Spyderco's SD Blades: Your Favorites?

Id have to go for the Chinook, Superhawk, Para, Dodo, and Swik/Spot.

My Endura, Police or Mini Manix would be great or my Moran fixed blade would be nice, my Para that I should have soon should be good for SD but the length would be something of a draw back.

As usual, the preamble of tools come after mindset (awareness - avoidance - tactics) and skills (empty hand - gun/knife).

For those in civilian dress, particularly jeans:
P'kal.. Nothing comes out faster or more consistently for me (in my off-hand), can be integrated with a whole host of other objects while training (water bottles, flashlights, pens, rolled magazines, etc), nor can strike as ballistically (in pikal grip) - much like throwing out rapid-fire jabs.

I do like the Military and Paramilitary, but they excel as utility knives - can be used as SD knives as most quality one-handed folders can. Also, the "reach advantage" is IMO quite over-rated. For a edged weapon, I'd consider the difference between a machete and a pocket folder a "range advantage", not the couple of inches difference gained from different grips. Also, you should practice from the most natural and immediate grip obtained when accessing and opening the folder - for my non-waved folders: it's forward grip, edge up, gripping very close to the blade, regardless of whether it's a manual or assisted opening.

If I had to use a knife for SD, it would be the hair-splitting sharp CPM D-2 Millie.

But I hope I'm never foolish enough to lose my sidearm and need a knife in a SD situation. A knife, ANY KNIFE is a pretty sorry excuse of a SD weapon.

Ben in principle I have to agree with you. But on the other hand where carrying a firearm or other desirable weapon is either not feasible or possible I sure would like to have something to fall back on.

The old adage of "Never Take A Knife To A Gun Fight" is very true.

But if I'm in a shopping mall or anywhere in public and I was to get mugged ( GOD forbid) or asaulted by one or more jerks I do want to be able to put up some kind of resistance.

And I have this thread going to hopefully get a consensus of what would might be ideal under those circumstances>> and if I had nothing else but a good knife handy. In other words I still say that something is better than nothing at all. Also with as few of people who even carry pocket knives in this day and age you would still have an element of surprise which could be in your favor.

But realistically>> I hope to GOD I never have to put it to the test>> But being prepared is certainly not futile by any means IMO.

an SD knife for hypothetical use would be an interesting deliberation.
a great majority who carry with the intention of SD will probably never see it put to such use.
but it would be safe to assume that any spyderco knife could be applied for SD if such a appaling situation was to present itself.
yeah, i sure would like to see the look on mr bad guy's face upon a chance meeting with a spydie civillian though in reality it would probably be a cricket.

In regards to the Li'l Temperance---that wonderful little knife is good for practically anything. It's a staple in my EDC rotation.

Exactly, that's why I listed it. I'm not a big scary knife guy and this thing is (or so I'm told) great for everyday stuff. Wish I could get my hands on one.

Whichever one I could get into play the quickest. With that said, my EDC usually consists of a medium to large folder (Military, Kris, Big Persian or Endura) a small to medium folder (Delica, Caly III, Mini Persian or Khukuri) and always my SE Tasman IWB.

So, from an EDC standpoint, I think I would opt for a Military, Kris or Waved E4 with the Chinook III following closely (have one, but don't carry it much these days). If I have an actual choice and can choose from only my Spyderco blades, I'm reaching for my Rock Salt baby! I'm pretty sure that animal could lop off extremities with ease.

The old adage of "Never Take A Knife To A Gun Fight" is very true.

The flip side is, "never bring a gun to a knife fight!":)
Both have their strengths at different ranges.
Better yet is THIS old saying; "DON'T GET IN FIGHTS!!!"

JD,

I completely agree that a knife is better than nothing.

(In the shopping mall, I always have a SIG P226 9MM in a shoulder holster)

But if I couldn't, or wouldn't, carry a gun, and had to rely on a knife, I think I'd figure out a way to carry a large fixed blade, like the Spyderco (Hossum designed) Forester. (This knife was specifically designed by Jerry Hossom as a fightring knife.)

I feel comfortable with a folder like the Military, only because it's there to back up a sidearm.

(I may be paranoid, but even paranoids have reeal enemies! :) )

Well Stabman I sort of see your point :) But for poor souls who become the victims of car jackings and home invasions they certainly weren't looking to get into fights.

I personally haven't been involved in any physical altercations in many years. But like the title to my last post says "ACE IN THE HOLE". It never hurts to be prepared for just in case you would encounter a Prozac Space Case or a Jim Beam induced Mike Tyson wannabee. And some times a person can get in the middle of such insanity when they never intended to.

And with this job market and economy going straight to a lower region of hell you are going to see violence and drug use and all kinds of aberant behavior where you would least expect to see it. I'm just bracing for bad days ahead and I think it's better to have something to help rather than nothing at all.

But one great way to stay out of fights is to avoid bars and saloons like a case of AIDS. Just trying to be prepared that's all :)

For home invasions and carjackings, it IS different than a typical fight scenario; hard to avoid at times. But, in the home you can usually have more than a folding knife with you:), and when driving, always leave enough space between you and the car ahead to be able to get the hell out of Dodge(run the carjacker's foot over too:thumbup:).
I do avoid bars, especially since I stopped drinking. Ever spend a night at a bar sober? I never want to again(BORING!!!).

I nominate the Chinook series for the greatest SD folders of all time(and not just Spyderco, either), followed by the Mini Manix, or the P'kal for off-hand use.
Civilian gets a nod of course, but it uses different mechanics than I normally would. Beautiful knife though.:)

My Military would do a SD job well, its got a good range, its real sharp its always with me for EDC and its the knife I use most often and am most comfortable with.

Well Stabman you've done another good turn to fuel this thread. I was looking for one more guy to endorse the P'Kal model. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I haven't gotten mine as of yet but it is now off of my want list and it has made it's way to my "GOTTA HAVE" list. And I always get everything on my GOTTA HAVE List ;) Not only is the P'Kal a Golden CO USA Spyder but it is an absolutely beautiful design all the way around. I can't wait to get my tax refund because that will be the first money I spend and I am going to get the trainer as well.

The only thing that would make me postpone getting a P'Kal is if Spyderco would do a sprint run and reintroduce the C-60 Massad Ayoob with a G-10 handle. That is my current dream/fantasy SD blade and I love the original Ayoob a lot. Now I like your choice of the Civilian but I still prefer it's little brother the MATRIARCH. As you know it's also a wicked reverse S blade as is the Civi. Spyderco does give a guy many choices in the SD arena for sure ;)

And since it's designed for utility work, you can avoid that annoying "carried it as a weapon" stigma(especially important in Canada).
Works good cutting subs in half(the sandwich:D).

You NEED the P'kal.:)
A great little knife which is more versatile than I thought it would be at first.
And, strangely enough, most people who have seen it thought it was "cute" rather than "scary", at least when being used in a normal fashion.
One of these days, I'll have to get a titanium cage made for the ball, and then it will be a dream knife.
Plastic cage works well, and I have no worries about it, but there's just something neat about metal(especially titanium).
