*SpyderNation - Open talk and hangout corner *

Well I find my native (lockback) is very smooth but I still can't flick it open real fast ether...

Hmmm I wonder if it's part of the locking mechanism? The R is smooth, just not quick to deploy. Anyone with a Caly 3 want to chime in?

Oh I thought you meant it was gritty or something iv held a good number of spyderco lock backs at gun shows and I'm yet to see one that really easy to flip open.

I do think its mainly the fact that its a lock back though.

Lock backs don't flip open because of the nature of the lock. The tang has to fight the locking bar up to the final height that occurs right before it locks in place. Open it real slow, you will feel it the resistance the entire time. Conversely, if you look at a liner lock, once you overcome the detent it is free for a good portion of blade travel (until the tang picks the detent ball back up). Also, you build up potential energy with a strong detent and then once overcome, the blade flies open with enough force to not really be affected by the blade picking up the detent ball right before lock up. My Caly 3 is very hard to flip open, but my Stretch is easier because it is a bigger blade.

Ah makes sense. Learned something new today. One reason I love these forums.

What are your opinions on G10 vs. FRN handles? I have only owned G10 but I really like the feel of FRN..

I like them bolth:

g10
Good grip, looks better more "expensive" feel (and well, cost lol)

Frn
Best grip, not the best looking still not bad though, lite weight and keeps the cost down.

Both have proven to be reliable in my experience. Sorry to go vanilla on you but I like them both. Better yet, I have no qualms about either one.

for flickng open lockbacks, try your middle finger instead of the thumb.

Exactly, that is how I get my Stretch open. My Caly 3 is the carbon fiber version, and it just feels like it shouldn't be flicked, but rather opened slowly and nicely.

Personally I LIKE G-10 or a grippy CF better than FRN. It just seems like a higher grade of material to use on a quality knife. That said, FRN is pretty indestructable, and with the proper texture, quite grippy. It just looks so......... Plastic. I'd say that 90%of my Spydies are G-10, CF, micarta or some material other than FRN. I dunno..... A knife that falls into Spyderco's price range just shouldn't feel like plastic IMHO.

Tuffthumbz  He does incredible work, he did an Anso patterned blue anodized Spyderco Ti Mllie once that blew me away. I tried buying it, but didn't make it in time.

Yeah man. It's pure sexy. That HD vid he did of it made me cry a little. Total man tears though.

I had a pretty severe case of jaw drop myself lol
