Okay, all you Spyderco fans can come to the rescue of Sal etal and that's fine.

I debated over the last four days whether or not to report this but I MUST! This is the crappiest service I've ever received not only from a knife company but ANY company!

Let me say, I'm no "newbie" here as I've been a member of BF since the beginning. I've never returned anything to Spyderco or ANYONE else until this. I did however ask Kershaw awhile back for a thumb stud and they sent me one that actually worked!

Okay, here goes. I purchased a Micro Dyad from the sprint run and wasn't satisfied with the bone scales and the sharpness of the blades weren't up to snuff. I reported this in a thread about the Micro Dyad and Sal personally said to return it to his attention and he would take care of it.

I also had a large Dyad that had some buggered scale screws and a worn clip. I purchased this knife from a well respected member here on BF about 10years ago, and I couldn't figure out why he had taken this great knife apart!

I had previously e-mailed Spyderco about the Dyad's scale screws and received an e-mail that they were sending me some "used" screws for the clip! Man, talk about non-communication! Of course, the screws did not fit the scales or the clip! Thanks for the screws though but too bad they couldn't be used on a Spyderco knife or ANY knife for that matter! I still thanked them for trying!

Fast forward: I sent the Micro Dyad along with the large Dyad back to Spyderco and to Sal's attention. I asked Sal if he could send me another Micro Dyad or at least sharpen the one I sent back. I also asked if he would replace the scale screws and the clip, (I sent it with the clip removed), on the Dyad and PLEASE resharpen the blades. I was fully prepared for paying for this work.

About six weeks later, I receive a package at my post office. I open it and it's a Micro Dyad and the large Dyad with a hand written note that tells me the Micro Dyad was "hand picked" by Sal and the large Dyad was being returned as Spyderco didn't have clip or scale screws.

Here's the kicker! The Micro Dyad that "Sal" "personally" picked out, was somewhat sharper than the one I sent back but had some dings that were worse than the one I sent back. Also, the Dyad was returned unsharpened and beyond that, two of the clip screw holes were STRIPPED!

Yes, that's correct. I sent a Spyderco knife back to the Spyderco factory for sharpening and scale and clip replacement and they send me back a knife with NO sharpening done, NO scale screw replacement, NO clip and last but not least, TWO CLIP SCREW HOLES TOTALLY STRIPPED!

That's right folks!

I'm not calling Spyderco on the phone or trusting Sal again or worrying about what you guys will think about this. I'm saying that this experience soured me forever on Spyderco knives!

By the way, no matter how strenuous you guys slam me, I'm stating facts that needed to be recorded here!

Sure seems to be a lot of unhappiness with Spyderco lately. O well I will continue buying them until I get a bad experience which I highly doubt will ever happen.

You're going to get hurt! I too just had a bad experience with Spyderco's Customer Service. I posted here a few days ago about it. I sent them a Military with a off center blade, and they sent it back without repairing anything. I have noticed a lot of this going on lately with Spyderco, I wonder if they are scaling back on their repair/replacement policy.

That's the straw that broke the camels back!

I've had it. That's THREE bad CS reports in THREE years I've been a member here.

No more Spyderco for me....

Kidding :).

I'm pretty sure even the mighty Sal is just human. I'm also pretty sure the high expectations due to Spyderco's excellent tract record play a part.

I have not seen anyone get flamed for just posting his personal experience with W&R.

Let's see how this plays out.

I had an excellent experience with their customer service a couple of months ago.

They took care of the issue and did so very quickly.

I'm sorry for your experience not being up to Spydercos normally outstanding level. I haunt forums all over and I can honestly say that for every one of these "dissatisfied"
threads, I read dozens of happy CS threads. No one being or entity is perfect, not even Sal. As far as "not trusting Sal or his CS" that is your choice but I believe it to be a classic mistake. Call CS, voice your questions and concerns civily an ask for satisfaction.
Email Sal directly, explain the situation and try to work it out. I am sure you will end up more than satisfied in the end. We are all human, we all make mistakes but the majority of us try to fix them and I believe Spyderco WILL fix the issues.

I have carried and used Spydercos since 1983, I use them hard and often trusted my life to them and have NEVER been let down.

And no, I do not work for them. I'm just happy with the product.

I remember your original thread. Would you mind posting a picture of the micro dyad that Sal hand selected for you?

I have been lucky not to have any of my spydies need a trip back to golden, which in itself is remarkable in that i own over 200 of them.

