What happened? I talked with customer service today cause I needed a new spring for the latch on mine, and he pretty much said "we can't do anything, and if you send it in we have to keep it, and give you a refund."

I was relatively shocked to say the least...

In the meantime is there anywhere to get a replacement spring? I really liked that feature.

Just a guess but the fact that they would keep it if you sent it back, makes it sound like some sort of liability issue.

Yea, that would be it I guess, problems with suppliers were mentioned too. Really weird overall...

I sent mine in a while ago for repairs and never heard anything back. I sent an email wondering what was up and Terry said they had no record of receiving it. I have yet to hear back. So what your saying is that I'll never see it again? Even if it is found (seems unlikely) they will keep it anyway. Fantastic.

Yea, if they find it now, you won't be getting it back. He said they CANNOT send any out, no matter what. Not even parts! All I wanted was the tiny spring!

You'll get a refund though... I know that's no consolation though really...

So... I'm sent an inferior product that needs repair or replacement. I send it in and it is lost. Now I have no chance of seeing it again, and probably no chance of seeing the money. I understand that the last two problems aren't necessarily Spyderco's fault, but the whole situation has made me grumpy.

And rightfully so.

What was wrong with yours?

Very odd. Can anyone from spyderco comment on this? (BTW, I realize it's now after the business day, and being of the older generation, I don't expect instantaneous net gratification 24/7. However, your constant attention to our questions, comments, "needs" & outright whims does have us a bit spoiled.)

My take on it is that since it's in the 07 catalog, something really major must have come up for them to suddenly do this. My guess is a design or manufacturing flaw that they've just discovered.

Aren't balis possibly the simplest of folder designs, next to slip joints? It seems like it takes Spyderco 2+ years to start production, but Spyderco is arguably the most mobile company in knives...we've seen special editions made in months, easy. My own Spyderfly's latch is broken and bent (shipped that way). I took out the spring and let it be a t-latch...I had planned to send it in, but I guess I should be happy I didn't.....well, I hope we hear more on this...the Spyderfly occupies a very important price range for people who want a real balisong, and I personally like flipping it more than my 4x.

A lot of speculation running rampant. We know for sure the Rainbow Spyderfly is discontinued. If the regular is discontinued and they won't fix them if they are sent in (and credit it for a different knife)...that means a due diligence type action. That would mean something was discovered that is unsafe...perhaps stress fractures occur that render it unsafe after long term use (FOR EXAMPLE!)

Another example may be that Colorado just outlawed Balis so they can no longer sell them/service them...again all speculation until official confirmation.

However, until Spyderco speaks on the matter, we don't really know what the deal happens to be.

As far as manufacturing goes; I imagine finding a factory that can reliably produce a production product capable of withstanding the forces applied to a Bali must be fairly difficult to find. Since they are illegal in so many countries, quite frankly not many plants have experience in making them. Cherish your well made Balis.

somebody from spyderco needs to comment on this thread and provide accurate information. This is really a shock.

Most of the people who respond here are likely on their way to Europe for some knife shows, so like Ed Ricketts mentioned, I guess we'll have to be patient.

Wow this is a shock. I just got a spyderfly for Christmas from my wife. Everything went fine with it for a couple weeks. All I did with it was flip it open and closed (and cut myself 2 or 3 times;)). However, i noticed that the handles were uneven when closed. Ok, no big deal. It's a user and a 60 dollar bali. Then after about 3 weeks of carry, the stop stud right below the "440C" worked its way loose. I emailed Spyderco about it, and they said that they had never heard of anything like that and to send it in. Well, I was going to do just that, but i slipped my mind. Eventually, I just popped the pin back in and tapped it with a hammer until it was as even as I could get it. It seems to be holding up fine, and i feel that with the way the knife is kinda wonky all over the place that they would just send me a new one. I would rather keep this one, since my wife got it for me.
Hearing the current news, I'm kinda glad I kept it:( It really is a nice knife for the money. Mine was a little flawed and different, but the next step up for a good bali is twice what I paid. I'm looking forward to Spyderco's answer on this one.

Are you telling me Spyderflys have been deemed illegal? Has anyone posted this in the Balisong forum?

Balisongs and autos must be considered vicious killers in City Hall...

I heard from them today! I received a letter informing me that my Spyderfly has a manufacturing defect that cannot be repaired. They gave me the option of them sending it back to me in its defective condition, or substitute it with another catalogue item of the same value. I hope they will let me preorder the Szabofly. I’m worried about their balisong line, however.

Dangit, that was a really important piece of the production balisong world...the entry level good balisong.

As per the szabofly, I'm not holding my breath. Maybe it'll come out before I get to graduate school--that's not joking. I'm really not sure.

This must have just happened in the last two week...I was at the Shot Show and they had them on display for orders...

Ive had mine now for almost two years and no problem with it...havent really used or carried it though either.

I noticed there is no link or picture of them on their website now.
