...I'm sure he's a junkie and not really living anywhere. He'll be in and out of jail on probation violations forever. This is why when people argue "nonviolent drug offenders shouldn't get jail time", this counter argument comes up. If I had time to run up to flint Michigan I'd find him. Alas I'm working my ass off getting ready for a baby to arrive. Plus pp will reimburse me anyway so I wished him well on his journey, he'll likely cross the wrong man and cease to exist one day

Go find him? NO. I know several local cops, and the first thing they'll tell you is NEVER confront someone like this on your own, tempting as it may be. You simply have no way of knowing what he'd do - and has been said before, if you encounter him when he's "hurting" (early withdrawal state) he could be motivated to do some pretty bad stuff.

As far as him crossing the wrong person and ceasing to exist, that actually happens more than you might think. Due to the unfortunate issues in my childhood, I went to four different high schools. Two people I was in different schools with later met violent ends (one horribly) due to their lifestyle choices. One scammed a drug dealer and the other stole from their homeless friends, and was beaten to death. This guy will, sadly, get his comeuppance; it's just a matter of time.

And I'm up for a $20. for the OP to help with replacement of the knife.

I would talk to local law enforcement and make a report for fraud or theft... Let them decide on the report they want to take in accordance to their local law and regulations. Then you give the deputy or officer all the info you have of him and then your agency will notify his local agency advising them of the crime. What they decide to do from there is on that investigator but at least you can take this to the next level... Who knows, maybe you can get your blade back if he still has it.

It's worth your time.

And the mods and community here are awesome. They do the best to keep the scum out... unfortunately some of the scum is real good at being scum and it takes a little while to come out. But I love this community, I don't post much but I am always here.

I don't mind kicking in a few buck to replace your blade too. I couldn't imagine losing any of my knives especially my Emerson's.

Cheers,
