Spyderco Stovepipe $420?????

This is out of my price range and the design is definitely not for me. That got me wondering. Who is this knife actually for?!?

Then I figured it out. It's for shadowy figures hanging out on the beach in frumpy dress clothes and a top hat. Don't know who I'm talking about? He's right there, inside the cover of Spyderco's Reveal 9 booklet. That's the guy. This knife is made for him!

I'm not going to knock Spyderco for playing in this price range. Some will decide to pay the freight on this, and others would rather have a Sebenza, SOCOM Elite, or something else.

What I do find humorous is how Spyderco sets an unrealistic "MSRP" so retailers can give their customers the illusion that they are getting a discount.

They've said that's by request from the dealers, for whatever that's worth.

Darn if that Stovepipe isn't even uglier than the Carribean Salt I recently bought!

Like the Slysz Bowie and the Techno and the SpydieChef, the Stovepipe has a frame that partially blocks the Spydie Hole. This baffles me, because the Spydie Hole is the main reason I buy Spydercos. I could see that maybe with a kitchen knife, finger flicking might not be as important as with a pocket knife, but still, it seems like a major design flaw to me.
They did that with the Swayback too, which stopped me from even trying to get one. I don't mind a slot-style blade hole, I don't mind and even prefer using the side of my index finger over the middle finger, but if it's a great greasy round hole and it's almost entirely blocked by the frame itself what am I supposed to do, spend money on it? No.

Not my thing. That being said Spyderco isn't really known for price gouging. I'm sure it's expensive because production costs are high and volumes are low.
Lol yeah that's why a decent quality titanium framelock commands a price of four hundred dollars.

It's a business error on their part. If it really can't go to market for less, they need to examine their operations or maybe personal finances to figure out why. I would never buy one of these over any Peña X-Series, or any other comparably priced Reate, even the ones I don't like. If it were competitive with other framelocks, you know with a retail price of at most $225 given what we're looking at, I would be interested in trying one out someday. Not enough to go on a ramen diet or sell any of my current collection, but if I had a great year and couldn't think of any other gear I need or want, I would consider one.

The low hollow grind isn't what I like to see either. That severe grind with a towering expanse of flat stock above it doesn't make sense in a pocket knife to me. Maybe for a big chopper that needs the mass more than I need nice geometry, but not for a regular carry knife. Look at Kizer's M_Stealth for a perfect hollow grind. It's high and good looking and doesn't leave the blade at full thickness for the bulk of it's face. I did buy one of those despite questioning the aesthetics for a long time before I finally took the leap. It's a new favorite and won't be leaving the collection.

As a guy who recently started wearing a Kizer Butcher as his daily driver, I promise it's not cleaver aesthetics that put me off, but damn guys that design is screaming for either a high hollow grind or a lot of material removed from the spine side of the blade to make it more of a sheepsfoot.

Is that the mini- cleaver? I have no doubt that it has Spyderco quality but have always wondered what the function of a mini- cleaver is? That said I really like the Spyderco framelocks in general.

MSRP is the ACTUAL price Spyderco charges at the company store. Sal's explained he charges that price so as not to undercut his dealers. I'd bet there's several customers that buy direct from Golden and pay the MSRP.

The reasons make sense. Spyderco does not want to compete with their dealer network. And I'm sure Spyderco does not begrudge anyone who pays them the inflated ACTUAL price that only they charge. I just find it a bit disingenuous for the retailers who's price is fixed by Spyderco (at least if they want to continue being authorized dealers) to use the real MSRP as some kind of discounted price.

I can understand not wanting to sell a 250 knife that then sells out and people buy them for 450 from flippers.

But..trying to price something right out the gate at flipper prices is not how the market works

Or maybe it will work and they are geniuses

I like the knife. I do. But with the knives I already have that it would be competing for pocket time against, I just can't do that price.

This is almost a carbon copy of the Spyderco Bombshell thread.

Try to find one today

The Bombshell was pricey but an excellent knife, it was a flash batch, and if I'm not mistaken it wasn't $600 either.

The Bombshell was one people wanted as a regular production, price complaints aside. That's why they are impossible to get now. This knife doesn't have any of the same things going for it aside from Taichung production.

So, the Bombshell and McBee are having a baby? Congratulations, Spyderco! Lol!
Guys, good points here and I see where y'all are coming from. Here's where I'm coming from;
Expect to see more of this stuff coming to the market. I have a hunch the knife market is rapidly expanding in the direction of the "everyday tactical" crowd and whoever dangles the goods in front of the consumer first, is going to get the sales. I just believe that's what kind of market we're in. I mean, just look at how many knives there are out there that can fall in this category, price notwithstanding. This emerging everyday tactical crowd, does not care about the price. They buy whatever they like, sometimes the more expensive it is, the better they like it. I know, some of you are saying there's better knives for less money, but how many of those are in stock and available? I believe the knives will sell during preorder and if/when they drop. If they don't, I'm sure Spyderco did the math and chose the correct number of units to bring to market as to not lose their butts, which is probably where the preorder fits in.
Continue to make it known to Spyderco what you desire, they are so big and capable of so much, a company like that can absolutely go off the rails trying to guess what the consumer wants, they need feedback from you!
