Strongest knife steel out of...?

Please do not try to abuse a folder. It should he fine but could very easily end with a detached finger.

What you need is something like a Becker BK2 for prying if you absolutely must, but just seriously don't.

i threw the same problem over at the spydey forum. they suggested a fixed blade neck knife like the becker 14(?) or the swick. i'm looking at two scandi ground neck knives on the bay, neither one cost more than 100. steel is the sandvik type (can't recall.)

Look at millerbrosblades.com they use 5160 at 5/16" so wont snap and has a very wide edge so not the best slicer like you asked but can and does get best through metal and have 600lbs put laterally on the handle. They are fixed blades but guy, thats what you need get over it or find a different tool because you are waisting money and first aid supplies. They have a few that are not to long. As for the esee izula i have one and try to abuse it every chance i get fits in my pocket and wont break easy and i have been trying because i want a new one for free but wont be happy unless it breaks naturally. There you go. If you must get a folder because you have a fetish for hurting yourself or for pushing things past their intended purpose i would look at the benchmade tanks people are suggesting. But honestly you will break them doing prying crap so go cheap break it start over post pics of all the fails.

OP never mentioned folders in his posts. He did mention the BK2, but wanted something that had a chance of fitting in a pocket. He wants a knife that can also be used to pry with. I'll reiterate, Boker PRY mate. He will have to come up with more than $100 , but he probably won't break it, unless he uses a breaker bar on the handle. By its self, there probably isn't enough length to get the leverage to overcome the thickness. But then again, anything can be broken if you try hard enough.

I always have this CRKT Tabor pry tool thinger (not my pictures) in my pocket as well as a generic mini bar in carbon steel in my bag. Saves my knife blades.:D

So you want to have a knife that can do everything else but cut? Why not get a pocket prybar? I keep a gerber shard on my keychain for that reason.
Of the ones you listed D2 is probably the stornger of the steels, but you would be better served finding a knife that is designed for those tasks in mind. The HEST fixed blade might be what you are looking for.

I abuse my knives. I use them as hammers, pry bars, whatever I need to accomplish...I already have knives for cutting purposes, so edge retention isn't really important to me.
I'm confused. If you already have knives for cutting purposes and want to carry a tool to use as a hammer or pry bar, why not just carry a small thick pry bar or a hatchet?

The OP is MIA because everyone has poo-poo'd his idea of using a knife as it was not intended to be used... :foot::rolleyes:;):D

If I'm you I'd get a motorcycle tyre lever and pry and hammer to your hearts content!

Well, I certainly wasn't trying to run anyone off. I really am just wondering why someone would want to do that. Part of my curiousity is in the fact that I enjoy working with tools--not just knives--so if I had a legit excuse to carry a few tools around, I'd be all for it.

CPM 3 V or D two would be the tougher steels. But if you're going to pound on your knife you need a lock that can take that. I would recommend the Cold Steel recon 1 or something with the triad. Any other lock will develop play if you're hammering on your knife

I'd go for a zt 0350 don't really know about the steel being good for stress but it's got a thick tip and thick blade stock. It could be found for around $100. My other choice would be something from cold steel, code 4 tanto would be a good choice but aus 8 is nothing special

VG-10 popular for its hollow ground blade. It have two blades edges Spyder or Plain Edge configuration.
Its edges are sharp and fast to use . I suggest to go for this!

My friend likes to see how long it takes to break a knife while using it while camping. I got him a Meyerco Greg Lightfoot Catch Dog for $20 and it is perfect for abuse. Buy 5 of them and go beat the snot out of it, then throw it away when done and get #2 out and beat the snot out of it, then throw it away……………………

Why get expensive steel just to abuse it. Buy cheap and buy many if you intend to use something it is not designed to do. Like using a formula 1 race car to tow a dump truck around town.

Cheers!!
