Hey crew,

I have a decent collection of good folders that I carry on rotation, but I'm looking to add a good sturdy knife with a Wharncliffe style blade.

Any recommendations? And pics are always appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Ps. I prefer framelocks and the Axis lock system from Benchmade.

First ones that come to mind are the kiwi and yojimbo series from spyderco. Hinderer if you got $500 for one :)

Spyderco Yojimbo 2 is a good sized wharnie (3"), it's like a box cutter on steroids and uses their compression lock. Hinderer makes an XM series wharnie also, but that will run you a healthy sum...way more than it's worth, that's for sure.

Another vote for Spyderco Yojimbo 2. It's just mean.

Not the best picture...

Haha that's funny, we must have been typing our replies at the same time and said almost the same thing...great minds...

I appreciate the feedback guys, any more ideas? Even something with a slightly sweeping blade would be cool. I don't see myself carrying something like the Yojimbo... it just looks so mean haha.

I know the one im waiting for is spydercos ppt sprint. Still mean looking though. I checked wharncliffes at bladehq and google, and it mostly brought up spyderco, kershaw, benchmade, and crkts for folders. Most the benchmade ones looked like liner locks.

On the lower end of things there's the Needs Work from Kershaw and the Tuff Lite from Cold Steel.

William Woods Titan2. If this isn't sturdy...

Second the Leek as a cool little flipper....

Have you thought about an insingo as a compromise if you can't find what you want?

Not a pure wharncliffe per se, but the Benchmade Contego is pretty close. Sturdy is definitely a good way of describing it, G10, Axis lock, 4" M4 (cerakoted) blade, glass breaker. Runs right around $180 online.

Yet one more vote for Yojimbo 2 - one of my favorite EDC blades. In spite of looking "mean" as you say, it is a very useful and easy to handle blade. It uses a compression lock BTW. You didn't say your budget and just how hard-use you plan to get. I actually think that's where the Yojimbo might fall short of expectations when compared to something like a Hinderer Wharnie. Another you might consider is a Benchmade Gravitator (426 I think) - a slimmer Yojimbo on a diet...just as useful but less aggressive looking. No longer made, you can find them on aftermarket resources at pretty reasonable cost.

I'm usually not a wharnclifffe guy, but I recently got a Northwoods Forest Jack that I'm crazy about.

It's not a lockback but it has one of the stiffest backsprings I've ever encountered. I don't worry about it closing on me during normal use.

I really dig wharncliffe blades, but most of the ones I own are slipjoints. Don't suppose I could talk ya into trying a traditional in good ol' 1095 carbon steel? They don't look mean and they can get the job done...:cool:

Left to right: GEC #47 Viper in OD green canvas micarta, GEC #92 Talon in Goldenrod jigged bone, GEC #55 Hound Tooth in mexican bocote wood

But if you're dead-set on a modern locking one-hander, it doesn't get much better than a CRK Sebenza 21 Insingo (modified wharncliffe blade,) imo*:

Good luck, OP! :)

*ETA: the Zero Tolerance 0770 looks like it would be a very nice (and less expensive) alternative to a CRK Insingo... especially that carbon fiber model!

i'd consider the BM 550HG to be a sturdy knife with a wharncliffe-style (sheepsfoot, actually) blade and one of your preferred lock systems.

Please do yourself a favor and look at the Hinderer 3" or 3 1/2" Wharncliffe folders. They are top of the line and overbuilt so they can handle anything you throw at them. I have several and was never a fan of the Wharnie until I got the Hinderer version. Just check them out before you move on to something else.
