I prefer a thumbstud. I have large thumbs and sometimes the holes are hard for me to get to.

Personally I voted for the thumb disc... I think it looks the best (takes nothing away from the blade) and functions just as good as any of the others..

The studs sometimes get stuck on my pants when placing the knife in my pocket or drawing it out..

The hole sometimes causes the knife in the closed position to stick out of the handle more than I would like (only in some cases)..

The flipper is great but sometimes it does not leave an option for slow deployment in places where I dont want to freak people out..

I prefer the hole only because I often wear gloves for my job and the spydie hole offers easy deployment for gloved hands.

On a purely asthetic basis I rank a nail nick at the top. On functional basis a flipper offers an ergonomic and quick deployment method. It all depends on the particular knife and its intended role.

I chose a thumb disc for all of the reasons above, as well as the fact that for me, the disc offers more control and is easier to use.

Like the flipper. The hole is a very close second. The studs usually seem to be at the wrong place for good rotation for me. I have not found that with the first two.

To echo most others... I voted flipper, but I like the Spyderhole, too. I wish more knives had both.

It would be interestin' to the break down by age, I voted for thumb stud because most of my one hand openers are thumb studs, (but only by a slight margin) followed closely by Spyderco hole. I probably shoulda voted nail nick 'cause that's really what I have the most of. :)

Multi choice poll woulda been nice. :)

I don't have an Emerson at the moment, but the disc/wave is enough to put a new one at number three on my to-do list. I've been drooling over the ti framleocks lately and the sebenza would look funny with a disc. And I still don't have a spyderco and everyone seems to love 'em so that's number two. (manix 2?). But after three Emerson's, I have to say; thin liners aside, they are my favorite production folder that I have bought (so far). Gonna have to get one that doesn't scream "tactical" though as I've somewhat outgrown that phase. Prolly a 10 with stonewashed finish.

I prefer thumb studs even though I have more Spydercos than anything else. Still like the Spydie Hole but a properly executed thumb stud is tough to beat. I think its because I always seem to twist a knife with a hole in my hand when opening so its sort of at 90 degrees to my palm. Might just be some sort of weird habit I picked up along the way but I always have to twist a Spyderco a little after opening. I dont seem to do that with thumb stud knives. They rest against my palm when opening so I just have to close my fingers and the knife is in position to use. Not really an issue but it makes thumb stud opening feel slightly more natural to me.

Dont really care for flippers on edc blades. Fun to play with but annoying to use.

I have become addicted to flippers, they make it so easy to open and walker or frame lock they keep the blade from closing on your finger.

A few years back I loved the flipper / AO. Now I don't own any AO knives and would have to say I prefer a hole. Second would be flipping my bali open. Love carrying my 32 morpho
