I like the spyderhole best, by far. I find it's far and away the opening method that's consistently easiest to use whether the knife is wet, oily, whether you're wearing work gloves or thick winter gloves, whatever. Plus, it has the added bonus of not interfering with sharpening at all (there's no risk of accidentally grinding the thumbstuds against your stones, for example) and not snagging on anything that you may be cutting. Aesthetically speaking, I probably prefer the looks of other opening aids, but I think the opening hole is easily the most practical I've used yet.

For me it's a tie between a Thumb Stud and a Spyder Hole.

Both work equally well for me.

Flipper: Holes, Studs, etc. can load up with dirt, etc. out in the field. Studs and Discs can get in the way and hung up on things.

Flipper... My 0560 opens easier and smoother than any folder I've ever held, spydie included.

I love thumb studs but the probably is that there are so many different and uncomfortable studs that just make knives hard to flick open and even hurt my thumb that for me the best is the thumb disc because no one can screw that one up. Theres never a disk that I cant open, and its ambidextrous. 2nd would be the Spyderhole of Deployment hole. Just because of the same reason, but a Spyderhole can sometimes be to sharp and some knives dont look good with them, some knives would actually look horrible with them.

So my vote is 1. Thumb disk 2. Spyderhole. 3 Thumbstud. But it depends on the thumbstud I would much prefer a knife with studs then a disk depending on the type of studs. But for overall I like the Disk.

I could live with any of the choices if I had to.
I voted for the Thumb Stud, because I seem to prefer that the most.

I absolutely HATE flippers.

Nail nick works just fine. I tend to open/close any knife with two hands anyway, even those with studs/discs/holes.

it's thumbstuds, hole, then flipper for me. all my flippers, skyline included, I tend to use the thumbstud.

Spydie hole followed by a flipper. Some thumb studs are OK, but I'm not a fan of disks. And I HATE nail nicks. I've been a life-long nail biter and never have any!

Flipper. My hands are weak and have trouble with other designs sometimes.

My vote goes to thumb studs - seems to be the most versatile. Can be operated one-handed, can be used for fast (flick) or slow (controlled) opening, and can be kept compact.

Flippers are great, but they really only lend themselves to fast (flick, wrist wave, etc.) opening. This is fine most of the time, but if being discrete is a goal, it might be more difficult to achieve. The Spydie Hole functions well, but it does require making the blade wider to accommodate the hole, meaning an overall wider knife in your pocket. I've never been a fan of the thumb discs, but that's just my preference.

I'm going to say hole followed by disc. The wonderful simplicity of the hole is a beautiful thing; nothing to break, round finger meets round hole in blade. Genius. Ape tech at its finest. The disc works well for me, but by its very nature, it has to be attached to the blade in such a way that makes me feel like it's the weakest link.

1-Flipper-easy to clean, no extra parts, ambidextrous
2-Hole-easy to clean, no extra parts, ambidextrous
3-Disk-ambidextrous
4-Stud-sometimes ambidextrous

Assisted flipper....Hole....thumb stud.....unassisted flipper, never had an Emerson disc or wave.

For traditionals I like long pulls followed by the crescent nail nick, for no real reason besides looks.

I voted Spydie hole but a wave is a method that I really enjoy also. Wait... I also like flippers!

Geeze - too many choices.;)

I am probably the minority here, but I like studs, holes, and discs. But I don't care for flippers. I just don't like them. In my opinion I have to position and move my hand in an unnatural way to open them. Thankfully different manufacturers produce different styles and we can all choose what we want.

I personally love Spyderco knives so I have to say the spydie hole is my favorite but the flipper is a close second.
