Strider "knives"? - no way!

Thanks RJ,I too have used my knives to pry.See its easy to say use the right tool when your in your shop or garage and theres a bench of tools a few feet away.It another when your on top of a ladder, mountain, out on a boat or in the field and something needs to be done NOW with what you got on you.

The knife is not a pry bar is a fine motto for office workers or people in workshops.

As to 'hero worship', that's just so much bunk. Mick and the Strider guys are very down to earth folks, with an agenda...that agenda being to provide the best possible working tool to those that need it most..those people that are defending your right to post your comments in places like this.

Hey Melvin-Purvis, i certainly perceive an element of hero worship surrounding the strider guys, but i would never argue that it is their fault they are who they are. Any hero worship (much of it justified) would be a result of our actions and views.

But look how this thread has progressed, there has been little rational discussion since strider is a Taboo subject.

Cord Wrap:

Pro's- User replacable (only handle i can think of), uses a highly tactile method of grip which allows many different hand types and different grips.

Cons- It can catch on fire, and it can suffer from abrasion (source Mick Strider).

The Edge geometry question is different, since strider offers nearly full flat grinds and the more obtuse saber grinds on the same models!

Cost-First off strider is a small company, they use some very exact and expensive manufacturing techniques (such as Wire EDM), They use the best stainless steel in large quantities, and they do not do an in house heat treat. Strider is not stupid, the price elasticity of cutlery is such that cheaper knives sell better, so if they could make them cheaper they probably would.

Some of you guys aren't getting loot bags at my next birthday party, if you're invited at all.

Well, everything positive I would have said about Striders has already been said.

I just like them because I believe that they are simply some of the best knives on the planet, bar none.

I will probably (hopefully) never be in a situation where I have to cut myself out of a car, plane or whatever.

But I can rest easy knowing that if I have to, I can. I can do pretty much anything imaginable to and with my Strider, and it'll still be in perfect shape, begging for more.

I like the biggest, baddest, and best of everything. Blades are no exception.

I might someday get a Busse or Swamprat, because I just like knowing that if I had to, I could hack through concrete with it.

Its just the way I am.

If you don't like Strider knives or the company for whatever reason, you do not have to buy them.

But trust me...it is YOUR loss...

Of course, there are some situations where it's just not possible to have the right tool, but for most people, it's simply because they either lack the experience or have poorly planned.

I'm not even amazed anymore at the number of people who seem to take inordinate pride in having to pry with their knives, because that is all they had available, again.....

Um, are you sure?

How is it that you can melt the ends of it to keep it from fraying?

I'm pretty sure the paracord used on the handles will only melt because it is synthetic. (Polyester?)

Not only is my Strider SNG able to shave the hair off my arm but it's also able to take more abuse then I'm able to offer it. I have owned folders that cost more then my SNG and sold them. Any knife can cut, that's the easy part, but when I need a tool that I can hammer on, pry with, and toss around, I grab my Strider.

Perhaps I will be more judicious and circumspect with my remarks in the future.

Aren't some of us over-reacting a tad? As many of us have in the past, and will do so in the future?

I'd guess that Strider sells plenty of knives, and will continue to do so, and that my idiotic opinion makes extremely little to absolutely zero difference to them. Heck, they might even welcome the noise.

I will henceforth follow the maxim: "If you have nothing nice to say about somebody then say it on Bladeforums, because those guys really care."

That's it for now.

Trace, what you looking at Ken dolls for????? :D  :D :p

Strider make some great tools and even better I am proud to call them my friends. Do I own any? Yep! :)

Sheldon, damn buddy that was a great post, you scared me! :D

There is a simple solution here...If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you can't afford it, save for it or find something else.

Almost half the posts here say if you don't like it, don't buy it, and don't bash Strider.

I agree with that.

HOWEVER, everyone's opinion is welcome here, so there is no reason that he was wrong to voice his.

Just because one knife brand has more loyal fans than another doesn't mean it is absolutely wrong to say anything bad about it. If I were to say that Brand X knives suck, and Brand X was, say, Frost etc. I would not get so much flak. But say something about Strider and you stir up a big sh!tstorm.

Even if I don't like, and never buy a certain knife, there is nothing wrong with commenting the reasons why you don't buy it. Negative feedback is not only limited to cheap brands. In fact, I would expect to have more negative feedback for such an expensive knife, so they can build it better to justify the price, creating a future potential customer, not just one who never looks at the knife again and keeps quiet. No knife is perfect, and everyone has the right to say why they dislike something. After all, that is what these forums are for!!!

I like Strider Knives, but that doesn't mean I get pissed when someone else doesn't.

Nice post marty123.

Meet me at the Blade show Strider table and share some more of your expert opinions about the rest of the Strider line of knives. We will all take notes. Leave the keyboard at home you won't need it.;)

Way to go Trace:D

This is a sharpened prybar:

Bura_AK-3

It's 18"OAL, 12" 5160 differentially tempered blade, 1/2" THICK, 2.5" tall at the widest point. It cuts too.

Strider makes knives.

I remember this conversation when it was about Busse. The only thing that stands out with this thread is Trace Rinaldi. When someone said basically the same thing about Busse knives, Trace joined right in agreeing with that person, now that it has turned to Strider, Trace disagrees  . I can smell the hypocrisy through my computer :barf: .

Dr Jones asked:

"Um, are you sure?

I have never tried to specifically burn the actual cord wrap handle on a Strider, but I can tell you with certainty that real 550 paracord burns quite nicely. Yes, it also melts. Then it catches fire, if you keep holding a flame to it. It just takes a few second more exposure to the flame. I've even used paracord as fuel to get a fire going.

I received an SnG not too long ago. I noticed that there was some minor vertical blade play. I e-mailed Mick about it and his reply was, "Send it, I will turn it around quickly for you". You have to remember, this is in a time of War when Military orders are a priority. Mick gets back to me and says that the stop pins that he has in stock are smaller than what he needs for my SnG, but he has upgraded mine to what he has on hand. He tells me that the larger stop pins will be arriving at his shop in approximately 3 weeks, and that he will send back my knife because he wants me to be able to use it. I end up telling him to just hold onto it until he is able to replace the stop pin. Mick then tells me that he is going to send me his personal SnG out of his pocket for me to use until my knife is ready. I am blown away by this and accept his offer. It is acts of kindness like this, (not to mention a great product and unbeatable warranty), that creates us Loyal Fans and Lifetime Customers.
