Has anyone sent a knife that broke back to Spyderco?

What was your experience?

Did they fix it or replace it?

I sent my Military in for sharpening along with a note to inspect the detent ball in the liner lock because it looked like it had flattened. There was no blade retention in the knife unless I crank down on the pivot making it harder to open and close. I got my knife back factory razor sharp with a note that said something like they repaired the knife as best as possible, thank you, happy to see your using your knife.
I was extremely happy with the edge put on it but the detent was the same. I would be more than happy to pay for any repair but according to the letter there was nothing that could be done. I'm not completely satisfied with the warranty service I recieved on a knife I used for 4 months and have not carried the knife since because I feel like I have a defective knife.
Don't get me wrong, I love Spyderco knives and as a company but I've searched on their forums for every thread about the liner lock and detent on the Military and did not find that it was a common thing to happen so the whole deal has left me scratching my head.

Never used the warranty. Shipping from Canada can potentially equal the cost of a Delica.
I take what I get, I am my own warranty department (regardless of brand).

I have used Spyderco's warranty service for a production defect and the experience exceeded my expectations.

I'm a big fan of spydercos knives. Hell, I even chose my screen name because of them. I've heard all kinds of good things about their warranty , but can't say that I've had the good experience everyone boasts about. I asked for a screw that was missing from a brand new mini-manix I bought that had a missing screw. They said no problem and sent me 4 screws, none of which were the right one for the knife.
Another time I had bought a military in s90v, it's not in the same price range as a sebenza, but still a fairly expensive production folder IMO and I expected the knife to reflect that. The lock up was garbage, the lockbar traveled almost all the way over the first time I opened it. Having a few other millies, I knew this was far from the norm. I sent the knife in after emailing them, they sent it back having done absolutely nothing to the knife. What irked me the most is that they told me that they had in fact fixed it, and it was now perfectly fine. I'm not an idiot, it was not hard to tell they did nothing to it.

I guess their warranty repairs are hit & miss, unfortunately both misses in the two cases where I attempted to use it. I will say their customer service is good. I always got quick and very friendly replies to my inquiries. I'm still a big fan of their designs, and still own a humble little collection, but haven't bought many knives from them since the millie thing.

you wanna get rid of the military?

I like spyderco knives but hate their warranty. If you break it while using it, good luck getting it fixed. If it breaks on you while using it, you might get it fixed. There is little disparity between those two and it will be the same when dealing with CS. Spyderco's warranty excludes everything except defects and it's up to their CS to determine that. Most other companies will fix it without question OR a fee.

I had 3 warranty issues with Spyderco knives and they were taken care of with speed and no fuss. The issues were: broken lock back, loose rivet, and lost bushing. First two knives were replaced for free and they sent me bushings free of charge even though it was my fault. I paid shipping to them and they sent back my $5 checks in both cases.

I bought a Rookie that had a defect in the lock area of the blade. They sent a replacement in 3 weeks.
Seems like good service to me.
The knife had never been used.

I lost a screw off my Police model while deployed to Iraq in 2005 and e-mailed Spyderco asking for a replacement. They did send me some screws free of charge but I finally got them 2 months later just before leaving back for the states. Another time I bent the clip on my 1st gen Millitary and purchased a replacement from Spyderco. Got it in a week but the shipping was twice what the replacement clip cost. I have never sent them anything for actual warrently work but it does seem a little hit and miss customer service wise comparred to Buck or Strider, both of which had excellent customer and warrently service.

Define "broke."

Indeed Josh, this needs to be clarfied a bit. If someone uses their knife as a prybar, hammer, anvil, axe, chisel, etc. then the expectation for a freebie is limited at best. I would not expect a new knife based on misuse.

I sent in a manix 2 with a really crooked blade (hitting the liner) and they sharpened, cleaned, and tuned up the knife. It came back exactly 1 week later in great shape, same knife, straight blade, I was very happy.

I also sent in a para that the comp lock would not even engage 10% of the blade (scary), and they did replace that. Not sure why they would not have tried to either grind the lo0ck bar down or the tang catch itself...

I guess if you have some reasonable expectations of service with a genuine defect, you will be given great service.

While in Iraq, I carried a ChinookIII. The lock kept failing so I hung it up for a few months. After I came home, I purchased a P'kal and I don't remember what was wrong with it but I think it was something minor. I sent both knives back and got brand new ones in about a two week time span. Oh and btw, while deployed I bent the pocket clip when it got caught on something and needed a new one. My dad called for me and they sent a new clip as well as a 20 min. phone card for free. I love spyderco and own at least 6 different modles. I even own 2 sharpmaker sets and will be buying the ultra fine rods soon. I will continue to add to my spyderco collection and look forward to seeing new products.

Uh do you expect a company to give you a new item when you break it. How many car manufacturers will give you a new car when you brake it? Or how many new cellphones did you get because your dropped yours on concrete?

Most other companies will fix it without question? What company's? The ones that charge double on every knife to every customer to be able to give half of their users a full warranty back?

Warranty is for manufaturing defects, not because you decided to use your knife for a task it was not designed for.

I see people complaining because their folder broke when they tried to cut a car door in half, or split a firelog. That's like a helicopterpilot who wants his money back because the thing broke when he flew it upside down or underwater....

Yeah, most warranties have limitations...typically the fewer limitations the more you pay for the warranty.

Spyderco, as far as I can tell, spells out their limitations pretty clearly, and presumably charges accordingly. If you want some sort of free replacement policy, you can probably get one if you purchase insurance on the outside (I hear Lloyd's of London will customize a policy to nearly any desire). That may sound stupid, but how is breaking a knife blade much different from denting a car door?

If you purchase something (anything) and do not familiarize yourself with the limitations of the warranty, you really have no basis for complaint. I see this all too frequently in the retail world...I will spare you the crazy examples.

How many other companies offer to repair their own products? How many do it at a charge? Spyderco is one of many. Warranty and Customer Service include repairing knives. (AND AT A FEE) Who said I'm talking about replacing knives? Or who even mentioned abusing knives? A knife I bought had a crooked blade. I sent it in, had to pay a fee, and it came back in worse condition. And I get blamed because I paid my money for a service that wasn't rendered properly? Spyderco is lucky they still get my money every once in a while, like I said before, because they make nice knives. But if anything ever goes wrong with mine, might as well chuck em because it's all up to how much CS likes you.

IMO Spyderco's warranty is on par with Cold Steel. Their knives are made better and you won't need it as much, but if you do... good luck

Like I said before, I haven't had these problems with other companies, and no they don't charge double, most of them are same price or cheaper.

I have a black Pacific Salt that has way too much side to side blade movement and a little up and down. If I send it in, do you think they would replace it?

Here's a little blurb on the #1 Customer Service company for 2010, according to Businessweek, L. L. Bean:
