I decided it was time to get a good 2x72 belt grinder in the shop. I have many hobbies one being making custom split cane bamboo fly rods and custom parts for adult airguns,as well as the tools and machines to make them. So making a grinder for the shop is going to be a great addition. Since I have been a knife collector and enthusiat for years I finally have the time and means to work on knifemaking the way I always wanted. I love good equipment and machines and it will be a pleasure working with this grinder for knife making.

I ordered the GIB from Polarbear forge and decided to use a 1.5 hp 115v motor from Wayne Coe I will be ordering. I will be using step pulleys and decided against a VFD. Me and electronic speed controls have a history and when they stop working do does all the work in the shop. If a motor goes down I can swap it out. If the VFD goes down I am at the mercy of waiting for warranty or repair time.

So the GIB came shortly after ordering it. It cost $260 shipped and comes in a priority box in a wood case. The parts are well made and built like a tank. They are all laser cut and the laser leaves a very, very rough edge that looks like it was chewed on by a rat. There was no way I would leave all those edges rough, it would drive me crazy looking at it over the years so I took out the angle grinder and ground down all the edges smooth. It took about 3 hours to get all the edges smoothed out. I took the upright and the base to the welder and had him weld it up. I tapped the holes but found a 50% thread engagement much easier to tap then the 75% it was predrilled for.

From Beumont I have coming 2" contact wheel, 4" contact wheel, 4" drive wheel and 4" idler wheel, a 5/8" shaft and 234 pulleys and pillow blocks.

I could have gone cheaper and bought less expensive wheels but from past experience it usually ends up being a punishment not worth the reward of saving a few dollars.

I cut down the multi platen so I could use the 4" and 2" wheel combination I want. I need to make flat platen for it and tool rest.

If everything goes right I have a plan to mount the motor and grinder and have it pivot to make it a horizontal grinder as well as an upright.

So here are a few picts of what I have completed and I will post as it progresses over the next few weeks.

Cost so far is $260 for GIB
Wheels, shaft and pillow blocks from Beaumont $402 shipped

Update and heads up..... Skip buying any spring for a screen door. It will not give you the tension you need. Go to lowes or Home Depot and buy a 69lb spring from the spring section. You can see the spring in the latter pictures in this thread.

Awesome. I want one. If you get it going horizontal, that would be quite nice. My $.02, dissemble it and paint the parts gloss black or grey. Use primer. Don't paint the nuts and bolts, it will look sweet when you assemble it again.

What I have there is just a mock up. It will be getting a coat of primer and matte black paint once it gets all completed. If I feel adventurous I might powder coat it, that is if it fits in my powder coating oven :)

Wow, you do have some tools. I like gloss because it wipes down easy. Matte is nice on the eyes. It will be a dirty mess soon enough, so either way, right? Please share your progress!

Very cool, I myself will be building a KMG clone in the coming months. Basically every few knives I manage to sell will get me closer piece by piece... mine will all be painted a navy blue, and hopefully with black hardware (because a grinder only functions as nicely as it looks :D)

I love my GIB, but I went with the VFD from Wayne Coe. Being that it is a Nema 4X case you would pretty much have to grind with the case open to get any grinding dust into it, and the ability to just reach over and fine tune the speed is worth every penny. I am still working on getting mine welded so I can start a horizontal conversion on it. My brother was going to weld it up for me last weekend for free, but his welder wasn't working when he got it here. It wasn't a fuse and we know the oven outlet is good:( He figures that something got rattled loose inside during transport. If the welder isn't working by this weekend I will be making a few calls next monday to find a person to weld it up.

I thought about the VFD long and hard from Wayne. Maybe in the future but I have done enough swearing at electronics for now.

I got the idea to run it horizontal with a pulley system when I happen to be adjusting the pulley tension on my drill press. I thought " The drill press uses a horizontal pulley system" and thats when I decided the GIB is going horizontal as well :)

I just ordered my kit from Polarbear, so I'll be following your thread closely! I'm powering mine with a 2hp DC motor with a VFD. I'm also planing on running a 9" disk sander from the same motor and VFD - should be interesting...

I suggest you get your base and upright welded. It is far stronger then the bolt on option. Today Fedex is suppose to deliever my wheels, so hopefully I can get some work done on it today

I ordered a GIB about a week ago and I will also be watching this thread!

I plan to weld some also. Would you consider welding other parts too besides the base?

Fed Ex came and had some much needed parts:D This is kinda how I think I am going to mount the pulley-power wheel set up. I plan on mounting the motor behind the grinder on a hinge that can be adjusted to keep tension in a horizontal position. Time to go to Lowes and pick up some of the hardware to get everything mounted

It looks great. fyi - I have a single speed step pulley KMG, I am a neophyte at this stuff, the single speed works great for me and its SIMPLE. I like SIMPLE.

Looking good! I'm planning on doing exactly the same thing you did with the pulleys, but i'm thinking of adding a 9" disk to the end of the drive shaft. Might have to think about the system a bit. There will be a lot of lateral pressure on the shaft with a disk, so I might need another shaft with an end bearing or something - i'm open to suggestions, though.

I went to TruGrit today and picked up some belts. It is a great thing to have them locally and they are real nice and helpful to deal with. I then did some priming and painting on the frame and it is now sitting and drying. Tomorrow I will assemble the entire thing. I still need to order a motor and have a couple of leads. I know as soon as I pay full price for a motor one will show up at 1/2 price...lol

Here are some picts

I did some assembling today. It all went together well. I need to work on the platen and figure out how I want that. I am going to get a stronger spring as well.
