Spyderco Stretch

Hi Cornelis,

I guess I figured to put an exceptional steel on the model with exceptional handle materials. This one I'm making to please me. :p

If for some reason it doesn't survive many runs, I'll have a few stashed for me.

The ZDP adds a few dollars, that I think will be worth it. Have you used ZDP yet. I've not found it hard to sharpen.

Sal -
Does your company have a way of letting us know when the new version will come out, so we can get one before they are gone? :) I would sure like to be on the list.
Dave.

I had a stretch, and really like the knife, but thought the handles were kinda thin. It is still one fine knife, and I would like to have another.

ZDP is easy to sharpen as long as the edge bevel is nice and acute, like you make them, Sal. Touch ups on the Sharpmaker are quick and easy. Reprofiling it is another story, but still very doable.

Hi Sal,

To be honest, I have not used ZDP yet, but read about it on your forum.
If there will be only one run, please reserve one for me. I'm a "Stretch fan".

Cor.

Sal,

What does the timing look like for the Stretch sprint? I don't want to miss this one.

Not to beat a dead horse, but it was the kraton that killed the deal for me as well. In every other way, I really liked the Stretch and would have bought one if not for that one thing. I once had a SOG with kraton handles, and the sticky black mess they turned into just totally turned me off for good. It just seems that a premium knife should never EVER have kraton, or even be allowed in the same room with kraton.

Usually, the first place a new model is brought up is on the forums. We'll make an announcement to our distribution channels as well.

You can always pre-order one from your dealer.

I expect the production run to be another 4 - 6 months. We'll have a sample at SHOT. ZDP has a very long lead time for steel. Somethines 9 - 12 months from Hitachi. We have a number of models using ZDP so steel lead time might be less in the future.

Mike,

I reprofiled my D4 ZDP with diamonds. wasn't bad. very thin ede. Holding up well.

Razzierb, Cor,

We're not yet sure it will be a sprint. It may go more than one run. The cost is high so volume will be affected. If the ELU's want them, we'll make them.

Hi Torz,

yup, lesson learned.

I reprofiled my Jess horn ZDP flat to the stone with your diamond sharpmaker rods in the back of the base. It ended up around 8 degrees per side, and mostly flat ground instead of hollow. It performs great. That experience led me to buy a DMT X coarse, which reprofiles much faster than your rods, but then again I don't think you had the kind of reprofiling I did in mind when you designed the diamond sharpmaker rods. For normal reprofiling down to 30 degrees inclusive the rods work great, and I'm impressed with thier longevity.

What about producing the ZDP runs with (edge) angle lower than usual (say 20-25 degress inclusive)? Many (most?) people who will buy the knife because of the steel will be willing to reprofile it to low angle anyway, so why don't make it right (use abilites of ZDP steel) directly from the factory?

And we will get easy sharpening as a side effect :)

Hi Huugh,

Not everyone wants a thin edge. I think mostly the steel, junky's. Probably a smaller number than we think.

My friend, Judd Evans, a metal artist and knife maker, created a thicker edge. He uses a knife hard.

I think shooting for something like 26-28 degrees inclusive would be great. That way, even allowing for variances in the factory hand sharpening, it would touch up easily at 30 degrees on the Sharpmaker.

Many of my Spydercos (R2, Native, and Manix) came to me under 15 degrees per side, and touch up easily on the 15 degree setting.

From what I understand, Spyder shoots for 30 degrees at the factory on many/most knives. Because they are hand sharpened, there can/will be a few degrees variation either way.

What this means, in my experience, is that it's a crap shoot whether a particular knife will touch up easily at 30 degrees on the Sharpmaker, or not.

Lowering the target to 26-28 degrees would make many/most touch up easily at 30 degrees.

The Stretch is an intersting design study.

The next version (same pattern) is ZDP-189, peel ply carbon fiber scales, full SS liners, mid lock-back, a little thicker, a little lighter.

We haven't yet decided if it will be a sprint, test or ? We know that we're going to make at least one run.

sal

Well, I'll buy one of these. It'll be my 3rd (mini & reg Persian) Spydie. I like the way it looks and the versitility of it. Yeah, Ill get one.

And I like WadeF's comment. "If you have a bunch of Stretches that haven't had the kraton inlays put in them yet could you make some limited editions with wood inlays, or other exotic materials? That would be fun." I'd go for one of those too.

Sal, I'm with Torz also. I imagine I would have one also if it were not for the Kraton, the SS is not a problem, in fact I prefer it. The size, VG-10, tip up, blade length, flat grind, even the hole seems perfect. But if I got one in it's current rendition, I'd have to replace the Kraton with something else in short order probably black Micarta or a nice wood inlay. (I still may have to do this eventually.....:D )

I had a CE one and it locked up better than most Spydercos I have had. It was a nice knife that I wish I had kept. I just never used it, ever. I have too many knives and if one doesn't get used, I end up trading it for something I want more.

The main reasons I didn't carry or use it when I had it were, it was a tad haevy due to the SS handle. It was also a bit slippery again due to the SS. It was hard to get in or out of the pocket due to how grippy the Kraton was.

I was very impressed with the overall feel of quality of this knife however and I think I will try one of these new ones Sal says is comming out. It is probably in my top ten of favorite Spydercos. Maybe top 15, there are a lot of good ones to choose from.

I'm currently carrying the Stretch2 as an EDC. Peel ply carbon fiber handle full flat ZDP. Full SS liners, 4 way E4/D4 hourglass clip, screw construction. It's about 2mm thicker. Currently about the same weight as the first one. (I think I can take a few grams out in the future). Handle is about 3mm longer.
