Steel test results

An unfortunate mixup, but handled extremely well.

Thanks for posting that Dan.

Yes, thanks for posting. That sounds like a good honest answer. Only part I disagree with is the specs for L-6. L-6 is supposed to have .30 % Mo.

Anyway, I'm not going to return my "L6" or even stop buying it. It welds really nice and has good contrast, and it's nice not to have to forge it flat before putting it in a billet. :)

Nice. Good to see that and makes sense about the 1095 for sure! Im sticking some in the oven now....

Yep, sounds like the Terry Summers I've dealt with in the past. I've never had any trouble with Admiral and the 1080 and 1095 have been fine. I did not like the L6 though and now I see why. Not enough nickel. Thanks guys

I did want to add that Admiral's L6 / 8670M ain't all bad, I did pass my JS perforance test with a blade I forged out of it, bent 90 deg.s and sprung back almost straight after all the cutting :D

Thanks for the clarification. It does show the need by all to be specific .Saw blade steel may be L-6 or 8670M or something else ,don't assume !

as is Band saw steels with widths over 6" mostly is 15N20 .

I'm glad that's over with..I hope..normally there is a good answer to everything
if we look for it hard enough..none of us do things that will hurt our business on propose
and talking about it sensibly helps.. at least that's the good side of these forums

I hate to get in the middle of things (not;) )
but ,, you know me :)
thanks guys...

In a way, I hope that they will continue to get this steel, just make sure that it is properly named, I have used some in the past, it makes great throwers. If they get a good supply of L6, there may be times where a maker may choose the 8670M over L6, for example price, or that it will soften enough with normalizing to grind easily (where L6 can be a bear to anneal without an oven). I would like to see the heat treat information to go along with this steel, and mabey a TTT.

And thanks to Terry for responding, and thanks for posting his respionse when he couldn't get through.

I don't think Terry will get anymore of this steel so if you want some, get it now..I don't think he has much of it now..but you'll have to ask him about it to make sure..and on the other...

I'm glad to help in anyway I can...:)

I don't want them to quit selling it either, just re-label it.
Maybe we should put it to a vote...
