Stretch?

I don't get why the stretch cost more then the delica and endura , all 3 have the same blade steel and handle material yet it's like 20 bucks more

SHady A.M. - You just saved me about a $100 by talking me into an FRN zdp Stretch instead of hunting down a CF version to compliment my VG10 Stretch..........thanks!? haha

Call me crazy, but I'm one of those guys who likes a choil for function and aesthetics. When the Stretch II was initially offered in VG10 I jumped on it because it offered everything I wanted to see in the Endura. After a year of using the VG10 I started hunting down the CF version... Once I it had it, I liked it but I didn't love it. I just kept going back to the VG10 model.

Fast forward 4 years and about 60 different knives from all kinds of high end manufacturers (SKI, Hogue, CRK, customs...) and I'm back to carrying a Stretch II, except this time it's a BRG version.

It is probably because Spyderco sells a TON more of Enduras and Delicas compared to the Stretch helping keep their cost down. Also, I imagine that they want to keep them at that target price point for competitive reasons. The Stretch's blade is ground much thinner which adds to labor time.

...I do not see it for 20 bucks more. Endura VG10 is around $65 and the Stretch VG10 can be had for $75 or less. The ZDP versions of the two also only has about a ten dollar difference.

Exactly. If I buy 1000 rounds of ammo, it's going to cost me less, per round, than if I buy 50 rounds. The same holds true for most things, larger purchases get volume discounts. I'm sure the shop that makes all three models charges Spyderco less, per unit, for the Endura and Delica, two of Spyderco's perennial best sellers and thus "high volume" items, than for the Stretch, which has yet to achieve that level of sales.

I cannot find a Stretch for less than $78, and most Endura's I find are around $62. Also, the Stretch is not thinner. The Delica and Endura are thinner and more of slicers than the Stretch. My signature quote from Sal is from a thread talking about which models were the best slicers iirc. I bet the number of knives sold is the main factor. I also don't know if they are made at the same factory in Japan. If not, that could explain some of it also. The Stretch, whether you compare it to the Delica/Endura or not is imo worth the $80 I paid for mine.

I own Delicas, Enduras, and Stretches and the Stretch is ground much thinner than either at least mine are. This is a big reason why I prefer it over those two. I recall Sal himself saying that he had the Stretch ground thinner for his own preference in his uses.

Folks want different things in a knife. For me, the $77 I paid for the stretch was a deal. It has a much bigger blade than the Delica for not much handle and the blade shape works better for most (not all) EDC tasks than the Endura (which I also love). The Stretch has a thinner grind and slices better than the other two and it has a usable choil. The blade shape has also grown on me and the FRN handle hits in my hand like it was custom made for me. Also, for me, the Stretch deploys fast and easier then the Endura. I love the Stretch, its right up there with the PM2 as my favorite all time knife. ...just wish I could get it in CF or G10!! haha

Sal. The distinct blade shape is part of its appeal. The jumbo choil is my only complaint. It is a great knife.

Has any one heard anything about the stretch sprint run super blue? I hope it gets out before Christmas .
Thank you

I own 2 stretches, by far my favorite spydies. I would hate to see any changes at all, its perfection as is. I think it would be better to add a completely new model in between the endura and delica in size and shape as i personally find the endura a little long in hand and the delica a little short. maybe call it the metalica. :-) would be nice to see some more sprints and or handle options for the stretch though.

It is in the 2014 product guide but a few others are in there and already out so who knows. I wouldn't depend on it as a gift for anyone personally.

Thank you, it was going to be a gift to myself. :)

I'm waiting for the Blue Nishijin Glass Fiber Damascus. The black Nishijin is available.

Ugh, your not helping:D

I really want a stretch, I don't mind the frn handles I kind of like them.

But I kind of made a promise to myself that I would try to only buy sprint runs.

This slows down the spending a bit for me.

Both the Spyderco Stretch Nishijin Glass Fiber Folding Knife (3.5" Damascus) C90GFPD and the Spyderco Stretch Blue Nishijin Glass Fiber Folding Knife (3.5" Damascus) C90GFBLPD are sprint runs (limited to just 600 knives).

And they are absolutely beautiful, not sure if I bought them that I could bring myself to use them.

That is why I will probably admire from a distance and spend that money on something I will use. Plus I already own a VG-10 bladed Stretch, and the Super Blue or ZDP sounds more enticing. I don't care about Damascus, it's still a VG-10 cutting edge. I did like that CF when I handled the R.

I had been debating between the super blue caly 3 and the upcoming sb stretch for a while. Finally made a move and put in a pre-order for the stretch. Really looking forward to it!
