Have seen it before but can't see enough Steve! what a find!!!
A huge local (Kern Co) set of elk sheds I traded for with a local cowboy:

The smaller set on top is from New Mexico. I was there picking up a filly we had bought and traded the rancher/breeder of the filly, out of this set:

"I can't find it, Alex - don't remember where I posted it! Natural and Genuine Stag are often the same thing; either not treated or minimally treated! Most imported Stag is supposed to be treated with Potassium Permanganate, which can darken it considerably, to avoid the spread of disease or micro-organisms!! But it is still called Natural, or Genuine!!" From Charlie.
Here's what elk scales look like after treatment in Potassium Permanganate as Charlie mentioned above:

The lighter coloring we see on a finished knife comes from the working of the scale:

Happy New Year James.
That one puts the SOW in sowbelly! This is a “chonk” of stag as my daughters like to say. 1984 sand mountain collectors club Parker.
Know that country pretty well at least Mineral King. Did a lot of backpacking in that area in my college days. Now that was a long time ago. Yeah we've got oodles of deer here too. Got these pics in a text a few days ago. Guy wants to meet up and do some trading. He ranches on the north side of 58.Nice sheds.
I spend a fair amount of time in the hills and high country above Visalia, but have never seen any trace of elk. Deer are pretty common in the high country, especially in Sequoia NP. I have had them walk through my camp there.
I have a few friends who are avid elk hunters, but they usually get out of state tags for Utah. They have never even mentioned huntable elk in California; if the Kern County herds are on private land or a no hunting preserve, that would explain whey they have never been interested in them.
That thing must be part fallow!Know that country pretty well at least Mineral King. Did a lot of backpacking in that area in my college days. Now that was a long time ago.
