It's always nice when the qualities of a knife are self-evident. Why do some knifemakers use the surface of the blade like a billboard? A few thoughts...

1. Etching the word "stiletto" on the blade doesn't make it a stiletto, it makes it look like a toy.

2. Etching the word "quality" on the blade is like walking around telling people, "I'm really smart."

3. Etching a blade with a picture of itself is like wearing a T-shirt with your face on it.

It's always nice when the qualities of a poster are self-evident, but some forumites use their threads like a billboard. I certainly hope it wasn't your intention to bait someone into a fight over something so silly. Why does any manufacturer of anything mark their products? Because they can and it is good advertising.

i have a t shirt with my picture, wearing a t shirt with my picture, wearing a t shirt with my picture....

vanadium: Thanks for the heads up. I can't believe I missed this. I have completely changed my views on Jerry's knives now.

I hate blade markings that cover most of the blade, but don't see anything wrong with the last two that were linked to in the original post. I certainly see nothing wrong with using an image of a knife you make as your mark.

see Dork Ops for a fine example of stupid blade markings.

Nothing wrong with two of the examples, and the top one looks like a POS.

having a logo is one thing. cluttering up the entire flat of the blade is another.

Like Stevo?!

Obviously the last one is part of the makers mark, and I understand why some of the Busse-aholics are getting all up in arms.

But I think the OP has a point with the first two. Advertising with your makers mark is one thing, but putting drawings and words all over the entire surface of the blade is another, and IMHO takes away from the look of the knife.

Also, putting 'handmade' on your knife is one thing, but 'Quality', is like the truck I see that says, 'Honest Electric' one the side. If you have to tell me your honest in the name of your company, then that makes me question how honest you actually are. Likewise, saying a knife is 'quality', makes me question whether it really is a quality knife.

black jack has a knife through playing cards, twin blades has twin blades, and I'm sure there are others. I still can't figure out what the heck opinels logo stands for. before I figured out it was a crown, I thought it was something wholly inappropriate for a logo.

the battle mistress is the flagship knife of the busse combat line, and has been since the company first started doing production runs.

I don't know who makes the other two knives, so I couldn't surmise a reason for using "stilleto" or "quality" as their logo. quality may have been the name of the knife, and the company producing the stilleto knife may have a long history of producing stiletto's, and they wish to promote that history. I have no idea.

I don't believe that all the "troll" comments are necessary, I just think this thread should have been posted in whine and cheese. the basis for the thread is not "what do you think of these logo's?", its "these logo's are dumb."

so, whine and cheese is the place to be.

vanadium, if you'd only chosen ONE different knife for your examples, everybody here calling you a troll would have been in total agreement with you. ;)
