Spyderco's Bushcraft in 2009 Catalog

Priced way to high on this one I agree. I will get at least two nice custom bushcrafting type blades for that money from custom makers. Like the stype and overall look, price is a killer for me.

I was looking forward to this too. :( I will go to about $150, and that is it. I will go custom over that price.

I was looking forward to this one but at the price quoted it is to high. However i paid 80$ for a used Streetbeat so there is a very good chance to pick one up second hand or in trade. Also for that price it should come with one hell of a good sheath.

I know there are plans for a stainless ,synthetic handled version for those who don't want the rust issues of O1. Not an issue for me but I live in Saskatchewan.

The hole is simply a brand logo I rather like. It was first used on the Mules I believe.

I have the 52100 and M4 Mules which are awesome. One thing you can count on with Spyderco is good edge geometry so even if it is 3/16 it will cut and slice with the best of them. It will also bring the bushcraft style knife to the mainstream which I have mixxed feelings about.

Lets see...

9" of O-1 steel = $4.50

Maple burl scales = $30 at most, for nice burl. For what they've got probably more like $5 to $10.

Taiwan labor = Cheap.

Plus they are probably stamped out in an automated process, which allows them to produce a lot.

The prices for them would probably be even cheaper because they are likely buying from the source and are getting bulk prices.

At $60 to $80 it would be a GREAT knife! Finally something the average Joe could pic up at there local store. But unfortunately they are pricing themselves above even very nice customs. Even $130 would be way too much...

Too bad. They really screwed up with the MSRP.

I would be interested in seeing Sal's explanation on this one. He usually has a way of making muddy waters a bit more transparent.

Interested when i heard about it. Now that i know the MSRP, not in anyway interested.

It costs more than the Custom Puukko being made for me by a maker in Finland(Puukkos in FINLAND?!)

the made in taiwan thing is the main downside for me. it is annoying to see a well designed blade with a taiwan stamp in it.

Spyderco is known for having very fair pricing. We don't even know for sure what these are going to be priced at.

i already posted that i like it, but damn that price will kill me. Convert it to CDN $$$ add shipping costs and Duties and you got a $400 blade.

and its not a $400 blade.

I recently got some replacement screws from them and they sent an '09 catalog and pricing guide. The pricing guide does indeed confirm the $299.99 MSRP.

Let’s see if I can help. I’m not Sal, but for those of you, who don’t know me, I handle Government Sales for Spyderco and I’m our site Admin.

The FB26 is a custom quality Bushcraft knife, designed by a Buschcrafter for other Bushcrafters. It meets exacting standards based on Chris Claycomb’s input as well as input and feedback from members at bushcraftuk.com.

This first Bushcraft model features Maple Burl scales. It is U.S. wood that has been stabilized here in the U.S. and then shipped to Taiwan. The handle is formed to provide comfortable carry in-hand. Our attention to detail and ergonomics was not compromised in any way.

Spyderco works off of very tight, small margins. We don’t price anything at what we think the market will bear, we price things realistically based on what it costs to make the model.

Sal hand-picks the factories that we work with, he chooses them based upon their ability, their talent and their attention to detail. We create long term, deep relationships with them, we expect a lot from them. Perhaps the labor costs in Taiwan are lower in other industries or even lower in other knife factories. However, in our case, labor costs there are only about 25% lower than what they are here.

Nice design but not at that price.
Hopefully the street price will be more realistic.
Any word on possible street price in the Spyderco forums?

Kristi, first, thanks for taking the time to comment on this. It truly is nice to have a representative from the company willing to do that! I would submit one point though. If the labor cost savings is not what you would consider to be significant, it probably would have been worth it to go ahead and have them US made and recoup the costs with the probability of a higher number of sales with that PR angle, no?

ejes,
Thank you, I'm happy to do it.

Potentially yes, but we also have to consider the capacity of the factory. Right now, it's not within our capacity to make the Bushcraft here.

Looks an awful lot like Koster's Bushcraft, which I already have, with a sheath, and firesteel.

That said, thanks for the link to the catalog for the pictures. I think I now have about $500 worth of more steel to put on the "I want this" list. :grumpy:

I think I also found the cherry to put on the top of my wife's Christmas present if I can find one for sale. The purple lady bug should do swell. :D
