Strider SNG vs CRK Sebenza vs Hinderer Xm-18

And old post of mine about a Sebbie being a "hard use knife." (click me)(pix in here also)

And some more pix :D

Take away all the internet hype, they are all great knives. I love them all..... but the Strider does not feel like a $400 knife. IMHO (Wellthe one above would run round$500-$550)

RNST: who makes that knife on top, what are its specs, how much do they cost, and where can I get one?... oh yeah, and what is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

The knife is a Lochsa. It is made by Scott Cook, who used to work for Chris Reeve. The handle is a solid piece of titanium.

Wow! Very nice set of pics So-Lo. Thank you very much. I always pictured the Xm-18 as being a lot thicker (handle) than it really is.

Excellent pics, just what this thread needed!

Thanks Esav, yes its a Cook Lochsa. Been my EDC for the past six months. It is next to impossible to buy any because Scott has stopped taking orders and many people have bought them to put in a safe. Mine was a user from the original owner and I am keeping it as a user.

+1

Both the XM-18 and SnG have a fairly beefy handle compared to the Large Sebenza. Sort of higher I suppose is the way to describe them.

Again, all are great knives and all make great users. Not one will win over another.

and they said nothing good can come out of a strider v sebenza thread... hehe... need to add the lochsa to my "must-get-someday" list... wait... oh man... never mind, this thread just contributed to my future financial ruin... thanks a lot, RNST & Esav...

I am in the same position. I was at Blade when Scott introduced the Lochsa. it was a very exciting folder, right from the start. Technically, it is superb.

But my problem is the Hinderer knives. I haven't gotten one yet, handled a few, spoke with Rick. I think knives like the XM-18 are the best overall folders available today.

Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer choice.

I am in the process of getting my name on the list for a Xm-18 :D
I am also thinking of getting a Flashpoint

I handled RNST's lochsa when I met him. It is very nice, but I usually handle other people's expensive knives quite gingerly so I didn't really get a great test of the ergonomics. I should have looked closer at the machining.

don't let this thread die yet! there's a new contender that demands consideration...

The finish of an XM-18 is really superb, a Sebenza is close while Striders vary but are usually pretty rough in comparison. The grind of an XM-18 ensures quite a bit of stability at the tip even though it's a much smaller blade than the Striders too.

I think you get much better value for your money with an XM-18 or Seb than a Strider, as I personally don't buy knives for their bulk steel content.

I've owned Sebs , and still own Striders . I like them both , my EDC is a Strider PT . All that said , if I had acess to any of the three , I would pick the Hinderer , simply stated , it would be the most desirable on the resale market .

Thank you for the pictures SoLo... I dont consider the "choil" on the xm18 to be like the choil on my strider. In regards to the choil, the choil on the xm18 is so close to the blade, im a little concerned that under hard use.... OUCH!

So I have a question for xm18ers in the forum. Is it ok to choke up and place your trigger finger on the choil during hard use?

I may have to make the plunge and add a xm18 into the rotation to experiment.

I can, but the only reasons I'm fine doing it are the size of my fingers, and the fact that the flipper acts like a subhilt. If I had larger fingers or a non-flipper... I don't think I would!

That is why love4steel offered up the 'Zaan. IMO, the best overall choice of the bunch with a high hollow swedge leading to more cutting edge than either the SnG, or the XM-18. Though I would take a XM-24 over the 'Zaan, but not an SMF...
