Spyderco's Bushcraft in 2009 Catalog

Hi Talfuchre,

I'll let Chris run down the sheath and the reasons for his decisions.

Hey Kgd,

Thanx for the encouragement.

If one is familiar with me and with Spyderco, then you know we're not in the habit of making product with marginal quality.

Many think that Taiwan means cheap or poor quality, not so. Those with a Spyderco "Sage" model, which is made by our maker in Taiwan, can attest to the quality of the piece. The Taiwan dollar is about 30% less than the US dollar, or about double the Chinese dollar. The knife made in the US would cost more.

Chris and the boys at Bushcraft UK tried to make a similar model in production with makers in other locations, and they were not successful in getting what they wanted.

I admit this is a challenge to compete with the best out there. I have confidence in Bushcraft UK, their knowledge, experience and attention to detail. I have confidence in our ability to follow their lead and I know our maker.

Certainly if we could make the piece less expensive, we would. We operate on fixed margins. We don't charge as much as the market will bear. We feel that is biting the hand that feeds you.

If the model is well received, we plan to change the wood for each run of 1200 pcs. There are many beautiful stabilized woods. Also if the model is well received, we'll make a "hi-tech" version. Same shape, but full flat grind in a hi-tech stainless like CP-S90V with a synthetic material for the handle, and a Boltaron sheath.

Thanx much for your comments, they are always appreciated.

Looks like a nice knife. It is quite a bit of money. The Tommi Puukkos go for just over $300. It would be hard to justify a good production for the same money as a custom knife.

TF,
I don't have an ETA yet, when I do, I'll post it here. I'll see if I can arrange a pic of the sheath in the meantime.

I know - I know - any date on shipment?

Thansk,

Not yet, I promise, as soon as I know something I'll post.

And as soon as I have or can take a picture of the sheath, I'll post that too. Promise. ;)

I haven't forgotten you.

Spyderco is smoking some heavy stuff if they think were going to pay 300 for a 01 knife you can get a custom knife of that quality for about half.

Thats MSRP, most places are going to have it cheaper, including at brick and mortars and gunshows/knifeshows etc. I can't afford one right now, but I am definitely interested in trading for one.

I really love the six Spyderco folders I own and have not yet bought a fixed blade model. I thought the Bushcraft might be my first, but the price will keep me from buying one. I paid much less for a wonderful Koster in 3V steel with a beautiful sheath, and I have a drawer full of various Moras. Even if I didn't already have the Koster, I don't know if I'd spend that kind of money on a production bushcraft knife.

Anyway, I hope it's a success for Mr. Glesser and his great knife company!

Stay sharp,
desmobob

Mr Glesser seems like a great guy and the knife looks very nice but after recieving one of Stompers I can't help feeling that many of the others out there are over priced....or maybe it's just Stompers that are under-priced !!!!!

Well, I might as well continue this thread. I love Spyderco and they are one of the best production companies out there, if not THE best.

That all said, their fixed blades are....well...missing something. What ever it is that their folders have their fixed don't. If you look at them and take everything into consideration regarding price, design, and looks. The fixed blades fall behind their folders in all categories.

Critically looking at the Bush crafter one already sees some issues. They are using traditional materials at HIGH prices and it is made in Taiwan. They should stick to what brought them there. Innovation. When I heard they were branching out into the bushcraft market, I thought, Wow, VG10 with mod scales at a reasonable price. When I saw the blade along with the price I was disappointed. Why not buy a custom? This knife will be discontinued pretty quick no doubt.

Sal, Imagine an Aqua with a VG10, flat ground, 3/16th thick blade and orange zytel handle plus a kydex for around $100. Now that is something! I will always admire your boldness in trying new ideas out. You are a true innovator. :D

psy-ops

Ya can't get more high tech than H1. :) Ironically, if they had made this model as you wished "VG10, flat ground, 3/16th thick blade and orange zytel handle plus a kydex" this thread would be negative about it not being in tool steel and natural woods instead taiwanese/price. ;)

Yeah Psy-ops, I don't know if it's just cos we have such good custom makers on this forum but I have to agree with ya !!!!

Good enough.

Im still waiting to see the price drop from store to store. I know the digi camo millie is going for $219 MSRP, yet mine was $140 Cdn, not bad in my eyes.

So, in time when this goes out and I can see the "real" price of it, im still not sold on it. But, you know me I will probably end up getting it anyways:rolleyes:

Once you taste spydie you dont go back.:D
