Stop with the half stops

There’s a reason why wheels are round and not square. Half stops? Wth were they thinking? I’ve seen several people that got bit bad with half stops when they were opening the blade. I’ve got bit a few times but not bad. I don’t recall ever seeing that happen with a cam or rounded tang folder. As for closing a blade with half stops isn’t as bad, it’s that dang herky jerky opening especially a bear trap like the gec 23. Imo half stops should be banned !

Just how would you get cut opening a knife with a half stop, let alone closing?

I've cut myself pretty severely a few times with my Head Knife while cutting out saddle parts.
I didn't blame the knife and that awkward round blade, I blamed myself for not keeping it sharp enough, not paying attention, and having my dumb hands in the way.

Can’t agree more, one hand or two handed, left or right hand, never have cut myself with either half stops or cam tangs or friction folders while opening or closing.

The only time I’ve cut myself had nothing to do with any opening or closing mechanisms.

Bent my nails back a few time with heavy pulls though…and I’ll take cutting my finger over a ripped off/bent over nails any day 😂

I personally like half stops. Whenever I get a new knife, whether it be half stop or nor, or whatever different machination may be to it, I open and close that knife many times to familiarize myself to the action and feel of that particular tool. I like to get to the point where I can open and close that knife with my eyes closed and feel perfectly safe using it. I don't think there is anything wrong with half stop or cam tang knives, they both can perform predictably and safely if one is familiar with their peculiarities.

I just remembered that one of my knives with a half stop is a lockback and I like that about it because it just gives a satisfying feel to the opening of the knife.

You should see the ones where we try to decide which hand to use to open the blade... covers both "right" and wrong opinions. 🤣
What about deciding the design, then cover colours, then the purchasing of a Bladeforum knife, but we won't go there. 🤯🤯🤯🤣🤣🤣;)

I appreciate the effort needed to get a halfstop executed, with the spring flat with the liners. It shows a bit of extra work.
The Swiss Army Knives do not have them and they are still popular. (there is one in the flat screwdriver/bottle opener)
It is funny that, as pointed previously, if you get used to knives with halfstops and then get one without you need some adjustment time and vice versa.

Before some "wise-acre" comes in and says; "ha ha ha ha, if more people would carry a "fixed blade" they wouldn't have to worry about cutting themselves because of half stops", I'd ask; how many times have you stabbed yourself putting your fixed blade back in it's sheath?
Or, how often people have lost a fixed blade because of poorly made sheathes, lot of them knocking about.

I prefer a knife not to have an HS, just smoother in action, but if has it it has to be endured-carefully. It's a bit like gearboxes some are smooth and fast, other clunky and annoying. Ah yeah, Americans forgot about manual cars decades ago...😉
