I standardized and life became easier.

.22 LR
.45ACP
7.62x39
7.62x51
12ga

If push came to shove, all would go in the well except the .22s.

A GOB at work hunts quite a bit. Got 10 deer this year and stopped since no one else wanted to pay for the processer. He told me all he uses is a 12 ga until the leaves drop then he switches over to his .30-06. Cover is just too thick otherwise and ranges are >50 yds. Shot 8 with the shotgun and 2 with the rifle.

I was hoping my AK could be my 30-30, but this is South Cacalacky not South Fla. Might get a few strange looks.:eek:

Will have to check it out further before next hunting season.

What is 7.62x39 going for these days? It's been a long time since I've bought any.

Edit: Okay, I just looked up 7.62x39 Barnaul at Dan's Ammo, and my jaw dropped. It's at least double what I last paid for this round.

I didn't look, but the last Barnaul I got from Dans (SP, more$$$), was right around $85/K.

Now I'll go look.

I looked........ YAAAAAAAAAAAA

Probably getting stranger and stranger with the rising prices of ammo. That must be about enough for a down payment on a house nowadays....

I don't know about that round, but the .223 (m855) .62 grain, green tip "penetrator" mil-spec ammo manufactured by Lake city, radway green(british), winchester, is climbing through the roof, IF YOU CAN FIND IT. I've been watching the prices soar from around .25 cents a round (which was expensive a year ago) to approaching .75 cents a round now. And I haven't seen much of it around. The next year will be an interesting one for sure....

Rising taxes, rising gas prices, rising cost of stamps and item shipping, all groceries are more due to the fuel increase, rising ammo prices, and with the dollar dropping in value, the next year will prove interesting.

GF's points about standardization as sound, but it isn't like anyone needs my endorsement on that one.

I learned that lesson in 1983:

Scene: two men in the forest, hunkered down behind trees, shooting at each other...

Donald: Jaaaack?
Jack: Yeah?
Donald: Time out, OK?
Jack: Time out?
Donald: Time out.
Jack: What do you mean, 'time out?'
Donald: You're not gonna believe this. I was in a hurry when I left the cabin this morning, and, well, silly me, I got the wrong bullets.

Not strange.

I thought all you guys in the US carried an old WWII .45 pistol, a new M4 and then either a Barrett .50 or an Accuracy International L115A1 .388?

If I ever get to moving over the pond my first buy will be the AI.

How come no bandolier of Busses? I would've thought that would've been top of the pile?

Oh well nice stock anyway, is that part 1 of 10 for the SHTF scenario?

You guys don't hunt, do you? It's not all about a SHTF scenario. :D

My .30-30 is a great 150-yard gun that puts a deer in the freezer every time I pull the trigger. And most of my deer hunting is in thick cover where the longest shot is about 50 yards. If I'm going to hunt over a cutover or a field, then I'll grab the .308 or the .30-06.

12 gauge game loads are for trap/skeet and the hundreds of doves that I miss every September. :p

9mm is a fine round for practicing at the range. .45 ammo too expensive? Get yourself a 9mm and sling some lead down range. Three words: Winchester white box.

12 gauge in the house with little kids? My first three loads in the magazine are #6's. They'll do plenty of damage at 10 yards, and they won't go through drywall same as buckshot or slugs.

The tungsten turkey loads? Well, what do you shoot when the gobbler is 40 to 50 yards away?

Standardization, smandardization...

Long live the .30-30!!!

No rifle hunting in IL, unless you are using black powder. .45 too expensive? Reload and/or .22 conversion. I can't begin to imagine what ammo will cost when I have enough cash to buy some more. I spent too much time buying Busse and never got around to a 308.

If that was in .308, I would find a way....and probably have ATF after my azz!

If you are looking for a .308 rifle - here are a couple of suggestions:

M1A Scout/Sage chassis.... expensive to buy, expensive magazines, expensive to maintain and feed. HAMMER.

Or... For cheaper/more plentiful magazines, and 2/3rds initial investment, the FAL... cheap to maintain, expensive to feed, HAMMER! :D

Or, just GO FOR IT - GET A PIG! :D

That's about what I remember paying. Now it's $99 for 500 rounds.

All those politicians who've tried/threatened over the years to tax ammo heavily as a gun deterrent must be gloating.

That's only strange it you purchased all that recently...

That would cost a small fortune right now.

I'm right there with you except for the lack of .45.

All of my firearms are either 12-Gauge, .30-.30., or .45.

For peep's sake, what the hell is that on top of your Marlin?

Oh here we go. :grumpy:

Leupold 1-4x20. If I take a 150 yard shot, the deer is going down.

With the new Hornaday ammo that extends the range out to 200-250, I'll be glad it's there.

Also helps a little in low light.

You need a scope for a 150 yard shot?!:eek::eek:
You need more practice!

Man couldn't hit sand if he fell off a camel!

:D;)

You know I am just messing with you.....mostly....partly....well, here and there

:D;)

You guys are all freakin' snipers. I can tell. :D

I don't need the scope, but I sure like the peace of mind it provides.

Some hunters have ethics. :p

To quote a great Hog, "Ethics, Smethics"......I find they only hold you down!
