Store Owners & Sellers Beware

WU transfers are one of the safests way to receive money (it's WAY expensive for the sender though), you go to a WU place, give them a number, your name and the ammount you're supossed to receive, they check it and give you the cash in hand.

Anyone can send that anywhere on the planet and in 5 mins you can go pick it up.

Yes, exactly. That's the angle I'm going to take on this one. Our current plans are to head to small claims court (assuming this particular division of Citibank does business in Utah thus providing long arm juristiction). I can file a claim up to $5,000 and my hope is simply that Citibank won't bother to send a defense representative, allowing me to win by default (works for speeding tickets). We shall see.

No, it doesn't work that way. You will probably have to file in the state where Citibank is incorporated. If, for some reason, you can do it in Utah, the bank will blow off the summons unless you have it served personally. I sued Wells Fargo Bank over a bounced money order and they just blew it off. I could have hired a process server but I lost patience with the system and ate the bounced money order. To this day I won't accept a Wells Fargo money order. Been there, done that.

Well, I'm not going to lie- I know this situtation won't be resolved to my advantage, but I feel like I have to try something. Live an learn I guess. Anyway, y'all be careful!

Hello!
Dusty's wife Carla posting. Unfortunately, we did not read the postings earlier, and just shipped Vlad a $950 knife last Wednesday! Dang! He used a different address than I saw posted earlier. We have called Visa, and of course got the run around that they could not help us... even in asking them to flag the card in advance of the charge back if it occurs! I see where you talk about address verification, BUT when I do an international card authorization, they do not ask me for the address of the card holder!
We should have gotten concerned when his first card was rejected, but he said he had overspent and sent us another card number. The second one went through.
Now for the second part of our complaint!!! :( We have insurance for theft! BUT, after calling them, we found out that they are not much help either! SHEESH! I understood that we were covered for theft, but after calling the company, I was informed that we were only covered for $250! And only because he emailed us his card number info! If we had taken the information over the phone (which we did try to do---line was busy), we would have not been covered at all!!!! So, now that starts a whole new thing! Finding a company that will cover us for things like that! RUDE AWAKENING! We thought we were covered, but found out that any sale conducted over the phone with the customer giving us all the correct information, and later cancels the charge in a fraudulent manner... we are not covered at all by our insurance! I was in shock, as that includes a good majority of our sales.... we are better off accepting a check!... or take a chance on a money order. What we ended up with is that the only time we are fully covered, is when someone breaks in to our house and steals a knife, steals one off the table, or it is lost if we ship via FedEx and someone signs for it! (UPS is only covered at a lesser rate!) Even when we are carrying the knives to a show ourselves, our coverage is lessened!
We are insured through Collectibles Insurance Agency. Now, this is our coverage... if any one out there and use this company, please check your coverage... yours may be different. We went without for a long time without insurance coverage, and was tickled to find this company. If anyone has a better company, PLEASE let us know, and we check them out and see if we need to change companies!
After talking this over with Dusty, we get concerned that now there is really no safe way to have a knife paid for.... now we will have to not trust anyone (which we hate to do) and wait for a check or money order to clear, and for international orders, I guess going Western Union or MoneyGram are our only viable options!
Any other suggestions, would be greatly appreciated!

How about posting his address in the "Hamas" forum?

That's exactly what I was thinking. Or rat out his address to the israelis as a "terrorist hideout". Helicopters take care of the rest.

We take international credit cards and haven't had a problem, YET but I do send everything with delivery confirmation, even if it goes US Postal Service because I have had chargebacks where the customer said they didn't get the order but I fax a copy of the invoice, the delivery confirmation receipt and a print out from USPS.com with the actual delivery information and I've always won. And I haven't always shipped to the billing address so I gues we've just been lucky but just reading this has made us pause and maybe rethink our policy. Just because we haven't been screwed yet doesn't mean it won't happen.

Carla, there is a safe way to get paid for your knives. Bank wire transfers. The money is wired to your bank account, and once it is in your account there is no chance of a chargeback. International wire transfers are fairly expensive, but if a maker asks to be paid this way, I have no problem with it.

Keith~
Up to this point, we have never had a problem... just now finding out that possiblity. The customer in question has not attempted chargeback the item purchased, but after reading the forums, we are definitely concerned that it may occur. From here on out, we will definitely use a different approach as to international purchases! We will go either with wire transfer or as someone suggested, Western Union or one similar.
Thanks to all for their replies!

One lousy thing is that credit card chargebacks can be done up until 180 days. You think you are safe and then all of a sudden you get the notification from the card issuing company. That's when you start getting that sinking feeling, because a chargeback is almost always granted to the card holder.

Man this sucks, I know how many knife sales $5000 represents. Its odd that a charge back is so easy. I am unable to do it with my Visa card issued here.

We had the same scenario here with one huge order that was not the average anount of knives for one person. 12 to be exact, writing back to him I was asking what blade finishes he wanted and he would tell me to go back to making his knives. Bye, bye. I just suggested he find another maker.:thumbdn:

Keith is right on about the bank transfer. However, I would HIGHLY recommend as a transfer requires the authorized use of a router number and account number that you have a standing order with the bank that the account is for payment inbound only and that all funds received are to go directly into another deposit account (no Nigerian scams this way)

Hi, Jay Fisher here. Attached is Vlad's latest email and my response.Notice he has several email addresses.
Thanks to you all for keeping us aware of these scammers!
Jay

Hello "Vlad." Your email scams and internet fraud are legendary. I know of no knifemaker who hasn't heard of your thieving ways. Your name is all over the internet, in every chat room and scam site.

May God almighty grant you with the justice you deserve. As for me, I'll forward this email address to the Israel authorities so they can trace it to your hole in the ground.

Sincerely,
Jay

Vlad contacted me about a knife and gave me his credit card info. I ran the card and was getting ready to package his knife when a little voice told me to check him out. I refunded his money and told him to do a wire transfer if he wanted the knife.

And, I'll bet you've not heard from him since.

Well, because of the ripoff status of Vlad I took my time with the refund. Maybe I was able to tie up his funds for a while and prevent someone else from being screwed.

This clown is still at it. He hit a dealer up for over 3K.

BTT accordingly.
