Starmate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if it's planned as a sprint or a redo? thoughts?

sal

IMO, a redo now with VG10, and a couple of sprint runs with premium steels to come later would be great.
CF would be really nice on one of the sprints.

I'd definitely be down for one in VG-10.
The haters can hate, and the FFG fanatics can foam at the mouth, but the point is that it's a sweet design.

To Sal, I say "let this run its course, and they'll eventually see the logic behind your decision".

STARMATE!!

please keep the exact same pattern, same gind, same construction.

and please, please, no FFG and no full liners on this one. this would make no sense imho.

I want a vg-10 to carry as edc then a sprint run in cf with some exotic steel that I have never heard of a few months to a year later after I decide if I'm in love with the knife or not.

As a collector I love picking up those oldie spydie designs that I was too young to get and missed out on.

But as a knife user while I use all my knives to a certain degree I only find myself useing a select few with any regularity.

Isn't there a third option? Limited production, like the G10 Endura. Test the waters. I'm really glad to see this coming back. It's one of the many knives I wanted in my teens. Limited funds forced me to spring for the Military. Now I get to right a historical wrong.

Hi Pwet,

We plan a 4 way clip. Clip screws need liners to screw into. We'll skeletonize the liners and keep it as light as possible.

I agree pwet, keep the pattern intact.

The single liner was elegant, let the lefties buy another knife and there no need to change the tip configuration. The starmate is perfect for the "drop" opening method. Choice is not always good...it leaves a lot of unsightly holes that collect dirt and lint.

One change though, pin in the shield, because if you use the knife regularly, the glue fails after a few years and the shield is lost.

Hi Brownshoe,

Haven't seen you here for a while. I'm afraid we'll have to go with the 4 way clip and liners. It was one of the common complaints we received on the first version. I know that it leaves unsighly holes, etc. Hard to please all. Thanx for the input on the shield. Haven't figured out what to do with the shield yet. Making it a 4 way does present it's complications.

By the way, I do owe you one of these for an agreement we made many moons ago. Please figure out a way that I can get one to you. I would like to honor my agreement. You did honor yours.

any idea when the Starmate redux will be scheduled? This is news to me...I was hoping that there would be a slightly smaller version with a 3.5" blade :)

I'm excited to see this Sal. I can hardly wait. I just happened across this thread and a big smile is now on my face. Please don't lose the shield, It is a beautiful detail.

and that right there is why im a spyderco fan

I remember it being the single liner that kept me from buying the knife in the first place. But now that it will be a double liner knife................well, I'm on it like stink on dookie! Just got a thang about them double liners!!

Dual liners are not needed. This model is proof. I know of a Starmate that is in daily use as a utility knife by a Chef and fisherman. Once the pivot pin was loc-tited to keep it from coming loose, the only problem has been a lost shield. It has not loosened up and it is certainly not babied. The only damage the knife has sufferred is a slightly chipped tip from prying a nail out of a tire. If the lock-up of the liner has changed, it is not noticible.

If it was a regular production model with Vg10 and some sprints came out for it, then aren't the only two steels that they would use on it would be ZDP-189 or Super Blue since its being made in Japan?

hi sal,

understood the clip fixation issue.

just one question. i have a hogue knife with linerless G10 body and threaded metal screw insert epoxied into it. i understand it's too late for the starmate sprint but imho it's a very clever solution for the clip issue. would it be more expensive than a full/nested liner?
