Spyderco starmate

Three crappy pics showing the three generations. Newest 2026 seems like a hybrid between the original and re-release from 2012ish(?). This sprint, when i saw it at Blade, wasn't that impressive. But in hand, I think the design works, better than the original. I really like the dual nested liners, old school proper liner lock. Grinds are good. I can't find anything wrong with it. Mine came in a pouch, no Spyderco box....Not sure if that's new for just Sprints?
Love it! Thanks for sharing

My Starmate just arrived. Slightly off-center, mushy detent, crooked/off-center Terzuola logo inlay, mysterious staining on the G10, lock-stick not insignificant (but seems to be breaking in ok).. Blade looks good with even grinds & bevels, if quite thick behind the edge. Functionally sharp out of the pouch, but not as "Spyderco sharp" as other models (my other recent Spyderco, the Edgerati is a laser beam in comparison). Action is good overall & lockup is solid. Comfortable neutral ergonomics - great Terzuola design.

It's not going to appeal to everybody. A (hefty) premium is being paid for the Terzuola name and manufacturing costs associated with a relatively small production run. To those that say $337 is lunacy.. yeah, I can't disagree. The price is steep for what this knife is, I have no real argument against that. Still, to my preferences, this is one of the most interesting Spyderco releases in a while. I've always loved Terzuola designs and the Starmate feels like revisiting a piece of history, which I enjoy. Call me crazy, a second Starmate is on its way..

My second Starmate arrived on Monday.. seems more well-put-together than my first.. perfect centering, no lock-stick, detent is better. My first one has broken-in nicely and the lock-stick disappeared after a couple days. Neither have what I would describe as a "crisp" detent, but I'm not a "fidgeter" and they are perfectly serviceable. Overall, quite pleased with this model. Has been a great user so far, glad to have a back-up..

The 2026 Sprint came in a pouch? Was there a tag attached? Please post a pic of that too if you can. Thx!

Correct, just a pouch, no box at all. Also, no plastic baggie. The stickers that would normally be on the boxes with all of the relevant model ID/info are attached to a little tag. As far as pouches go, these are pretty nice, but honestly, I think I'd prefer just a normal Spyderco box for my long-term storage purposes..

The included pouch probably drives the price up more than a box would. They should just sell the pouch separately.

I like the pouch, makes the whole presentation feel a little more scaled up for the price.

People are so fickle . . . there's a 20CV Sprint for sale for $330 on The Exchange already. LOL! ;)

It's cool, but I feel it's overpriced, even for a sprint they are really tugging on the collectors and Terzoula fans on this one. It's basically channeled a 1990s Benchmade 975 flat G10 peel ply handle, with an updated blade, great blade shape though.

I had once Starmate 440V, from this run I would expect better false edge grind, like in original and different steel than 20cv. 20cv is now everywhere, tired of it. I'm after details in such knives. Fact that some have uneven laser medallion logo, for this $$$ is not acceptable. Black painted screws, liners and clip in 2026 are kinda cheap looking for me. Why not some black coating with matte finish (like in Benchmade or Emerson) or just gray matte finish? Or just leave it silver. Original Starmate had gray matte finish on liner lock. I know it's sprint for demand and Spyderco delivered in form they've decided is acceptable for production.

You can see the report on my recent acquisition of the Starmate 20CV Sprint & how it compares with the other Starmates in my collection here.

Well.....Mine has developed some side to side blade play, with the knife open and lock disengaged. Since the pivot is loctited down, and the design has no built in tolerances, i'm going to have to send it in....
