One of the biggest draws I've always liked about Spyderco are some of their models designed for great self defense (SD) use.

Some of my personal favorites are the C-60 Ayoob model, The Captain, The Yojimbo and the Spyderhawk are among my favs.

What are some of your favorite Spyderco SD models and why?

I've always liked the Civilian for the pure, nitty-gritty nastiness of its overall design and blade shape. Among my other favorite self defense-based Spyderco designs are the Chinook3 and the P'kal. Southnarc's method is quite impressive.

i would have loved to get a swick...but the spot is good too in that regard

Hey brother just for your information I heard 2 days ago that they are about to have another Sprint Run of the Swick model. I personally plan on getting one of those myself. I think it was 200 units that they are planning on.

It's a Golden Colorado USA Spyder to boot

I like the Paramilitary and the Yojimbo for SD blades. The compression lock can't be beat.

SD I'd have to go with an SE Military or the Civilian. The Para is a bit too short for my tastes.

the millie is basically my 'last resort sd' option
main reason is it gives you an extra 6 cm reach which could make the difference between delivering a good blow or just scratching the aggresor's clothes (see the crappy pic below)
of course, if the liner breaks in that position it would more than likely hack your flexion tendons, thus making you unable to form a fist

thats good news :D thanks bro

Like wintermute above, the Lil' Temperance is my favorite. The P'Kal comes second. Two completely different knives

Military is light fast and a sticker/slicer.
SuperHawk is solid-locking and has a blade that rips, grip is fantastic.
Starmate has a nice sturdy point and a great grip.
Yojimbo pierces easy and has the compression lock along with a straight as they come edge to slice and a nice grip.
K'Pal is a wicked little knife, cuts great, with a superior lock-up.
Civilian a ripper will scare the crap out of people just looking at it.
Police is a sticker with a sharp sturdy point, long blade, great solid lock up.
Manix has that wide blade with a sharp point and it feels like you couldn't possibly break the thing, so it's confidence inspiring right there.
Shabaria needle sharp point and a long hooking blade.
ATR, reinforced sharp point and an excellent slicer, solid all metal build and the mighty compression lock.
Dodo good for carry in those buildings with very short blade limits and it's a wicked-pointed little job that I sure wouldn't want cutting me.
Large Persian great grip, sharp point and a lot of razor sharp edge, very solid.
Most any of the bigger Spydies are pretty darn good for SD and a few of the smaller as well.

Hey thanks for the input "Wintermute">> It's been a while since I've heard about the Lil Temperance model referred to as an SD blade. I truly regret trading my Rhino Horn Lil T away. The Lil T may be one of the most solid and unique blade styles in the entire Spyderco line up.

Well "Jill Jackson" you sure put a huge gamut of SD Spyderco blades out there to consider. I can't really take issue with any of the ones you listed. But I knew when I started this thread there were going to be many Spyders mentioned.

And "Tigretony" that is a very solid group of blades you have listed there. I'm sure seeing the Superhawk model pop up over and over again as being an SD Spyder. It's a great Hawkbill and an awesome all purpose blade to boot.

Spyderco sure has a great line up to select from for SD blades. The really nice thing about Spyderco's SD blades is that all of them also make great everyday carry blades as well with the possible exception of the Civilian. Although I've heard that the Civilian model in VG-10 is rugged enough to use as an all purpose blade.

P'kal
superhawk
civilian
millie/para-milli
police 3
chinook
full serated zdp endura.:D

I'm glad to see that Spyderco is making another run of the Swick---hopefully I'll get one this time around.

In regards to the Li'l Temperance---that wonderful little knife is good for practically anything. It's a staple in my EDC rotation.

I think we're also overlooking the Street Beat. Fred Perrin is very well-trained in the disciplines of SD, and I think that this small fixed blade design has its merits, especially being a fixed blade.

Captain for SD? Hm.

I love the Civilian and the P'Kal btw.

Greetings Dr. Heelhook :) I sense your skepticism about the Spyderco C-111 Captain model being a great self defense blade. Now I can fully appreciate that we all have our favorites and not all of us feel right with the same models. But when you take the C-111 Captain model and work on the blade for about an hour you can get that knife so sharp that it's truly scary .

To me the Captain model is like a convex straight razor when you have it fully sharp. No matter whether you pull that blade down or slash it upward that blade has the capacity to slash/cut like you can't believe.
To me there is one main factor that determines whether or not a blade is suited for SD use>> that is the comfort level you feel while holding it.

OH yes the C-111 Captain model is truly an SD folder to be sure. I totally agree with you about the Civi, Matriarch and P'Kal all being great for SD use.

If I had to use a knife for SD, it would be the hair-splitting sharp CPM D-2 Millie.

But I hope I'm never foolish enough to lose my sidearm and need a knife in a SD situation. A knife, ANY KNIFE is a pretty sorry excuse of a SD weapon.
