Strider SNG vs CRK Sebenza vs Hinderer Xm-18

One thing about Hinderers and Sebbies, they do have a slick "line" to them. Grace and simplicity are part of the art. Lots of folks want that at the price, just like a classic bolt action rifle.

The SnG offers the Picatinny look to those who prefer - battle rifles get abused, and to heck with the art, duty calls.

yeah... I saw those pics of the XM-24... it's currently at the top of my "future financial ruin due to stupid addiction" list...

As much as I'd love to own Hinderers, the prices will be excessive in Europe (mind you, we have to pay 30% extra taxes in Holland on top of the price of the knife plus p&p). Same counts for Striders and Sebenzas although they are on the more reasonable price ranges. So as an European I'll vote for the Fallkniven PXL. Just as solid as a Strider, as sharp as a Sebenza, and quite affordable in Europe for less than 350 USD.

xm-18 and then strider

Ha-ha Old thread resurrected again :)

Will add my two cents. I prefer smaller knives and my comparison would be of small sebenza, 3" hinderer, and strider pt.

1) Price. Hinderer XM 3", is $385 from the maker (same as 3.5"), and currently goes for $550 or so. Small sebenza is $330 ($55 less than large one), and Strider PT is $300 ($100 less than SNG !!!). The later two can be found on secondary market for a lot less. So at the time of this post I could buy both strider PT and a small sebenza for the same amount as 3" hinderer. Taking this into consideration I would say that XM looses a lot of points here.

2) Quality. Hinderer and sebenza will top this category. They both have excellent very consistent fit and finish. As others have said with striders sometimes it is a Hit or Miss game. It is a shame that at the price asked for the knife quality control was pretty poor. I might be wrong, but I think that Strider improved their QC a lot, but there are still cases of not so good F&F.

3) Usability. Again as many have said most of the everyday tasks can be performed with a $10 knife and to me it is difficult to judge which of these three folders cuts better and by how much.
Sebenza is a tough folder, but for various reasons I would choose strider or hinderer for heavy duty tasks, maybe even for tasks not meant to be performed with a folder (I broke a 1/4" of the tip on my Spyderco, so I do know that such situations exist).
Sebenza has Ti scale that gets more noticeable scuffs opposed to G10 on strider or hinderer. Not really a big deal.
I like the clip on XM. Tip up or down, not too high, not too low.
In 3" format I would say all of them are sheeple friendly. I also would say PT has an advantage here, because in the most common hold you put your finger in the choil and hide the knife even more.

If wouldn't care about $$ amount, my vote would go to Hinderer, but at the current price it is not an obvious choice. Of the other two, I feel it is more about the personal preference than about anything else. I really like my small sebenza, but I prefer my strider PT.

Does this OLD thread need a few more pix?

Why choose???

ha. it was only resurrected for a couple posts. interesting topic tho.

I own a Strider SMF and have played with the XM-18 and Umnuumzan. Of the 3 the Umnumzaan was the best EDC knife. A folding knife IMO is carried for everyday cutting tasks and the Umnuumzan does this perfectly. The strider and XM-18 will stop bullets but feel a bit more awkward when being used for daily cutting tasks as well as being a bit bigger than the comfort levels of some people. I have the SMF for the novelty I guess but carry my Spyderco Military on a daily basis because it's a great cutter and carries well.

I believe Skinnydale said it the best when he said an EDC should be easily replaceable and something you don't mind getting dinged up. If I break or use up a military ( I have using it to cut out the bottom of a car) I drop $120 and get another. Custom folders aren't 3x tougher or hold their edges 3x better to warrant the 3x prices....they're just fun to have. Get a fixed blade if you need a hard user.

I have had or handled all three. I must say the Umnumzaan is a win in terms of strength, usefulness, and cutting ability. On those rare days however, my small Sebenza still gets carried.

Get one of the two with a straight handle for all around use. I prefer the sebbie. The straight handle offer's great control and power on away from self and downward cuts.

The steep drop in the XM18 handle isn't good at all when cutting away from yourself, or a downward cut. The two most used cuts.
It is a very well made knife, and is great for a push/stab type cut since the handle is coming down into palm for a great purchase.

I do find meatcutters a bit to picky about knife handle designs though:o

This is a very good thread, glad I stumbled upon it. I seem to be leaning toward the Sebenza again after wanting an SnG for a few days. I'll look at some pictures of the XM-18 too, though I guess it's extremely hard to find. I wish I could handle these knives before I pick one.

I have owned these.... Strider SNG and pt. Xm-18 large and small.
I still have my Sebenza Large and small.

They are easiest to clean, and take apart. I just used my large to gut a whitetail deer the past weekend. Ran it under some water, a little paper towel = cleaned in 3 minutes.

Best cutting blade grind of the three too. The SNG and XM-18 require too much effort to get through cardboard because of their thick blade grinds.

The xm-18's had Sebenza quality. And beautiful looks and ergonomics, just too thick of a blade for efficient cutting.

While I loved the Ergonomics of the Sng and PT. I always felt they were WAY overpriced. And I still do. If half of the quality problems came from a Spyderco or Benchmade knife, everyone would be up in arms about it. Yet somehow a Strider which costs way more for the same types of materials it's ok to have bladeplay and loose lock ups. Weird!

Ive owned a bunch of sebenzas, sngs , umnumzaans, but if i could get one id pick an xm-18 all the way; and this is coming from a guy with a name of od-sng.

I too would pick the xm-18, ive had a few sebenzas and striders, but would love to get an xm-18. Ive seen a few latley on the auction site but missed them, I think they were all going for 650.00 plus for a 3 inch flipper.

Ive got all 3, the xm-18 and the SnG in my safe, the Sebenza in my pocket. I like them all though but I keep coming back to the Sebenza

You've just missed new 3" flipper on the auction site for $550 and another 3" non flipper on exchange for $420. They do show up regularly, just be patient and you will get your dream knife :)
