Spyderco's First Traditional Knife

Ah, but I remember some traditionals with screw pivots getting the traditional nod.

They just won't accept a Spyderco as traditional in that sub-forum...just the way it goes.

Oh boy, the sub forum will explode then. Sal and Eric are considering Traditional styled slip-its as requested by forumites.

It's an active new thread: https://www.spyderco.com/forumII/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=66191

Just an excerpt:

The Roadie is a test of the double-dent opening system. Eric is using small holes for opening the alternate blades on his designs. (He's created a few really nice designs. Many protos and much refinement. Very functional).

Let's suppoe that the double-dent is well received, do you think there would be interest in a Stockman folder with double-dents to pen the blades instead of nail nicks? I believe that they save space, but I really don't think nail nicks are a user friendly solution to opening a folding knife.

If it happens, get ready to see grown men cry... And if you like that sort of thing, get your popcorn ready.

I'm laughing in anticipation already. :D

If a Spyderco slip joint Stockman becomes a reality, the whole forum will suffer an irreversible meltdown....psychiatrist's will have to revise the DSM5 and add hundreds of new mental disorders to just cover traditional knife knuts gone hog wild:D

Ahhh..... but (and this is a thread tangent ) isn't almost 34 years of pocket clip, one-hand-opening, single blade, modern materials almost traditional? By definition?

Really, we have a couple of generations of kids knowing this type as Dad's and even Grandpa's knife.

And I am part of the generation that can remember those new fangled Spyderco's advertised in the outdoors magazines for the first time. I was 12

Sorry to the OP for the rant.

I made that exact argument.
Probably part of the reason I am unofficially shunned. ;)

:D :D Ya, even I wouldn't mention that in that sub forum. I can respect boundries. ;)

Yes, I discovered that day that there are some ideas which count as heresy in certain parts.

I like all knife types...I'm a true knife slut.
Knife sluts of the world unite!!!

Oooooo..... yellow frn ,H1, with Spyder edge. I'll take two. :)

Aw gee...perhaps the yellow FRN and H1 steel would be acceptable, but a SpyderEdge would have the traditionalist's breaking out the Jonestown flavored Kool-Aid. How about we leave out the serrations?:D

I guess.... but it would be a great companion to my yellow delrin Schrade large stockman I bought new in the mid 80's.

See ,even I have a couple slipjoints ;)

Interesting thread. Thanx for sticking up for us Stays Sharp. Appreciate.

Based on what I'm hearing, I would say that the "Roadie" is not a traditional knife.

It's easy to open, safe to use, has gimping on the spine and the finger choil, has a finger choil, uses a synthetic scale material, has a removable pivot, has a trade-mark round through hole ( So it is not confused with other brands ), has a "Double Dent" for convenient safe nail-less opening, has a large kick to keep the edge from hitting the back spring, uses a modern stainless alloy and it has a cute "tick" on the handle and the blade. ;)

I admit that all of the above features are subtle, so I can see where it might be confused as a closet traditional, but it's not. In fact there is probably nothing quite like it so it really isn't a tradtional anything. :D

Hi Milesterry,

Welcome to Bladeforums.
