The quicky version then :P

In china the average worker is paid 2$ an hour which is like holy cow low wage in the united states, one must understand though that that 2$ is like someone who is just below the poverty line in the united states, I wanted that to be clear so that people where not over exagerating the lack of money that these people are making. This is called the "Purchasing Power Parity" or PPP, SO basicly in China 1 US dollar will buy 20$ worth of goods make sense?

Ok next point that the OP expresses is the question are these workers being exploited. To this end one must examine the percent of workers that fall into extream poverty, as of 2005 this wuld be just around 46% so roughly speaking half. Next we take and compare the percentage of workers in China that work for a Multi National Company or MNC, accoring to the United States Congresional record as of 2005 that would be around 60-70% of the poplulation. Taking this into Consideration it is presumable that roughly Half the industrial workers in China are in Poverty due to their wage rate by working for a MNC.

Next we compare the idea tha these products are being manufactured cheaply in China this is both yes and no. As stated the Average % proffit margin according to the US Congresional Record is anywhere between 11% and 70 profit towards the company. For compersion sake, Products made in the USA average around 4-6% profit margin. So to wrap it up, by purchasing goods that are manufactured in china without knowing the profit margin thatis being kicked back to he MNC it is possble that you are in fact re-enforcing the status quo as a consumer. Where as by buying knives made in the USA under the princaples of free market economy you as a consumer are demanding one of three things, firstly that MNC pay a fair wage based upon their profit margin similar to the USA standard, or that the MNC continue its un-ethical buisness practices and go out of buiness due to lack of consumer support, but thats in a perfect world where every consumer is an informed buyer.

If I missed your question feel free to ask me specificly what you want to knwo mroe about and ill attempt to answer it, but for now I have to go to class :P have to go win a debate.

That actually helped a lot. Thanks for putting it into less technical terms.

I'm not being sarcastic either. Seriously, I definitely understand better what you were saying.

And don't call me Nancy.

LOL! Yeah! It's Barbara, and don't you forget it!

Just playin. :D

There is a HUGE market in the US for inexpensive goods. Most people like to get a bargain on things that will get the job done and spend their big bucks on things that require the outlay of cash. I have no problem with buying products made or assembled in foreign countries. The people there are just as deserving of a job as we are. At least China is becoming more capitalistic, which is more than I can say for the US. There is absolutely nothing inherently better about a product made in the US. It's all about quality control and company standards. I continue to buy Craftsman tools because they are high-quality products. I have tried enough Chinese cast tools to know they are trash at any price. Finances drive businesses. If there is no financial benefit to keeping production in country, production will be outsourced. It's actually a very simple concept. It's not an us vs. them or good vs. bad. It's just the way the world functions.

I'm not sure he is a troll. I think he's just fairly new to forum and doesn't really know where to post his thoughts. But then again, that's what all those rules and stickies are for. If one was truly smart, they would read and attain all the knowledge they would need in order to post responsibly.

I've always read your posts and have respect for your opinion. With that in mind, I'm going to hold off on the Troll title until/if it is proven to be true. Just seems like a lot of controversy being stirred up, and after the topic has been beaten to death in the past.:)

This thread is closed.

The topic is not the knife, it is the socio-economic questions raised by outsourcing. The General Knife Discussion forum is for discussing knives. The rest belongs in the Political Arena.

I am not going to dump a discussion well under way, complete with non-political material, into the Political Arena. Only paid members can post there anyway.

Bladeforums provides a restricted (quarantined) area for political discussions exactly for this reason: to prevent this kind of dissension in our knife discussion forums.
