Spyderco Stretch

The Stretch is an intersting design study.

We spent many months refining and "perfecting" the pattern. As an all around EDC cutting tool, it seemed to me to have all of the necessary ingredients for the "afi" that wanted to carry a 4" knife. but found modern society didn't like such "big knives". 3" was a tad small so 3.5" seemed like a good compromise.

Efficient blade shape capable of performing a multitude of cutting tasks effectively, comfortable ergos for most hand sizes, Good steel, wide full flat grind, finger choil for close cutting, thin enough to carry and not know it's there, 4 way dedicated clip.

Assuming the design is sound  then SS and Kraton are not desired?

Because the design failed in the marketplace.

The next version (same pattern) is ZDP-189, peel ply carbon fiber scales, full SS liners, mid lock-back, a little thicker, a little lighter.

We haven't yet decided if it will be a sprint, test or ? We know that we're going to make at least one run.

I like the original so I know I'm gonna like the new one. Now if I could just get you to run off a couple carbon fiber Para Militarys with BG-42 blades. :)

Maybe I'm mistaken (Was it concernig CF Caly3? Or something else?) but haven't you said something about more glossy CF on Stretch? Like something between peel-ply and shiny CF?
Peel-ply (as present on CF Military) is fine, but sometimes (getting in and out of pocket) maybe too much grippy.
I don't encounter much situations with EDC folder where I would gain by peel-ply grip (such as wet or oily hands).

Also although it may not be completly "form follows function" principle, shinier CF looks better and may attract more people

Also if I may ask, is CF driving price up a lot (compared to say G-10)?
I mean, what about producing some model(s) (apart from T-Mag), e.g. aformentioned Stretch, with CF as a default?

(and produce a sprint run(runs? :)) of that models as a pimped out versions, like ZDP-189, more attractive scales (differently colored CF, or e.g. CF scales with bolsters, if you want go wild Damascus/Mokume bolsters and exotic wood), Titanium liners, etc.?)

cant agree more:)

SS is fine, as long as the inserts are a solid material (G10, Micarta, whatever) I love the design though

yeah, i bet it's the looks that 'killed' it Sal.

@Cornelis: Millie my fave? ermm...aaah, yeah i remember now, thanks! ;)

Sounds perfect, can't wait

Sal - For me, the reason I did not get a stretch is that, for slightly more money, I could get more with the Para: Better blade steel, better handle materials (my perception), and lighter.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the design of the Stretch, but when the decision time came, I chose the Para for those reasons. I don't regret it at all, the Para is one of my favorite knives.

If the Stretch were available in comparable materials, I might be induced to bite. That is, if the CF BG-42 Military doesn't claim my knife budget first....

I can't speak for anyone else, but that is exactly the case with me. I live 176 miles from the nearest knife shop where I can handle knives before I buy them. I long ago got tired of blowing a hundred bucks a pop on knives that I ended up not liking when I got them. A hundred dollars may be pocket change to some people, but I am not one of them. If I see a single feature that I don't like, I won't buy it.

As I said before, every Kraton handled knife I have carried for more than a week has developed problems. My skin also dissolves gold at a truly amazing rate  . So there is no way I am going to blow a C note on a knife with Kraton on the handle, even as an insert. Maybe your Kraton would be different than all the rest, but I am not going to spend my hard earned money to find out.

I AM looking forward to trying this knife with a different handle material, assuming you don't jack the price clear out of my reach :D

couldn't have said it any single word better than you just did Yabla, major kudos to you

I've had my eye on the Stretch. Sorry to hear it hasn't sold well for you Sal. I think my reasons for not buying one yet was the apperance of the black material inlayed in the SS. Something about that look remind me of cheap junky knives if I'm being honest and maybe why I haven't picked one up yet. Switching to carbon fiber, or G-10, with full SS liners maybe the trick to give it a more crowd pleasing appearence. ZDP-189 and carbon fiber handles will make it a knife I'll have to have. Other than the looks, I really like what I see in the design.

If you have a bunch of Stretches that haven't had the kraton inlays put in them yet could you make some limited editions with wood inlays, or other exotic materials? That would be fun. :)

The Stretch is one of my favorite Spydie users. It may be a bit fugly to some, but it is super functional. My only minor gripe is that 3 of the 5 that I own as NIB had a bit too much lateral blade play for my liking. I'm sure there's a tradeoff between the super slim design and the ability to stabilize the blade. The Kraton on my user Stretch has held up well and shows no real signs of wear.

Here's the family.

There is lateral blade play, like on many more SS Spydies. But it's nevertheless my favorite user ( next to the RAT folder ).

As I'm carrying my Stretch right now, seeing this thread immediately caught my eye.

The Stretch is a folder that has to be held to be appreciated. I thought it was a tad expensive when I first saw it, but, asked to see it anyway. When my hand gripped it, it drew an immediate "Sold!" response from me. The full height flat grind, four way solid clip and VG-10 blade were all plus's. It was the way my hand locked onto the handle that got me though.

I'm looking forward to a newer version of this great design.

Love the size and shape of the Stretch but the Kraton insert was a deal breaker for me as well - the Kraton cheapens the look of the knife, imho. Since they are being discontinued I may go ahead and pick one up and put some thin micarta scales on it.

Sal, some of my favorite Spyders include the C03 (P/S) Hunter and C05G (P/S) Standard. I liked the hunter more than the pro grip because I did not much care for the Kraton inlays. I like the Standard better than the Delica because of the G10.

I love almost everything about the Stretch, except the inlays, and have one saved for some day when I can get some G10, CF or Micarta slabs put on it.

If you came out with a peeled CF version of the Stretch, I would be all over it!

Will the peel ply CF be an insert like the Kraton or will the entire handle be CF?

The next version sounds sweet.
