Hi Talfuchre,
I'll let Chris run down the sheath and the reasons for his decisions.
Hey Kgd,
Thanx for the encouragement.
If one is familiar with me and with Spyderco, then you know we're not in the habit of making product with marginal quality.
Many think that Taiwan means cheap or poor quality, not so. Those with a Spyderco "Sage" model, which is made by our maker in Taiwan, can attest to the quality of the piece. The Taiwan dollar is about 30% less than the US dollar, or about double the Chinese dollar. The knife made in the US would cost more.
Chris and the boys at Bushcraft UK tried to make a similar model in production with makers in other locations, and they were not successful in getting what they wanted.
I admit this is a challenge to compete with the best out there. I have confidence in Bushcraft UK, their knowledge, experience and attention to detail. I have confidence in our ability to follow their lead and I know our maker.
Certainly if we could make the piece less expensive, we would. We operate on fixed margins. We don't charge as much as the market will bear. We feel that is biting the hand that feeds you.
If the model is well received, we plan to change the wood for each run of 1200 pcs. There are many beautiful stabilized woods. Also if the model is well received, we'll make a "hi-tech" version. Same shape, but full flat grind in a hi-tech stainless like CP-S90V with a synthetic material for the handle, and a Boltaron sheath.
Thanx much for your comments, they are always appreciated.
