Stag Saturday - Let's See Some Traditional Stag!

I don't think there's any one stag that is nice or not nice. I find it's all in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I think it looks great!

Steve: Thanks. I appreciate the comment. I have just not seen on all brown like this. I wondered if it was somehow not desirable to be all dark?

I think it looks great Alan. Stag is my main concentration and I've got them from almost white to really dark. I don't have one like yours but I sure like it except for two blades. As far as I'm concerned the fact that it's stag is what I like.

Alan: I hear you. I have just not seen one uniformly brown like this. What I'm gathering from the great responses here is that; first it's not good or bad just different and colors especially after burnt treatment vary a lot.

I also don't care for the two blades in this pattern. That's why it's now on the Bay. Not because of the stag.

Since Stag is my favorite handle material and I have a lot of opinions and you asked for my opinion :
There is no Bad Stag , just some that is better than others. Some people like matched stag from side to side . Some people like Deep Valleys and some people like Popcorn . I happen to like both and it does not matter that much to me if they are not matched side to side. I prefer Stag that is on a Bare Headed or single bolstered knife because of the need on most knives to transition from the thicker Stag down to the bolster height. That transition loses you some Stag. Very fine custom stag knives will sometimes have thinner slabs of stag to reduce the transitions. I do want even thickness of slabs side to side . Your slabs are pretty dark but they will usually get to a darker brown color anyhow , but maybe not that dark . Since you have not shown a Top or Bottom view , I can only guess that you slabs are not even in thickness side to side because of the lack of much transition on the Mark side as compared to the Pile side. Because it is a 73 in Stag , I like your knife . If I was choosing between this one and 25 other knives , I would continue looking for Deep Valleys and Popcorn , and small transitions with a little less black . I have nothing against Burnt Stag instead of Natural Stag . My normal EDC includes a 73 with Burnt Stag , Deep Valleys on one side and Popcorn Stag on the other. I just wish that GEC would make Stag Knives without Brass Liners and Pins because of Vertigris. There is No Bad Stag . Here is what I like
My Burn Stag 73's

My 72 Natural Stag . The only one that I have seen with the Gray Color

That is just my opinions and everybody's is different .

Harry

Harry: Thanks so much for the excellent primer on stag. This all makes sense to me and of course my question comes down a lot to personal preference. But, I can easily see now why some things work better than others. The part about bareheads helped. I thought I always liked butt caps, but I can see why an end cap interferes with the natural shape of the stag.

BTW: As you mentioned. Mine does have verdigris on the slabs. It doesn't bother me so much on this one, I guess because it is dark anyway. It doesn't show much.

I like the knives you posted as examples a lot! I will chalk mine up to a purchase, not well thought out.

Great response! Thanks again Harry.

Alan Stag colouration shows a lot of variation, due to its own hue and the enhancing processes of torching or dyeing. There's even Red Stag (Jeff has a particularly impressive example). So, it's not too dark but I too would not favour that knife mainly because it is not Barehead. Hence you lose some Stag there and on patterns where it's possible, Barehead rules my roost. The 73 is already a fairly robust knife and adding another blade and an end-cap makes for an canon in the pocket....some relish it of course, not I.;)

Here's yet another pic of my Ribby Stag 73, note the lack of end-cap...

Great reply and thank you. I'm pretty well convinced now that there's nothing "wrong" with the color, it just doesn't have a lot of variation to the cream colored natural look. < Like none :-

The lesson learned on this knife was the butt cap on stag covers and how it effects which I fully get, but did not think about enough when I purchased it. Also, the biggest reason I am now just selling on the Bay is it's just way too heavy and chunky for me too. I agree with that.

It does have verdigris where the brass liners meet the slabs as Harry mentioned but that doesn't bother me so much.

Thanks again.

I am by no means, an expert on stag and its' variations: Is the knife below just unusually dark? It's burnt stag from 2012 run.

Would you call this "nice" or too dark? I bought it NIT but it's too big and heavy for me, so I have it on the Bay now. Can't hurt my feelings. I just want to know more about what you all consider nice stag.

It all depends on how the stag was treated. I have no problem with it, here is my nicest stag covered knife.

I'm not sure if this one is an authentic keen kutter or not. The blades were buffed to either clean off rust or hide original markings to make room for the keen kutter logo. Either way I like it just for the stag.

Moore Maker #6301 stockman, 3⅞" closed. I like the slender shape of the clip on this one. California clip?
