Stag Saturday - Let's See Some Traditional Stag!

Jake, congrats on that Ryu stockman! That's one spectacular piece!

I have always wanted an Ohta, and that one is pretty much exactly what I want. Beautiful knife!

Thanks very much, I'm entirely satisfied with it. Mr Ohta is a wonderful person to deal with, despite my zero Japanese and his satisfactory English, there are no difficulties. He posted pix to me of 4 different Stag pairs to choose from, so I was able to get the antler that matched my tastes. You can watch W.I.P. on his site and see your knife progressing. He keeps his delivery dates, makes no wild promises or tall stories and Japan Post seems to deliver stuff to Europe faster than anybody else. Sent Friday delivered Monday, and in the case of this knife, it was sent 27th December and arrived the same year.

Regards, Will

I always enjoy checking this thread on Saturdays for the splendid stag examples that get posted. But today seems like an especially good day for stunning stag!:thumbup:

Congrats on the Kawamura stockman, Jake! That one pretty much left me with my eyes bulging and my mouth hanging open! Not only is the stag incredible, but the nearly sunk joints really float my boat, as does the spear instead of clip main! I'll bet you ARE happy to have that prize!

pmek, the jigged stag is super distinctive, and the knife itself looks a mile long!!! What a long, lean beauty!

Stellar stag on both knives, rockman, but I find J Lloyd's stag to be absolutely breathtaking!:thumbup:

StoneBeard, your 57 whittler has such attractive creamy/toasty stag covers on its sensuous curves! And I'll certainly second your New Year's wish that those of us who enjoy it can pick up more superb stag in the year ahead!

As Jake (Steely Gunz) pointed out, Ron, we're not buying that "meager contribution" stuff! :D You had it right when you said EVERYONE had outstanding stag today, and IMHO that includes your Case barlow!!

Your Ohta stag is exquisite, Will!!:cool: It must be great consolation on the long winter nights you've described! ;)

I've been carrying a Case stag peanut all week. It's one of my favorite gun & knife show acquisitions. The stag doesn't have much texture or color, but I've been surprised at the great variety of stag that's available and I like all of it, even smooth and creamy! :)

Staggering stag Saturday ! We had some eye poppers posted up ! I agree 5K Qs, John Lloyd puts out some spectacular stag.

Looks great. I'm quite seriously thinking about buying a #57 wrangler. I can't decide on what covers I want though. I like the simple elegance of buffalo horn and the sattin finish of the Tidioute version, but also the long pull on the Northfield and I found one with a bit of popcorn on the stag. Tough choice!

I've only had the #57 for a few days but I can confidently say it's an outstanding pattern and you will not be disappointed. I don't know that I would be able to choose between stag or buffalo horn as they are both great cover materials. Either way I'd say you win and I hope that you take the plunge and pick one up:thumbup:

Thanks for the kind words GT. I really like the smooth stag on your peanut and regularly miss a Case stag stockman that I used to have with very similar covers. I came very close recently to picking up a smooth polished stag #77 Washington Jack and would have jumped at the oppertunity earlier this year for a smooth polished #85 had I the chance. I really enjoy all the variation in stag and feel foolish for taking so long to get a few decent examples.

Thank you Jake & StoneBeard.
StoneBread that is a really nice 57 Geppetto. I'm partial to those Splitbacks :)

Your very welcome pmek5. I also have come to really admire the construction of the splitbacks. I feel very fortunate to have gotten this #57 from the exchange as well as my blood red #38 which I've been using when able to tackle the core concepts of whittling. I hope to see more in 2017-

Thanks, I am almost sure I will pick one up after the holidays. Unless I see something different by then, that is. :D The #57 looks like a pocket tank. It isn't love at first sight, but the more I look at them, the more I hear them calling to me.

I'll show some stag canoes for Christmas Eve. I already posted these in the current "Order of the Canoe" thread, but I like them so much I'll reprise them here, too.

This Buck was my first stag canoe (and first stag knife of any pattern, come to think of it), and I think it's still my favorite among the stag knives I own.

A Colt stag canoe, and a back-up I bought once I saw how nice the first one was.

A Rough Rider, and several back-ups (some of which have been given or traded away).

A Schrade-Wostenholm I*XL that I was lucky enough to win in a GAW (thanks, cchu).

As much as the craggy stag gets praised, I love the smooth stuff too GT. Nice canoes!

Swayback....that 73 has some awesome color to it!

Pile side of my Wall St. on delivery day.

Let Christmas & New Year be joyous for all of you

Thanks, Will

All right, got it down... Was jonesing for a large lockback stag folder with a modern stainless steel. After looking some I settled on this Boker lockback Hunter in N690 SS. Solid in hand, and quite nicely made. Was the sharpest knife I've bought by far, easily popping arm hair. I like the combination of smooth light and rough dark in the scales. A well done modern iteration of a classic style.

Maybe this will push you over the edge ISKRA.

You sure are making a good point with that pic, Alan. Feel free to check out the thread I made about my dilema, it'd be great to read your observations and perhaps see another photo of that #57.

Cheers
