Spyderfly Discontinued...

This must have just happened in the last two week...I was at the Shot Show and they had them on display for orders...

Ive had mine now for almost two years and no problem with it...havent really used or carried it though either.

I noticed there is no link or picture of them on their website now.

I noticed that about a week or so ago. There is no Szabofly page either (unless I somehow missed it... doubt it).

They're still in stock at different stores online, but I imagine collectors will jump all over them with this supposed news.

What I want to know, is what exactly is wrong with the design that made them disco it so abruptly?

Maybe some idiot whacked a finger off with one and sued. These days, people are not responsible for their own stupidity, it is always the fault of some inanimate object.

I was worried that might be the case. You can always count on people being stupid.

I'm just confused why Spyderco hasn't made any statements about discontinuing the knife? Surely they know the forum(s) are buzzing about it?

Because perhaps Sal and Company are somewhere between Jolly ole England and Colorado...

Dont bet on that possibility being right. This sounds like a serious enough problem that some lawyer is counseling them to keep their mouths shut. If they are being sued, then anything they put on this forum can be used as ammo against them.

I just hope the finacial damage that may be done to spyderco is not too extensive.

Ok, time to break out the big guns...

Well, the spring latch isn't great, but the rest of the knife is put together rock solid...I can't imagine these knives having a reoccuring failure (that's not cosmetic).

My guess is that it is a 'legality of sale/manufacture' issue, and not a 'defect' issue that is behind it. I just hope, if I'm right, that they don't pull a 'Cold Steel' and open a "Texas Office" to legally sell it from.;) (last sentence is meant as a joke-I doubt Spyderco would ever follow in CS' footsteps)

Spyderco has made it public knowledge that the Spyderfly is discontinued by selectively letting a few customers know via the W&R department. They also removed the Spyderfly from the online catalog (on their website). The company knew that there was a chance that the info would start rummors on forums.

LOL, know that you are joking. Gotta say though, I am very impressed with the way that Sal has talked with regards to other companies that have taken Spyderco ideas (especially Cold Steel) on this forum. The company has a lot of integrity.

I am sure that the company will do what is best for the customers. Perhaps they just aren't happy with the quality that is being produced and would prefer not to continue putting the Spyderco name on such a product?

The manufacture defect mentioned previously is specific to those knives mentioned in the original post. There is not a broad based manufacture defect with the Spyderfly. It is rare, but as with any other Spyderco product, manufacturing defects do occur. And as always we try to resolve the situation in a fair and proper manner.

Customs has informed us that some of the parts used in the construction of the SpyderFly may be questionable and there are some complicated legal issues that have arisen. Until such time that we are able to resolve these issues, we have discontinued the following items: SpyderFly, SzaboFly and Bi-Fold. We anticipate that we will be able to resolve these issues; however, it may take several months to do so. At this time we are cancelling any existing orders and not accepting any new orders on these items.

Interesting to know.

Now, back to one of my original questions. In the meantime, is there any where to get one of these simple tiny spings?
