SpydieChef thread

My apologies to the necromancy police, but it was either a bump or duplicate thread...

My much anticipated Spydiechef arrived this week and I am impressed beyond expectation. I suspect there was a new run, as retailers and Spyderco were both out of stock for several weeks. I’m not sure if there was any QCI involved, but mine came out of box with zero lock stick.

Everyone has different tastes and needs, but if LC200N holds up to expectations this knife might put an end to my knife lust. I wasn’t expecting that. Suddenly most knives on my “to buy” list are forgotten. Why bother? I anticipate a second purchase for deep storage backup before year’s end (that’s only happened once before).

After two solid years, my reigning top-spot champions are very scaired of being dethroned. In a weird way that makes me kind of sad...the search may be over.

<<<Who’s #1 now???>>>

ETA: Lets get this thread rolling again! The knife is that good.

I’m with you. My knife collection is small but unfortunately, from the financial perspective, growing. Each time I look at buying a new knife, I think: what does it give me that the SpydieChef doesn’t? There are some knives with specific advantages, but so far none top the SpydieChef for my overall needs.

The Chaparral is crazily small and pocketable, but of course the blade is much smaller. I love my new ZT 0609, but while it’s very slightly easier to carry, it’s not as good a slicer. I never use my PM2; I always prefer to carry the SpydieChef.

From when I first got it, I appreciated the ease of carry for such a large blade, the thinness behind the edge that makes it a great slicer, the comfortable titanium handle, and the essentially rustproof blade. Now that I have other frame locks, one thing I’ve recently learned to appreciate is the great access to the lock bar. It’s incredibly easy to disengage with that large cutout on the show-side scale, and its integration with the SpydieHole makes the knife relatively slim with no hump needed for the hole. My favorite knife so far, but I need more time with the 0609.

I ordered one yesterday. I'e been eyeing one for a while and with lots of outdoor food prep and activities around the ocean right around the corner for me I pulled the trigger. I haven' anticipated a knife this much in a while. I typically carry some variation of PM2, and it's and great daily carry but am interested to see if the Spydiechef ends up with more pocket time.

For my use, the SpydieChef fits a lot better in the pocket, and it's thinner behind the edge and thus a better slicer. Both are comfortable but different from each other with regard to the grip. I think that when a lot of force is applied for hard tasks, the thicker handles of the PM2 have a more reassuring feel. For comfort, I like the placement of my thumb better on the SpydieChef.

Both are great knives. I'll be interested in what you think once you've had some time with the new knife.

While I REALLY do like the spydiechef it won't be replacing anything. But the basically maintenance free side of it will have it's place in the rotation.

I've had mine a few weeks, it's great. Recently had to use it twice in unexpected wet scenarios, it was comforting knowing I didn't have to worry about rust. Its light weight is quickly growing on me, I usually like the heft a knife gives but I'm loving how I can just whip it out, flick, use, and throw back in the pocket with little effort.

One thing I plan on upgrading is the clip. I usually love the wire clip, but for some reason this one keeps getting caught on things for me and has unfortunately bent slightly. For fear of losing the knife due to a loose clip, I'm probably going to get a milled ti clip.

Interesting. I just noticed yesterday that the clip isn’t quite as tight as I would like. The darn thing was super hard to adjust...but I was trying not to go overboard. I like the wire clip though, so I’ll see how it goes.

Also, the clip screw was nonferrous, I assume titanium.

Did you use pliers? That's what I was going to do lol... No idea if that's ideal! And I recall Sal stating in another thread that it has LC200N components in it, not sure if the screws or what.

lieferung lieferung I held the short tines (the ones that mate with the scale) with flat nose pliers and tried to bend the U portion by hand.

I didn’t want to clamp down on the bend mechanically, for fear I would screw it up. (I’m really experienced at screwing things up, BTW.)

In the end, I improved the tension a tiny bit. Not quite to where my other wire clip Spydies are, but maybe enough anyway.

My gut tells me once the tension is to my liking, it’ll stay that way.

I am happy with the clip retention on my SpydieChef. If I wanted to adjust the clip one way or the other, I would take it off and remount it backwards so the clip is hanging off the back end. That would allow careful bending from a relatively secure mount to minimize the chance of screwing things up. YMMV.

A big THANK YOU for this tip -- it worked great! Back to stock retention.

Just bringing this thread up again... it's such a usable knife! Here last week on my trip to the mountains... morning coffee on a rainy day:

Sweet pic. Just got back from wearing mine every day while sailing the last 2 weeks:D

Mine arrived while I was at work last week. So far it’s an awesome knife! It had a tiny bit of lockstick but nothing terrible. The action is pretty stiff, but I can usually flick it open with my pointer or middle finger fairly easily. The wire clip might be my favorite style of clip(the Mantra has one too)!

It will most likely spend more time in my pocket than the PM2, but I’ll probably still give the Mantra 3 some attention too.

Just purchased one on here. Date code is April 2018. Hoping this is the QCI version! I called spyderco and wasn't really given a clear answer.

They did however say if anything does happen to rust to send it in for warranty so I'm happy with that. This no rust knife really peaks my interest. Knowing I could leave it in the rain or snow and just have to blow it off and keep it moving is pretty awesome. I've never delt with H1 or LC200N so I cant wait!

Are you able to get a mirror edge with those steels?

Someone posted on the factory forum that April 2018 and later have the ceramic detent. My Chef is from the April run and has a dark gray detent ball. I believe the steel ones are shiny.

Congrats on the knife, btw!
