Strider SMF for hard use tasks

I do not think there would be any rationale behind buying a Strider knife. So why to waste time looking for it? :)
It is an emotional choice.

I heard stories from a friend about opening ammo cans, soup cans, clearing jammed rifles and mags. Pretty impressive for an SNG. No pics though, maybe other will stop by with some, picture threads are the best kind.
I really don´t know anything about ammo cans. How they look, how they are opened. But i can jump in on the soup cans: You just need a 2.5 mm thick 440A blade at around HRC 57-58 to cut open a soup can. Considering soft drinks: Cola - cans are made of thin steel here but of aluminium over in the US. Is that right? I have only experience with opening steel cans. :D Aluminium can be done with a SAK.:D

Do i have to read further?

Next thread about Strider hard use and noone has done it?

Poez has said all about Striders and why someone has them.

But there is nothing real about them. Sad but true.

This thread reminds me of a guy that buys his dream car a Porsche 911 and has a group of Honda owners pick his car apart saying he paid too much....

Seriously, this is ridiculous. But I guess I should have expected it

Really it's not, it's right on the money. ;)

The same could be said for Watches, Computers, TV's and just about anything people buy. There will always be some who will say they spent too much or pick the stuff apart.

This kinda stuff aways happens with things that are expensive.

Except the Porsche has measurable performance advantages. Knives don't have horsepower, top speeds, lateral acceleration, etc. Knives cut well, pry pitifully, hammer even less effectively, and not much else. It doesn't cost a lot to do any of it, and even less for the proper tools for the jobs other than cutting. If you want to pay for convenience, then the sak and pliers-based multitools win in functionality by leaps and bounds. If you want to pay for strength, then you don't pay for a folder. If you want to pay for a marginal compromise, then there are plenty of folders out there.

It's more like bragging about a pistol in a room full of shotgun and rifle owners.

Yeah, true enough. I just meant how the thread changed so quickly from me asking for first hand experiences to the same old Strider quality and value question, and whether or not expensive knives are worth the cost or not.

you are right though, any item especially expensive ones will eventually role into this sort of debate.

They always do don't they. :D

and thank you ankerson for the videos!

No problem. :)

I guess it depends on what you consider expensive, this price point isn't too high up there.

I guess compared to the Ave it's more than that.

Taking into count that SmF's run $475 to $575 usually.

True, it's just that these, CRK's, and more are still production knives. When we start posting about 'hard use' for $15K Lakes and Appletons, then I'll start wondering what the hell we're all thinking :)

That's rich man's world there...

The talk was about getting out of a car trunk or something ridiculous like that. Most tools you don't need on your person 24/7.
Funny but my weakest folder is tougher than your strongest Strider :D
IMHO you pay for hype with Strider, not for quality. Many quality issues have been reported with Striders. I've had issues with Striders myself (bad F&F, bladeplay and dull edges out of the box). Don't have ANY Striders anymore. Would not buy one even for half the price. Sorry don't mean to be bashing just trying to express what I learned from my experiences with Strider knives.
Furthermore, I want to see you stab your strider into a monitor or a window, without seriously damaging the knife.

Were all these Striders that you had such problems with bought by you brand new from an authorized Strider dealer or from Strider directly?

Regards, Neil

Out of the 4 NIB Striders I have, they were all pretty dull out of the box. It doesn't bother me since I'm gonna end up sharpening it anyway.

Really depends on what we're bragging about in said room:D.

If the guy is bragging about how he can carry it around 24/7 concealed and talks about his quick draw, I doubt anyone in the room is going to argue:rolleyes:.

Still, I'd have to agree that for the sake of cutting, that task was covered about $395 ago.

But I don't see why a hobby needs justification so long as you can afford it. I just see a happy bonus that my hobby can also be used on the job. It might also be borderline obsessive that I also happen to be looking for a job where I can use my knife all day:D.

Boy this topic will never get old will it? :D

How is it that people find it so amazing that a $500 folder can be so tough and durable? Hell, the thing costs $500, wouldnt you expect at least that much for your dough?

When you find me a sub $100 folder that is equally as unbreakable, then I will be amazed!

The CS American Lawman?
I doubt the blade will hold up as well against a stab into a computer monitor, but I'm pretty sure the handles and lock would hold up very well:thumbup:.

The blade would hold up fine believe me, AUS-8A is very tough steel.
