Stretch?

please no. If anything eliminate the existing choil and build one into the handle that is right under the pivot area. And the blade shape is a very unique one. Please don't change it. Unless it was to make the spydie hole a touch smaller which would nicely reduce the hump just a little.

Please don't touch the handle. Half the reason why I love the Stretch is its ergos.

Thanx for the input. We wouldn't change the handle from the finger choil back. Only the choil would be deeper, more like the Caly. It has been suggested that we offer both blades. (current and straight spine).

Deepening the choil is a mold change so no going back.

I'm thinking of changing the Stretch pattern. Make a deper finger choil like the Caly and straighten the spine line the Endura. Thoughts?

Man, that sounds about like exactly what I've been hoping you guys would make!

I think the blade shape gives the Stretch character and personality, in addition to being very useful, so it'd be the last thing I'd change. A deeper choil would only make a great knife that much better.

That sounds good to me, Sal. I've been bugging you for an FRN Caly redux and I apologize for that (well, not really :p). An FRN Stretch with straight spine and deeper choil would be a nice compromise. I know that I would pick one up.

Would it be asking too much to slap on a wire clip?

I agree that the larger choil would be a plus but I don't see a real benefit in changing the blade shape. As a matter of fact the only change I would make to the blade, besides maybe a thicker stock, would be to add some jimping on the top.

I love my Stretch, but at the moment I am using it less often since the piece that hold the lock bar in position broke, and I have yet to send it to Spyderco.

I'm all for improving/updating a design. But I will say that if the CF/ZDP Stretch would have been my first Spydie, it would have been my only one. IMO, it is the perfect balance of good looks, size and ergonomics.

I would like that... in all honesty the choil is so mild I never end up using it. Making the choil deeper would be a great idea.

Please add jimping into the frn on the spine like the Delica too! :)

Also, since you are reading. Make a clipped manbug/ladybug!

I agree with that last part! I know it may be difficult and unwieldy, but then again it may be great. A clipped ladybug (maybe fully serrated) could be a true every day carry backup for me I think.

*edited* to clarify a couple things

It wouldn't be difficult at all if they got rid of the lanyard hole. I made my own using a dragonfly 2 clip and screw. I dremeled out the grooves so the clip could be set in the FRN handles. Im im not the professional but all it seems like all they would have to do is change the molds a little bit different for the frn to accept the clip and use a better screw that can be counter-sunk better. I made a thread about it on the Spyderco forums and Sal said they actually have some as prototypes that work well in shirt pockets. I still really want one... I hope some day.

Sorry to derail the thread a bit... dont respond to much. :)

I used the dragonfly clip but if they could counter sink the hardware a bit more with ones designed for it, thats all they would need to produce... that and the molds for the frn to accept the wireclip.

I did it myself...

Could you do that to a hawkbill h1 ladybug? If so, you should pm me details.

I never use the choil on my Stretch, but might begin using it if it were deeper. Choils are here to stay but I'd rather have more edge. The very structured handle feels so comfy and secure that I never crave to use the finger choil.

I think offering one or more additional blade shapes would increase the potential market. Perhaps that should be done first, since it would be less costly to implement. As for the choil, a deeper one probably wouldn't hurt, although I've never had a finger slip forward onto the blade while using a Stretch. I just don't see the Caly 3.5's choil as being significantly deeper or better than the Stretch's, so I'm not sure how many would even notice the change. If it was possible to give the Stretch a choil like the Native, Sage, Chaparral, or UKPK, that would be a different story.

Couple mockups of potential blade shapes:

What about larger pivot screws and a stronger pivot?
Have you ever broken a Stretch pivot? Have you ever heard of anyone breaking one unintentionally?

I vote #2 and yes to the native sized choil.

I like #1 but really, I like them all. #3, I'd like more if it's slighly wider.

Also have to consider how they are in the closed position with the Stretch's handle pattern.

Honestly I don't ever use the choil since the ergos on the handle are so good. The Stretch is my favorite model you make and I view the choil as more aesthetic than functional, i.e. keeping the lines smooth when opened/closed compared to other models like the Endura and Delica. With that said, I do really like/use the choil on the Caly 3, although comparing the Stretch to the Caly 3.5 is more of a fair comparison. Sounds like a Stretch-Caly hybrid which I'm sure would be fantastic!
