Spyderco's Bushcraft in 2009 Catalog

You're in custom knife pricing at just under $200 bills.

You're at twice the price of some custom makers at $200.

I'm sure it's a nice knife, I don't know that it will do anything my $70 JK Budget Hunter won't do.

I like the scandi grinds, but it is not worth the extra $100 to me. My Mora's work great.

I think Spyderco will be pricing themselves out of a lot of sales. They are price competitive in all other categories except this one it seems. Sure some hardcore Spydie fans and some bushwhackers who think it is "the one" will buy it, but I bet at a lower price they'd sell a lot more. I don't work for R&D at Spyderco and I have no idea what their markup is on this item, all I can say is I won't be buying one unless it's in the $150 range. 50% of MSRP isn't unheard of from Spyderco (their MSRP's are ALWAYS high), I guess we'll wait and see.

That's a bit pricier than I expected, but not by a whole lot. Was thinking around 150 street price. Looks like a great knife, I hope I can pick one up eventually.

MSRP is $299.95

Owwwwwwwwwwchhhhhhhh!

I have to agree there. I love my Spyderco's and I love the looks of this knife, too. But, I can get a really, really nice custom exactly the way I want it here for that, and often times, less than that. I do hope to see them succeed however. It really is a good looking piece.

The scandi grind is about the only thing that can put it at that price point, there aren't many makers here that do them.

At that price I think it may put me out of the running, unless the handle is just unbelievable. There really are just too many makers that put out awesome work below that point, you could have duplicate full customs for that price tag. But again, probably not a scandi.

All just theory for now though, so we'll see! I do love the looks and love the grind. And steel.

Looks good, but I'm going to have to give a :thumbdn: for the O1. That stuff is a rust magnet. I'd much rather have VG10 or S90v or something of that nature.

tis a fine looking blade boys but that msrp is crazy. $299.95? so lets say they sell it for $250 + shipping at most retailers? jesus thats pricey. i'm not knocking spyderco, they make great knives but like many have said here the price will turn people away from it if they arent spyderco collectors or people who think its the one. sure its cheaper then the ray mears knife at 500 bux but still. i would probably pick up a bark river aurora or fox river for half that msrp and be just as happy.

You jest surely ? O1 is great steel, it does require a little care and will develop a nice patina in time ,I'd take it any day over a stainless steel !!!;)

Dont get me wrong, I love the way it performs. I'd just rather have a steel that is equal in performance but more rust resistant. I've got several O1 knives and if I blink too slow its starts to form. On the other hand, I can be a little more complacent with my 3v bushcrafter or say a fallkniven and still be just as happy with the performance.

As I'm sure you know, living by the beach isn't conducive to low maintenance with knives.... and firearms.... and cars.... and tools... and... well you get the idea.

The target market wants a tool steel though.

Spyderco has several great fixed blades that are completely rust proof.
This is a great no nonsense design that should do everything the knife in question can.: http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=295

the Jumpmaster might also be great for ya as it is also rust proof.

I could have been interested at a lower price, but what's the point in a production knife if it is as expensive as a custom.

Yeah, I was kinda under the impression when this knife first appeared on the radar that the street price was gonna be in the $70-80 range, which I was totally pumped for.

But $200? I love Spyderco, but not THAT much.

It's too bad though. I think there is a real market over here in the states for a production full-tang scandi design, made out of some solid tool steel, sold at a low price. Oh well.

Eh - it looks ok. I'm not a huge fan and don't like that hole in the blade. I'll probably catch some heat for not liking it, but I'm not on the Spyderco train. I've owned a Spyderco in the past and it was a great knife and held up well, but I just don't like the knife as a whole. I hope that makes sense, it does to me.

Also, for that price I would much rather buy a custom from one of the makers here on the board. I enjoy supporting the "little guy" and also having a knife that isn't mass produced.

Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth...

At $200 you are 25% more than a Bark River Aurora or a Koster Bushcraft in 3V...Seems very high for a made in Taiwan.

Wow, their gonna bite on this one......

Like everyone else, I can see Ol'Koster getting some future customers when they see the price and manufacturing area.

Essh spyderco.

Here is what you do. Put some elbow grease and polish up the blade through a series of grits to about 800 grit, removing all the bigger scratches. Then force a patina on it with vinegar or mustard. You won't run into rust problems after that. What little bits of corrosion sets on the edge will be worn off with use. Oh yeah - use the knife. That helps.

I was looking forward to this one. Not anymore however. Unfortunate choice on the price. Whoops? I think I'll stick with an Enzo.

You can usually get a Spyderco online for around 30% to 35% less than MSRP. That still puts it around $190 for a Tiawanese produced knife. I'm a huge Spydie fan, but I'll be passing on this one. Few new things in the 2009 catalog that I will be checking out though.