I have read reports of excellent service and a few of poor service. The one thing i have noticed is the folks in golden seem to get overwhealmed with work. This sometimes creates a delay in repairs and returning emails, etc.

Spyderco seems to be selling more knives than ever and with this increase in sales there is bound to be an increase in customer enquirys and complaints, perhaps its time Sal expands his Customer complaints/ Warranty dept.

This would increase the speed that Spyderco deals with customer enquirys and increase the speed and manner in which these warranty issues are resolved.

Just my 0.02c

Gene,
I don't think anybody in this forum would "slam" or "flame" you for posting your honest, recent experience with Spyderco's customer service/warranty & repair, and if they do, they'll have to flame me as well. Your experience sounds horrible and I would be plenty mad, too! I really hope this issue gets resolved to your complete satisfaction!

Regards,

Edited to add: Is it possible that the "dings" on the Micro-Dyad that Sal picked out were caused in transit?

I have broken two VG10 Caly Jr.'s and got a Delica 4 with excessive vertical play. Both the Caly Jr.'s they gave me a credit for and sent me a brand spankin' new Delica 4 that locks up like a vault after I sent them back. About a week and half turn around on all of them. Can't ask for better than that. Not a single question asked and all these instances were within the last year.

i bought a used civilian one time that needed new rubber handle inserts i explained this to spyderco cs sent it to them they found a problem with the lock it did meet their standards so it could not be fixed sal let me pick any knife i wanted as areplacement a full size wegner a brand new knife for a known previously owned knife! You cant beat that! Spyderco will make it right for you.

I sent a ZDP Caly Jr that I had an issue with to Golden .. and they sent me back somebody else's SE Police. They attempted to issue me with a paid-for return for the Police - but couldn't, so I had to pay to send it back. Do you know how heavy those things are ??!! :D

I accept that customer service hiccups can occur. I've had them with other knife companies too.

It didn't stop me buying another Spyderco - today I received an Atlantic Salt. :)

Recently I purchased a D4 with a buggered up spacer screw from the factory. I e-mailed CS and they sent me 5 torx screws on the double- quick.

there was a sprint run of the micro just released

Not getting new scales for the dyad seems understandable, it hasn't been around for a while. Screws should have been doable, I would guess someone could have looked them up or measured the remaining ones for comparison. The 'bad' parts would be not sharpening the knife and stripping out the clip holes.

Maybe there's a bad seed in the repair dept. I certainly wouldn't write off Spydie as a whole, but mngt may need to have a look at who's doing the repairs.

Don't give up on Spyderco. PM Sal here, email him, PM Tazkristi. Call them up on the phone and ask to speak to Sal.

Let me see if I have this straight.

  • You purchased a large Dyad used ten years ago.

  • The original owner had disassembled the knife, thereby voiding the warranty.

  • You wait ten years to inquire about new parts and are surprised when Spyderco does not have them.

  • You remove the clip, then assume that Spyderco, rather than you, stripped two of the screw holes.

  • You return the knife to Spyderco for service, even though you have already been made aware they do not have parts for it.

  • You insist on refering to "scale screws" when, in reality there are no "scale screws" on a large Dyad. There are blade pivot screws, lock bar pivot screws, and clip screws, that's it.

  • You refer to "dings" in the new Micro Dyad that you received, but offer no explaination as to where they are or what they look like, let alone a photo so we could judge for ourselves.
To me, the only potentially legitimate beef you have is that they forgot to sharpen the large Dyad. But, considering the rest of your "facts" I would need to see the letter that accompanied the knife before I'd give any credence to even that one. Perhaps you forgot to mention it. No flames, but no sympathy for your complaint either. :thumbdn:

I just received today (9/26) a Salsa PE I sent in on 9/1 (I was told it was logged in 9/5). I bought it new from an authorized Spydie retailer (although it is discontinued). The blade had a very 'gritty' opening action as if the washers or pivot were screwed up and the compression lock was so stiff I couldn't close it with my thumb.

I sent it in to see what could be done and now the blade opening is smooth as silk (lockup is solid in all directions with zero bladeplay) and the compression lock, while stiffer than on my other Salsas or my Para-Mil, can be closed one-handed with little effort.

Spyderco rocks (still).

Well done. I think this should be set as a standard. Every complaint I have ever read are described well by these points. Isn't it funny how every single one is like this?

On a side note, is sharpening a part of the warranty? Becuase if it is, Spyderco isn't oligated to sharpen his knife becuase the warranties are voided.

i don't think it is part of the warranty as much as it is a service that they offer to their customers for free or close to it. (the 5 bucks covers the shipping back)
