Spyderco's Bushcraft in 2009 Catalog

psy-ops

Ya can't get more high tech than H1. :) Ironically, if they had made this model as you wished "VG10, flat ground, 3/16th thick blade and orange zytel handle plus a kydex" this thread would be negative about it not being in tool steel and natural woods instead taiwanese/price. ;)

So I played with one of my h1's on a few stones and maybe a electric operated item (:)), and I really am taking a liking to this stuff. If you have a chance to use it, try it out! I want to see what other people think of that steel after some real hand on, on a stone or other sharpening method.

Let’s see if I can help. I’m not Sal, but for those of you, who don’t know me, I handle Government Sales for Spyderco and I’m our site Admin.

The FB26 is a custom quality Bushcraft knife, designed by a Buschcrafter for other Bushcrafters. It meets exacting standards based on Chris Claycomb’s input as well as input and feedback from members at bushcraftuk.com.

This first Bushcraft model features Maple Burl scales. It is U.S. wood that has been stabilized here in the U.S. and then shipped to Taiwan. The handle is formed to provide comfortable carry in-hand. Our attention to detail and ergonomics was not compromised in any way.

Spyderco works off of very tight, small margins. We don’t price anything at what we think the market will bear, we price things realistically based on what it costs to make the model.

Sal hand-picks the factories that we work with, he chooses them based upon their ability, their talent and their attention to detail. We create long term, deep relationships with them, we expect a lot from them. Perhaps the labor costs in Taiwan are lower in other industries or even lower in other knife factories. However, in our case, labor costs there are only about 25% lower than what they are here.

Then why not make them HERE in the USA for that steep a price:confused: No, 'Buy Local' on this type and get the same, or superior quality from Koster, Gossman, etc.

And just so Spyderco is clear on the 'style', the hole in the blade is placed ABOVE THE POINT OF THE BLADE so as to facilitate repeated cutting of the same material through use of a pin, in a shearing motion, hence the name 'shear hole';) on Bushcraft 'style' knives.

Found another pic of the Spydie Bushcraft knife... looks nice. I may have to pic one of these up...

I think it looks really good, I'm just interested to see what price tag it brings. What's y'alls guess? I'm thinking near $200?

I have a Randall Model 14 in O-1 that cost me $230(ten years ago)... $200 would be a little steep for that Spydie knife.

When you price a Model 14 in today's dollars, $200 for that Spyderco is not out of line. We are a relatively small group of people on these forums and the larger market will buy these without knowing what we know about the custom makers that have similar models for a few bucks less. I think that Spyderco does a great job at bringing good knives to market and staying in business at all for that matter in this economy.

None yet. Promise I'll post when I have more info on an ETA (and on the sheath). Sal and I will both be traveling, so it'll be a little while. Hang in there.

You can't compare customs to production pieces really, lets be honest. Right not we are in an unusual knife period...there have been LOTS of guys start to make knives, everyone is trying to make and sell a knife these days(hey, I am one of them) so what you have is a huge competion amongst small makers. The big names will always be the big names and command high prices for their work and so they should. This knifemaking is an art, anyone can do it, but not everyone can do it well. Guys like Koster and Gossman are giving their stuff away in here somedays as are a lot of guys doing amazing work for the price. You can pick up a really nice custom for peanuts these days.
Bringing this to productions....why do most guys not even bat an eye at the prices of CRK, Strider or Busse knives but when Spyderco puts out what will be an amazing piece they say it is too expensive??? CRK and Busse are using toolsteels and charging a lot for their knives( I am in NO way saying they are not worth it, I have a Game Warden on my belt right now and have a Project 1 in my B.O.B.)
I think what the problem is for most here with the price is "bushcraft" knives are the buzz knife right now and many guys including myself are making them. I am only a hobby maker, I don't need to make money on selling a knife, I cover my costs and I enjoy what I am doing so I don't need to make the mortgage with my knife sales....there are a lot of guys making knives like I am right now, full time jobs, full time family commitments and just making knives on the side for fun and stress relief....it is a pure bonus and joy that I have guys willing to buy my knives and use them.
I don't think the Spyderco Bushcrafter is priced too high, you know it will be perfect with no flaws as with most production pieces. Sal and Spyderco stand behind their product so what more could you ask???

Sorry for the rant but in the end you can't really compare customs to production pieces.
I for one will be looking forward to a Spyderco Bushcrafter in my hands:thumbup::thumbup:

No, I'm sorry. I promise I haven't forgotten. As soon as I have more info, I'll post it. Sal and I have been out quite a bit, so we're playing a little catch-up.

Thanks for your interest! ;)
