him as a gift when I was actually just showing it to him. His eyes lit up and he said "you shouldn't have". I couldn't break the news to him and the situation was priceless.

Time to get another one for me.

Wow thats funny. I guess you wont be showing him any more knives. Thats how good the Sages are....so good that once you show it to someone, they will not give it back!

Mine will be in today so I'll try to provide some insight, but I think a well worn one like Mr. Pearl's above has a certain appeal over a sparkling clean one IMO.

See that little curve in the leaf blade? In a typical G10 Spyderco its not an issue. In the Sage it's a little offputting. Once you open the Sage 2 it just becomes a regular Spyderco and that's when I can appreciate it better. The little scale bevels help it out a lot. It has this curved shape and in your mind if you've never handled it, it makes you think that it is ergonomic G10 perfection. But in reality it has the boxiness of most Ti framelocks that I have handled. And that's where you either can appreciate the feel of a Ti Framelock or not in combination with the aesthetics at least in my opinion, bc G10 and FRN are a heck of a lot more comfortable in hand than a metal scales.

Got my Sage 2 and I'm pretty pleased. It's a tight race between it and the Sage 1 for winner of the classier. There's a bare bones appeal to the Sage 2 that drew me to it much like a Sebenza draws you in. The 2 is noticeably slimmer in hand than the 1 in a good way.

One thing that's noticeable to me or at least a very good optical illusion is that the Sage 2 blade has slightly less cutting edge (negligible really) though they're advertised to be the same. I measured the height of the blade across the spider logo and the Sage 1 was about 1/16" taller. Looking at both closed, the Sage 1 blade appears to be a shade longer. No big deal, but just wondering if others noticed the same thing. I think I read somewhere the blades aren't identical between the models.

Considered selling the 1 before I got the 2 because I wanted the 2 more (and thinking about pimping a Southard) and figured I'd always reach for the 2, but....that's gonna be a tough call. They're both great in their own way.

I was also taken by the advertising of the blades being "the exact same", but was later told that they're different due to the nature of the locking mechanisms of the knives they're on. That makes sense to me, however being different in width and/or length makes no sense on something that supposed to have the "exact same blade" in all models.

Again, it's negligible and not something that bothers me, but when I hold both models vertically and open them, I notice a slight difference in the blade "breadth" between the two.

Besides pearl's pic I was wondering if anyone here has had their Sage 2 scales stonewashed and could post pics? Thinking about getting Maprik to do this especially if anyone has had a Sage done by him.

^ Those look awesome! I don't like the color blue in general but I would buy that blue sage in a heartbeat!

I love how the blue catches the light. I'm going to be tempted to do that to mine when it arrives.

After a brief stay of maybe 3 weeks combined, my 2 good buddies Sage 1 and 2 will have to find a new home with a more expensive grailish knife on its way. :( and :) at the same time. I'll definitely miss the sweet ergos of the Sage. Sad to see them go, but maybe we will reunite one day...or when the compression lock Sage comes out. :) The Sage series is definitely a gateway drug to bigger and spendier toys...be warned!

I'm actually going the opposite direction going to look for a caly or ukpk/delica two fer. I've owned the pinnacle by bench made, sage 2 and handled 2 sizes of sebbies. I love Ti frame locks but I know that I won't edc them over g10 or frn scaled knives.

The Sage 1 with its carbon fiber scales makes for a classy EDC with good texture on the grip. :)
